In the short story “The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas” by Ursula K. Le Guin, the theme is that in order to be truly happy, one must stand up for what’s right, even if it means leaving what they know. Society often creates traditions and ways of thinking that are not easy for everyone to follow. Here, the residents of Omelas have the choice to ignore the suffering of a child locked in a cellar, or leave the life and city they are familiar with. The people of Omelas ask themselves whether it is better a child suffer for the city’s happiness, or should the city suffer, permitting the child a chance for happiness? The irony here is Omelas seems like a great, happy town, however they treat this feeble-minded child horribly.

The protagonist in this story is the child who is locked in the cellar. It is unclear whether child is a boy or a girl. Almost 10 years old, the child looks 6, very thin, and hardly speaks. The child is naked with a ‘mass of festered sores’ on its buttocks and thighs. It is feeble-minded, whether from birth or from the fear, societal isolation or neglect, one does not know.

The horses are also characters in this story. The city of Omelas is located next to the sea. It has a harbor with boats, broad green meadows, and is surrounded by mountains. The setting begins with a beautiful summer morning. The sun is shining. The temperature is warm. There is a light breeze in the air. This story is told in a first person, objective, point of view. The residents of Omelas are a happy, festive people. They are dancing in a procession, down the city streets toward the Green Fields to watch the race.

The antagonists are the residents of Omelas. The child playing the flute at the Festival of Summer. The old woman passing out flowers. The young riders on the horses waiting for the race to start. The people who feed the child and kick it to make it stand.

Where the child is, the setting is quite different - the cellar of a building or house. The room is very small, maybe a broom closet. It is dark. Only a little bit of light comes through the cracks in the floor. There is one window, covered in cobwebs, across the room. The room has one door and it is always locked. The floor is made of damp dirt. It is dusty and foul smelling.

The story “The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas” begins with a description of the city of Omelas. It is a city with more happiness than can be imagined. The scene shifts to one of a child locked in the cellar. One reads of the isolation, neglect, abuse, and fear that this child suffers. All of the city’s residents are aware of this child. They have seen the child. They have accepted that they are helpless. They believe that the child must suffer in order for the city to remain happy and prosperous. Some of the people leave town when they see the child and realize that they cannot be truly happy knowing the child is suffering. They walk out of the city of Omelas never to go back.

I like the descriptions of the city and people. I also liked the way the author asked if you can imagine or believe. It made me feel that the author was speaking directly to me. It allowed me to think about the beliefs and traditions of society. I do not know what I would do if this was happening in my town. Would I be strong enough to walk away from everyone and everything I know? Perhaps. Overall, it was a sad and depressing story to read and remembering that children suffer like this every day where many people do not take a stand against the mistreatment.
