Psychology and anthropology are popular fields to study in the world today. Everyday, new discoveries

are found, new information is gathered, and worthwhile experiments are being performed. Both fields of study

are providing the people with answers about themselves and other people around the globe. It is hard to say if

anthropology or pyschology provides us with more of an insight into how we function in the world as human

beings. There are three main similarities between psychology and anthropology, and two main differences.

They both started as an official field at about the same time. Psychology and anthropology both study

humans, and try to provide insights about our daily lives. When studying anthropology and psychology,

questions are always posed about how we interact with other people around us. A difference between the two

is that anthropologists study humans and their different cultures, while psychologists study the human mind in

specific. Psychologists generally study people frequently in a labratory setting, while anthropologists generally

study people and ask questions in a more natural manner.

Both psychology and anthropology started a little over 100 years ago. People have been studying both

psychology and anthropology casually for thousands of years, but as for being an official area of study it has

been a little over 100 years for both. Young, European aristocratic males were the first ones to study

anthropology. They had the money to travel and began to ask people of different cultures questions about these

cultures and their daily lives. The start of scientific psychology officially was in 187, when the scientist William

Wundt developed the first psychological lab in Germany.

Anthropology provides the world with answers to the questions about how culture is apparant in our

societies, and how it is radically different in some countries. By studying culture, they can provide us with

answers about people as a society. Psychology provides us with answers about how we function as individuals,

and how our minds work, and in turn, how we function as a whole.

The main difference between the two is the specific area of study. Generally, all anthropologists focus on

culture. They ask people questions about their cultures and they study cultures of the past. This includes all

aspects of culture. Language and customs for example. Psychology studies the human mind and how individuals

react to their external and internal environments. They focus on the brain and how it works.

Another difference is how the data is collected. Anthropologists are generally always in the field in one

way or another. They will live amongst the people they wish to study, to get a first hand look at how the culture

works. Or, they visit the people frequently to ask questions and get a good idea about how things work.

Psychologists generally study people in a more formal manner, and often in a labratory environment. They do

often study people in their natural environments, but labratory study is a big part of it.

Anthropology and psychology are highly popular areas to study at this time. Psychology is almost always

the most popular major at colleges and universities. They are similar fields in many ways, and very different

in ways as well. Pyschology and anthropology will continue to fascinate people and make them ask questions

about the world around us.

To outline a proposed events policy to the members of the Economic Promotion & Development Committee.

RECOMMENDATIONS

THAT Council

(a) confirm the process for applying this events policy in determining events for bid, development and unspecified event support.

(b) note that this event policy is being restated now to provide councillors with information about the policy objectives of event support and processes for determining support for specific events.

(c) note that the Economic Development Strategy currently being prepared will address issues relating to the economic objectives of event support and the relative priority that should be given to it.

BACKGROUND

For the purpose of this policy paper, events are defined to exclude conferences, and as A lifestyle programme or activity which represents a marketing opportunity for a corporation to build its business by communicating with its defined target audience.

Events have had an ad hoc evolution within the Council. The basis of Council support for events started with the Wellington Street Car Race and the International Festival of the Arts. In 18 Council confirmed an Event Development Strategy without a governing Economic Development Strategy.

The Council is constantly being approached by people in need of event support. However, in many cases these people fail to produce a well-defined proposal to back up their case. In this situation it is impossible for Council to make an informed decision regarding the merits of supporting the event.

Objectives of Events Support

Present objectives for event funding

(a) economic benefit, measured in terms of new money being spent in the Wellington region;

(b) increased city profile, outside the Wellington region;

(c) increased quality, variety and vibrancy in the city;

(d) the events unit continually endeavours to promote a variety of events spread throughout the calendar year;

(e) city cultural development and promotion;

(f) that ongoing council support for icon events is appropriate, but that in principle other repeated events should achieve viability without council funding support over time.

EVENTS UNIT

Event Assessment Support System

The Events Unit has an event assessment support system (EASSy). This system is designed to provide support information for events in Wellington. It helps us predict the value of events based on economic and profile indicators and provide results on the basis of an extensive survey. Financial Indicator - the focus is on direct additional expenditure. That is, new money from outside the region being spent within.

Profile Indicator - This is an estimate of the amount of media coverage (both paid and unpaid) Wellington receives from the event.

The Event Assessment Support System is to be reviewed before June 16.

Co-sponsorship

All events that Wellington City Council provide financial assistance for are also supported by at least one other corporate sponsor.

Event Categories

Refer Appendix for a complete breakdown of events into the following categories.

Icon

An icon event is held on a regular basis whether that is annually or bi-annually and associates itself directly with the city. They are well established, high profile events that attract large numbers of visitors to the city consequently bringing substantial economic benefit.

Over the last ten years Council has had two icon events, the New Zealand International Festival of the Arts and the Wellington Street Car Race.

International / National

International and national events are those that Wellington city wishes to secure in order to gain maximum profile and economic benefit.

There are two types of events supported within this category. The one-offs e.g. 17 World Cup Mountain Biking which may lead to future opportunities within that arena. For example, following the success of the 17 event, Wellington will be favourably viewed to host the 18 and 1 World Cup Mountain Biking events and the 000 World Championships.

Secondly, the annual events which Wellington supports to enhance the Event-full Capital image. The New Zealand Wine & Food Festival and the Lambton Harbour Dragon Boat Festival are good examples.

Within this category it is necessary to have two clearly defined budgets; event support and bid support.

Event support funding and assistance for international and national events that are confirmed. Bid support funding to ensure Wellington attracts top international and national events.

With the addition of a separate bid fund the Council can proactively seek events suitable for Wellington. The events co-ordinator will be responsible for the co-ordination of the appropriate sporting bodies, international bodies, Wellington businesses and event directors.

Development

Events with potential commercial viability that will enhance and are in line with the vision of Absolutely Positively Wellington, the Event-full Capital.

Often developing events stem from a community level with the goal of establishing themselves as national and then international events. Dragon Boating in Wellington is an excellent example of this. In other instances they are a first time event seeking financial support to enable them to get underway, for example, the Wellington Wind Festival and LottoÂ’s Twilight Opera at the Basin. When the developing events are placed through the EASSy system they are placed through for both years one and three, as it is anticipated that year one will show very little economic benefit, but by year three the economic benefit to the city will be high.

For example the Wellington Wind festival was placed through the EASSy in this way showing an economic benefit to the city of $50,000 in 16 and $,000,000 in 000. The figures for 000 are an estimate but the event co-ordinator and event organiser annually re-evaluate the figures at the end of each event.

Funding will be allocated on a three year basis with the initial amount reducing each year at the discretion of the Leader Economic Commissioning. This programme of reducing support is consistent with the objective that most events should ultimately be self supporting or achieve private sector sponsorship.

Goodwill

Events which are predominantly free of charge and designed to bring the community together through active or passive participation. The Wellington Christmas Parade is a very successful example of a goodwill event.

Wellington City Council does not expect to gain direct financial benefit from these type of events, although some, the likes of the Team NZ Parade will bring economic benefit and high profile to the city. However, such events will support the idea of variety and vibrancy in the city.

The Summer City Programme is an example of a goodwill event that is managed and promoted by Wellington City Council. The objectives do not have an economic focus so therefore, it is not included within the scope of this paper.

Cultural

In line with the cityÂ’s vision to be the cultural capital of New Zealand, it actively supports events such as the New Zealand International Festival of the Arts and the Wellington Fringe Festival.

FUNDING

The current event funding is broken down between the following operational grants Annual Plan grants $ 785,000

00 grants $ 0,000

Discretionary $ 170,000

TOTAL $ 85,000

Committee

The Economic Development and Promotion Committee is responsible for funding decisions on all Annual Plan Event Grants and Economic Development 00 Grants.

Discretionary

Decisions in relation to events, where lead in times are short and/or funding requirements are minor, are determined by assessing proposals in terms of the EASSy and the objectives, as specified on page , and making a decision in consultation with the Economic Development and Promotion Committee Chair. The total expenditure to date, in the current year, determined through this process is $150,500 (as shown in Appendix).

CONCLUSION

The events policy provides for the assessment of council support for events in terms of the extent to which they support the objectives specified. Funding for most events is determined by the Economic Development and Promotion Committee with a small proportion being determined by officers in consultation with the Chair of the Economic Development and Promotion Committee.

The poems Venus & Adonis and Hero & Leander have many similarities. Venus & Adonis, written by William Shakespeare (15), is the story of lovesick Venus and innocent Adonis. Venus attempts to convince Adonis to have intimate relations with her. In the poem Hero & Leander, written by Christopher Marlowe (158), Leander convinces the beautiful Hero to consummate their relationship despite her arguments. Another similarity of the two works is the digressions within the poems. In V&A, the digression involves two horses that are overcome by lust and eventually run off to mate in the woods. The digression in Hero & Leander is also sexual in nature. It involves Neptune attempting to seduce Leander. The digressions in V&A and Hero & Leander have parallel references to the work as a whole. The digressions also have similar qualities that indicate the influence of Shakespeare on Marlowe. The digression in Venus & Adonis occurs during the first one third of the poem. Shakespeare chooses to have the horses mirror the behavior of Venus and Adonis. The stallion, Adonis’ horse, mimics the actions of Venus. The stallion is the aggressor in the relationship; it is he who approaches the jennet. He shows off his strength and beauty by prancing and stamping on the ground. After his displays of strength and power the stallion, “looks upon his love, and neighs unto her” (Shakespeare 41). It is clear that the horse is entreating the jennet to submit to him sexually. When Shakespeare describes the stallion he states that, “this horse excel a common one” (). This quote directly relates the horse to Venus. The reader knows that Venus is of uncommon status, she is a god and therefore is immortal. Shakespeare uses this knowledge to link the two characters. Venus is also very aggressive in her relationship with Adonis. Shakespeare humorously describes the way Venus demonstrates her strength in a way similar to the stallion. Venus takes, “over one arm the lusty courser’s rein, Under the other her tender boy” (1-). Venus is attempting to use strength to get her love, the way the stallion used his strength. Shakespeare is making a reference to how Venus’ is taking what is customarily the male role. The actions of the jennet in the digression can be compared to the actions of Adonis in the poem. The jennet, when approached by the stallion, “puts on outward strangeness, seems unkind spurns his love, and scorns the heat he feels” (10-11). Shakespeare uses similar terms to describe Adonis’ feelings towards Venus. His feelings are described in the first four lines of the play, “ Hunting he lov’d, but love he laugh’d to scorn” (4). These two lines indicate the direct connection between the stallion and Adonis in the poem. There are several themes in the digression that parallels the poem as a whole. Adonis’ resistance to Venus is increasing her passion just as the jennet resisting the stallion increases his passion. The stallion after being rejected by the jennet he “stamps and bites the poor flies in his fume/he was enrag’d” (16-17). After Venus embraces Adonis, his anger increases his beauty. “Pure shame and aw’d resistance made him fret, which bred more beauty in his angry eyes” (6-70). Shakespeare implies to the reader, through the parallelism in the digression, that Adonis will eventually relent to Venus as the jennet relents to the stallion. The digression in the poem Hero & Leander also parallels poem as a whole. The actions of Neptune in the digression can be equated to the actions of Leader, outside of the digression. Throughout the poem, Leander is entreating Hero to come to his bed. She continually resists his advances stating that she has vowed her chastity to Venus. He proceeds to “flatter, entreat, promise, protest, and swear” (Marlowe 68) in order to win her love. Similarly during the digression, Neptune fights to win the love of Leander. He follows him through the water and he, “watch’d his arms, and as they opened wide, at every stroke betwixt them would he slide, and steal a kiss, and then run out and dance…” (18-185). Neptune entreats Leader just as Leander entreats Hero. This comparison gives the reader an indication of what Marlowe may have been planning for the conclusion of the work. In the digression Neptune hurts himself out of love for Leander. It is possible that the poem would have ended in Leander hurting himself for the love of Hero. In the Hero & Leander digression, Leander’s actions compare to the actions of Hero outside of the digression. Hero attempts to hold on to her chastity, in spite of the fact that she loved Leander. Hero pleads to Venus to help her maintain this chastity in spite of Leander but “Cupid beats down her prayers with his wings; her vows above the empty air he flings” (6-70). During the digression, Leander pleads to Thetis to help him escape the seduction of Neptune. “That now should shine on Thetis’ glassy bower/O! that these tardy arms of mine were wings” (0-05). Hero attempts to reject the advances of Leander just as Leander attempts to reject the advances of Neptune. The digressions in V&A and Hero & Leander have many similar characteristics. Both digressions are sexual in nature. In V&A, the digression describes the courtship of two horses. The digression in Hero & Leander describes Neptunes desire for Leander. Both digressions also have a component of anger. In V&A, Adonis so enraged at his horse for his lusty actions that he bans “his boist’rous and unruly beast” (Shakespeare 6). Neptune, in Hero & Leander, becomes so enraged at Leander’s rejection of him that he almost kills him. “And in his heart revenging malice bare he flung at him his mace…” (Marlowe 08-0). Not only do the two digressions possess many similar characteristics, but also the reader can find many references to V&A in Marlowe’s Hero & Leander. In line 17 of Hero & Leander, Neptune “mounted up, intending to have kiss’d him.” This is a direct reference to the boar attempting to kiss Adonis in V&A. Another reference to a theme in V&A occurs fourteen lines before the digression in Hero & Leander “But love resisted once, grows more passionate.” In the digression in V&A, the stallion grows more passionate when he is rejected by the jennet, just as Venus grows more passionate when rejected by Adonis. The stallion in V&A can also be directly compared to Neptune in Hero & Leander. Both are angered at the rejection of their love. The stallion, “stamps, and bites the poor flies in his fume/ he was enrag’d” (Shakespeare 16-17). When Neptune is rejected he sends out his mace to kill Leander for his offense. Both were also assuaged by a gentle response from the object of their affection. The actions of the jennet can also be compared to the actions of Leander in the Hero & Leander digression. The jennet teases the stallion with her lusty gaze. Similarly, Leander teases Neptune by jumping into the water naked. In addition to this, both Leander and the jennet are moved to kindness by anger and pain. When the stallion becomes angered, the jennet “grew kinder and his fury was assuag’d” (18). Leander also responds with pity after Neptune’s rage. This causes the god to believe himself to be beloved by Leander (Marlowe 0). The two gods in these works can also be compared. Both Venus, in V&A, and Neptune, in the Hero & Leander digression, are lusty and passionate. Both gods are rejected and angered by the object of their affection. In addition to this, both Shakespeare and Marlowe refer to the immortal in their respective works as a murderous creature. In V&A, Venus “murders” Adonis’ rejection with a kiss (Shakespeare 54). In Hero & Leander, Neptune almost kills Leander twice, once by accident and once in anger. The similarities and the parallelism between the two works indicate Shakespeare’s influence on Marlowe’s writing, particularly the writing of his digressions. The digressions in V&A and Hero & Leander add a great deal to the story because of their comparative features. If the reader can understand the relationship between the digression and the poem as a whole, the reader can come to a better understanding of the work.. The digressions directly parallel the action in the poem. The two compared digressions have many similar characteristics, these characteristics included similarities in the digressions and references to V&A throughout Hero & Leander

The organizations behavior is based on managements philosophy, values, vision and goals. Most of the research in the study of OB (Organizational Behavior) is concerned with job satisfaction, job involvement and organizational commitment. This drives the organizational culture, which is composed of the formal organization, informal organization, and the social environment.

The culture determines the type of leadership, communication, and group dynamics that are within the organization. Workers perceive this as the quality of work life, which directs their degree of motivation. The outcome is performance, individual satisfaction, and personal growth and development.

Managers are concerned with the efficient operation and profit margin of the company more so than an employee’s job satisfaction. To managers, an employee’s job satisfaction is just an insurance that the employee will be productive and not skip work, and of course, to get the best man for the job. The management’s attitude should give employees a visual idea of how his or her job at the organization is going to be; for once, an image is set in people’s mind it is difficult to change.

Organizations are relying on managers to get the people who get the job done, and of course, make the company money. People have always been central to organizations, but their strategic importance is growing in todays knowledge-based business world like never before. An organizations success increasingly depends on the knowledge, skills, and abilities of its employees, particularly as they help establish a set of core competencies that distinguish one organization from its competitors.

Buy cheap Organizational Culture term paper

cheap term papers

When employees talents are valuable, rare, difficult to imitate and organize, an organization can achieve a sustained competitive advantage. In order to compete through people, an organization has to be able to do a good job of managing their human capital the knowledge, skills, and capabilities that add value to the organizations.

Managers must develop strategies for identifying, recruiting, and hiring the best talent available. Develop these individuals in ways that are specific to the needs of their individual firms, encourage them to generate new ideas while familiarizing them with the company strategies, invite information sharing, and rewarding collaboration and team work.

Involvement in the organization is also a determinant in an employee’s attitude. From the start, the management must be thought of as fair and consistent. The organization’s workforce must see the manager as a “better” person than they are, a person with integrity, a person who employees will not feel prideful towards when taking orders from. Some team leaders carry themselves as if they are the boss, you have to do what they say, and that is it! Therefore, even if the leader of an organization is a couch potato at home, he or she must show otherwise in front if the employees; strong leadership qualities must be clear and visible.

Jack Pachuta (How does your organizational culture stack up? Pg ) states that in a communications style culture “Mentors and Peers focus on communications. When these Players permeate the management of an organization, information flows smoothly. The culture is one that fosters personal growth and readily accepts the need for change. Job titles are not as important as the people who hold these titles.” Communication is the key to success in any business or team environment.

The Expectancy theory of Vroom (Organizational behavior pg45) argues that an employee will be motivated to exert higher levels of effort when he or she believes that their effort will lead to a good performance appraisal. I believe that the theory is true. I myself feel so good about my accomplishment with a project or any type of work that is done well. Along those lines, a manager should do well if he or she gives the employee a few acknowledgements when appropriate.

In conclusion, an employee who does not feel like they are a part of the “team” will try just to meet the minimum levels of performance, while one who feels like he or she is an integral part will try to go over that standard. Therefore, management must consider each worker as equal importance to the organization.

Management is, by definition, getting things done through people. If managers are to increase productivity, reduce costs, and improve their organizations competitive advantage, they must focus on how to properly manage personnel. Creating effective motivation and leadership, recruiting and retaining the right personnel, rewarding and treating employees fairly, establishing an environment that supports the people and benefits the organization.

The movie Friday is a comedy, but it also depicts many important social issues. The story is set in the city of Los Angelos, California, in what could be called a high class ghetto. The main theme of the movie is about a young black man who looses his job and is influenced by his best friend to smoke marijuana. The movie also shows the relationships of his family and other members of his neighborhood. With a zany cast of characters and a hilarious script this movie touches on everything from gang violence to the use of drugs, crime, guns, relationships, sex and life in the ghetto. Because of all these issues, I found this an interesting movie with a wide variety of topics to address.

Marijuana has been around for a long time. Its use is once again becoming popular. Although its not legal, many people use it socially and for medicinal purposes. The Hollywood elite smoke it. Musicians such as Dr. Dre and the Black Crows celebrate its use. Television shows like Saturday Night Live and Kids In the Hall depict it as harmless fun.

Marijuana fashion has grown into a ten million dollar industry, with the seven branch marijuana leaf showing up on caps, T-shirts, earrings and tattoos. Studies show that after a decade of declining drug use, marijuana use has increased sharply among school students and college students in the last two years (Duschbaun 8).

In the movie Friday, rap star Ice Cube plays the character Craig. Craig has never smoked marijuana. However, his best friend Smokey smokes marijuana everyday. Craig looses his job, leaving him home all day with nothing to do to occupy his time. He just hangs out in the neighborhood with his friends. Smokey tries to convince Craig to try some marijuana. At first Craig doesnt want to. Smokey is persistent. He points out to Craig that he doesnt have to work and doesnt have anything better to. Craig and Smokey eventually sit on the front porch and get stoned. Peer pressure is obviously the only reason Craig gives in. Actually he had other options, but he chose not to use them. Common sense and a simple explanation would have worked for aig just fine (How to Say No and Keep Your Friends ) Everyday we are faced with choices. It is up to us to decide whats right and wrong. Craig decides to try it and things start to happen that he really doesnt like.

Craig and Smokey get into some trouble with the neighborhood dealer, Big Worm. Smokey sells pot for him, but cant pay him the money he owes because he and Craig smoked the pot. Big Worm threatens them and sends a gang of hoods after them with guns. They just barely escape and are scared shitless. The amount of gang violence that can be contributed to the use and sale of illegal drugs has risen dramatically in the past seven years (Gates 67). Its no wonder that this is happening with th use of marijuana becoming so popular again.

Violence and crime are issues we hear about every day. We can watch any news broadcast and see the evidence of these increasingly worrisome problems. In Friday, both of these issues are very apparent. Debone, the neighborhood thief and bully is constantly harassing the people in Craigs neighborhood. He breaks into their homes, steals their possessions, beats people up to take their jewelry and other items and is just generally a pain in everyones ass. He is the most violent person in the movie Craig gets into a fight with him and pulls a gun on Debone. Craig feels confused and not sure what to do. His father convinces him to give him the gun. He insists that Craig should fight like a man with his fists. I dont think that was very good a ice. Debone was twice as big as Craig and probably 100 pounds heavier. They do fight and surprisingly Craig wins. You would think that most problems can be solved without violent acts. The reality is that sometimes, under certain circumstances, that ust doesnt work. Obviously, this was one of those times.

Sexual promiscuity was also depicted in this movie. Craigs neighbor has an affair with a preacher. His sisters friend sleeps around to get drugs. Smokey puts the moves on anything in a skirt. To so blatantly condone this kind of behavior is repulse. With the rampant spread of the Aids virus and other sexually transmitted diseases anyone with common sense would know better than to behave in this manner. Unwanted pregnancies and the abortion rate or serious issues that should also be considered.

Craig seemed to have a loving and supportive family. His dad was a real trip. His ideas about how to handle certain situations were a bit far-fetched, but he meant well. Because there was no indication of what age the kids in the movie were, its had to comment on how the parents should have advised their kids. I do know that quite a few of the kids actions were questionable, even illegal. For example, if these kids were minors they would all be considered unruly. Unruliness is an offense that only a minor can commit (Fessler 105). All the kids in the movie were disobedient, smoked pot and acted in ways their parents should have been responsible to control. Both of Craigs parents worked, which left the kids unsupervised the majority of the the. Some of the parents in the movie also set terrible examples for their kids. Smokeys mom locked him out of the house so she could have sex with her male friends. She also got high and disregarded her parental responsibility to her kids.

Although the area where Craig and his friends lived didnt look like what we might picture a ghetto to look like in our minds, it was still a ghetto. Poverty and other social issues make it what it is.......a very depressing and frustrating place to like. Because of all the negative ways of life including crime, violence, gangs, drugs and all the other things Ive referred to in this paper, I would conclude this would not be the kind of lifestyle I would choose to live. Unfortunately, many of the people that live under these conditions dont have a choice. They are most often born into these situations or faced with dealing with them because of financial struggle or lack of resources to change their ways of life. We can consider ourselves fortunat to not have to deal with these kinds of problems on a daily basis. That is not to say that ALL people in the ghetto stay there. There are some who work hard and get the education or training they need to escape this kind of lifestyle. Where theres will theres a way and depending on how strongly they want out, it can happen.

All in all this movie was pretty entertaining. I wouldnt suggest it for kids who might be influenced in a negative way by the things that happened or who are not mature enough to know the difference between right and wrong. The movie does portray at of negative issues as being acceptable. This could be harmful to young kids who are influenced by peer pressure and this kind of nonchalant attitude toward breaking the law. It is up to us to determine what is okay for our youth. Parents should determine if this would be acceptable for their kids to view.

Friday is an entertaining, yet morally questionable flick. The social issues it depicts are many. Viewing it also raised a lot of questions on how the movie industry doesnt care what they produce. They are interested solely in making money. Their job is to entertain us. They have accomplished that with this movie. It made me laugh, but because of this assignment it made me realize that comedy was not the important part of seeing this movie. Realizing how people live and relate to each other is critical in understanding our society on the whole. Recognizing this is how we can begin to make positive changes to things that are wrong and improve our lives in general.

Chronicle of a Death Foretold

Chapter 1

. Rabbits- the disemboweled guts of the rabbits symbolize the death of Santiago when his intestines are falling out. It is ironic that the dogs want to eat the dead rabbit, as those same dogs want to eat the dead body of Santiago.

Roosters- the roosters symbolize the coming of the bishop

Pigs- the knives that the Vicario twins get are used to kill the pigs. This shows how they consider Santiago Nasar a worthless pig.

Page 1- In Santiago’s dream he was going through a grove of timber tress where there was a gentle drizzle was falling, and when he awoke he felt completely spattered with bird shit. This was very significant pertaining to the theme of Chronicle of a Death Foretold. The mother who was a repudiated dream teller was not able to read the bad omen of her own son showing that it was foretold. Also on that day a thin drizzle was falling like the one in Santiago Nasar had seen in the grove.

Irony is seen on Page . Victoria Guzman disembowels the rabbits and Santiago Nasar is horrified. He tells her to treat the rabbits as if they were human beings. In reality it will be Santiago Nasar whose intestines will fall out showing us that he will be that human being.

Chapter

Epistolary refers to a letter

There were very few animal images in this chapter. He wore a short jacket and trousers made of natural calfskin. The calfskin signifies his wealth and stylish upbringing.

Ambiguity- Capable of being interpreted in more than one-way; doubtful or uncertain.

Chapter

Pigs- the knives that the Vicario twins get are used to kill the pigs. This shows how they consider Santiago Nasar a worthless pig.

Cow- Townsmen are saying that if they develop a relationship to an animal they can’t kill it. They are opposing the claim made by the narrator that slaughterers are predisposed to killing.

Hogs- The Vicario twins are the only ones who know their hogs personally and slaughter them too. This shows that Vicario twins were real killers unlike the rest of the slaughterers.

Pablo Vicario was more resolute and imaginative until adolescence. Pedro was more sentimental yet authoritarian. After Pedro served in the army Pablo depended more upon Pedro for decisions. Pedro was the leader because of his army hardness. Pedro made the decision to fulfill honor of their sister but it was Pablo who insisted on finishing the job. Though Pedro was authoritarian and bold it was his sentimental side that kept him back from wanting to kill Santiago.

A) Faustino Santos- He thought they were too drunk and did not know what they were saying. After they leave he reports the conversation to a police officer.

Clotilde Armenta- Clotilde tells her husband that the Vicario twins are looking to kill Santiago. The husband says she is being silly. Also when they come back for the second time she tries to get them drunk so they won’t do anything.

Father Amador- He is told of the plans by Clotilde but he forgets because of the Bishop’s arrival.

Prudencia Cotes- She agreed with Pablo’s decision and says she wouldn’t have married him if he hadn’t upheld the honor of his sister. She waited on him for three years in jail and got married to Pablo Vicario

Don Rogelio de la Flor- He hears the news from his wife and insists she is being silly.

Colonel Lazaro Aponte- He hears of the news from the police and takes away the knives from the Vicario twins and tells them to go home. He believes that they were bluffing.

Chapter 4

1. Dogs- the dogs tried to eat the guts of the rabbits and now without any loyalty to their owner they are trying to eat Santiago’s dead body.

Animals are seen as food- Cervantes is shown eating an excessively large meal, which accounts for her eating habits during times of mourning.

5. Marquez’s novel shows events that are casually received and in the end amount to a great catastrophe. All the casual responses of the townspeople and even his own mother are seen and in the end the death of Santiago Nasar is a great catastrophe.

10. Parody- A satirical imitation, as of a literary or musical work. Romeo and Juliet died for each other and were inseparable. Angela instead was returned the first night and they lived a separate live until they were very old.

Chapter 5

1. The roosters show pride (Santiago) and their crowing foreshadows the events to come. The dogs show the ferociousness of the Vicario twins.

. Cristo walks with Santiago and then talks to Yamil- Santiago walks to Flora’s house- Cristo looks for him at the narrators house- Santiago walks home confused- Vicario twins murder Santiago- walks into kitchen and dies

. The briefs were in the palace of Justice in Riochaca. The files were all in a mess and water surrounded the ankles when there was high tide. The narrator rummaged pages of the 500 page brief.

4. The magistrate did not believe that Santiago was guilty. He proves that the last few hours of his death prove Santiago’s innocence.

5. Santiago- When Santiago heard of the Vicario twins wanting to kill him he was not panicked but more bewildered innocence.

Meme Loiza- Thanked God that the matter had been cleared up when she saw Cristo and Santiago calmly walking on the dock.

Polo Carillo- The owner of the electric plant thought his serenity wasn’t innocence but cynicism. He felt Santiago to be arrogant.

6. Cristo Bedoya- Cristo makes two mortal mistakes in this novel. First he spends longer at his grandparents and does not go to his parents house as normal. If he had gone to his parents house he would have been warned and been able to tell Santiago. Also when Yamil told Cristo of the killing plans he regrets not stopping Santiago and going to the narrator’s house instead of Flora Miguel’s house.

7. Cristo talked to Yamil about the warnings and figured that Santiago would have gone to Margot’s house where he was invited for breakfast. If he had gone to Flora Miguel’s house he could have saved Santiago. Cristo never though that Flora Miguel was awake this early so didn’t bother.

8. Santiago goes to talk with Flora Miguel. Flora figures that the only way to gain Angela’s honor back is by making Santiago marry Angela. Flora gives up hope on Santiago and locks herself in the room. Nahir warns Santiago of the peril outside and tells Santiago that he must hide in his house or take his rifle. Santiago does not do either and walks blindly back to his house to await his murder.

. Santiago situation is ironic for everyone in the town knows of his impending death except him. Divina Flor tells Placido that Santiago is in his room when he is not. Placido bars the door on her own son.

10. Winifrida Marquex is the narrator’s aunt and lives across Santiago’s house across the river (neighbor).

TAJ MAHAL

Taj Mahal is one of the eight wonders of the world. The Taj is the most beautiful monument built by the Mughals. Which are the Muslim rulers of India. The Taj Mahal is built from white marble. To many people the Taj Mahal is a symbol of eternal love.

Shan Jahan, the prince of the royal Mughal, got married to Mumtaz Mahal in 161. She was not his first wife but among the rest she his favorite, having fourteen children. She died in 161 because while giving birth child.

When Mumtaz Mahal was about to die she asked for four promises from the emperor which was to

- for him to build her the Taj

- for him to get married again

- for him to be kind to their children

- for him to visit the tomb on her death anniversary

He kept the first two promises.

The construction of the Taj Mahal began in 161 and was completed twenty-two years about that. Twenty thousand people were employed to work on it. The material was brought in from all over India and central Asia and it took a fleet of 1000 elephants to transport it to the site. The cost of making this was 40,000,000 rupee

To make the Taj Mahal the people had to buy a lot of resources. White marble was brought from Makrana, black marble from Surat, Sandstone from Siki and semi- precious stones from Tibet, Russia and Peru. Some of these stones include opal, corneliabs, lapis, turquoise, chrysolite, sapphires and bloodstones.

The structure includes of a main gateway, an elaborate garden, a mosque (to the left), a guesthouse (to the right), and several other palatial buildings. Outside of the gate there were a number of mosques and small tombs of sandstone and marble, inside them would be other wives of Shan Jahan.

The Taj Mahal is a square building topped by five rounded marble domes. At each corner stands a slender tower, or minaret. Behind the Taj Mahal the river Jamuna runs behind it.

The style of the Taj Mahal was Indian Islamic architecture. The facades are in great surface details. On the wall there are decoration. Calligraphy, paintings and delicate had engraves.

I personally thought the technique of painting on the walls was quit fascinating. This is how they would do it a thin layer of colour pigment would be put on top of a white plaster surface. A design would be drawn onto it. They would then scrape off the colour. This was called incised painting

Hard-stone carving existed in India and some Islamic countries. Looking at the pictures of the Taj Mahal, I think to myself it must be a fabulous skill to be able to carve marble. The craftsmen must had extreme talent to be able decorate something so beautifully.

Besides architectural features and the elaborate decoration of the Taj Mahal, there are many additional features, which make the atmosphere look so pleasant and pretty. The facades are not exactly at a right angle with the plinth, but are slightly angled.

Some of the features I think that does this would be the background and the marble. The marble looks so natural and when the light reflects it must look marvelous. With the shades of the white marble changing colour.

Something fascinating that I did not notice till I was researching was that the Taj Mahal is symmetrical. I think that looked very affective. I like the way the architect used different lines and shapes. I especially liked the arch. Having all these lines gives the building some character and a mood.

Today, Sahah Jahan and his queen, Mumtaz Mahal are both entombed in the ``dream in marble. Many people say that the best time to see the Taj Mahal is in the light of the full moon, when the white walls gleam like pearls.

I. Introduction

Titan Software was created in the spring of 00 with the goal of providing effective and affordable Application Service Provider (ASP) services to small and midsize businesses (SMB). The products of Titan Software are designed to be effective to a wide range of companies in various industries by streamlining the business processes that are similar within each industry. This streamlining allows SMB’s to take advantage of ASP services that were previously only affordable to larger corporations. Our business report consists of four main areas Strategy, Technical Specifications and Requirements, Website Design, and Company Organization. At the end of the report is also a compilation of all supplemental material for the business.

II. Strategy

Target Market

Titan Software’s target market is the largely untapped SMB segment that has been ignored in favor of the more lucrative Fortune 1000 companies. The SMB market includes 10 million companies, accounts for 8 percent of U.S. businesses, represents 50 percent of the U.S. Gross National Product, and spends $45 billion annually on IT. Currently only 4 percent of the medium-sized businesses utilize a wide area network. Spending will increase if more attractive pricing for Internet and information technology (such as ASP services) can be offered to SMBs and because of this, we have recognized the SMB market as the prime market for hosted applications. Enterprise customers have largely deployed Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP), customer relationship management (CRM), and communication/collaborative applications yet they do not have an immediate need for an ASP-model offering these applications. SMBs, however, represent a significant market opportunity since they do not usually have a wide portfolio of these applications available to them due to costs associated with purchasing and deploying these applications. Our eCommerce strategy will center on the four P’s of marketing (product, price, place, and promotion).

Product

We are offering five different kinds of application solutions

• Titan Inventory Management (TIM)

• Titan Point of Sale (TPOS)

• Titan Database Management (TDM)

• Titan Supply Chain Management (TSCM)

• Titan Project Management (TPM)

Traditional software vendors sell ERP applications to enterprises and these enterprises in turn hire system integrators and business process consultants to integrate business processes into the applications. Customization, large initial outlay, and an extended deployment period characterize a traditional application implementation process. We, as an ASP, however, operate in a different fashion. We have opted for standardized application templates for our solutions that capture the most prevalent business processes. Minor customization may be required, and customization services can be provided through in-house expertise or they can be outsourced to a system integrator. We will streamline system integration and business consulting in an application deployment process in order to take advantage of economies of scale.

Price

We will charge an Upfront fee plus Monthly charges. Upfront fees will be charged for integration, consulting, and/or customization. We will give the option of transferring software and hardware assets to customer after a defined period. Monthly fees are based on usage, number of names users, or number of concurrent users.

Place

Place is not of prime concern to us, since all our software packages run on our servers. We own and manage all the hardware and software assets and offer the applications as a service to a customer. We supply these services from a central location, over the Internet or a private network, as opposed to running on the customer’s premises.

Promotion

Marketing the software is crucial to the sustained growth of Titan Software. The most cost-effective means of promoting the software will come through regional and national tradeshows. Additional marketing strategy will encompass direct mailings, print advertising, broadcast fax, customer referral promotions, and public relations.

SWOT Analysis

We have undertaken a SWOT analysis to help us identify our strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats that face us. Carrying out an analysis using the SWOT framework helps us to focus our activities into areas where we are strong and where the greatest opportunities lie.

STRENGTHS OPPORTUNITIES

More than 40 years of combined expertise between us.

Current/Powerful technical infrastructure.

Our solutions opt for standardized application templates that capture the most prevalent business processes requiring minimal integration.

End-to-end customer care and service guarantee

Largely untapped mid-size market.

Networks are becoming content- and application-aware.

Technology advances in server- and network-based computing

High demand of hosted applications.

Businesses want faster deployment of new applications as well as timely upgrades to their current applications to stay competitive. We can offer a viable alternative to in-house deployment.

There is tremendous market momentum in developing applications that can be hosted over the Internet.

WEAKNESSES THREATS

High demand and limited resources.

Reliable network connectivity. Competing Services( KPMG, Interpath)

New Technologies

Obsolescence/old technologies

Security (both authentication and intrusion detection) is a major requirement for successful content networking.

III. Technical Specifications and Requirements

Server

The Titan Software website is to be hosted (rented) through a reliable outsource company, which would provide the following essential tools

• A dedicated web-server with AMD Athlon 1800+ and 51MB of RAM

• A dedicated mail-server with 100GB/year of data transfer and 50GB of ROM

• 4/7 live support line and Ping (ICMP) Monitoring

• Updates on new and usable technology via email

We will need all the capabilities of a dedicated IP because in many cases we would not be able to get by with a shared IP. Most importantly, renting a dedicated server would allow Titan Software to host not only the e-commerce website but also our ASP-based software products. In addition to this, the dedicated option would also come with greater customization options, more bandwidth, and security.

To ensure maximum uptime, ping (ICMP) monitoring is critical. If one of our servers fails to respond to the automatic ping request, tech support should attempt to contact Titan Software via telephone and email. If they cannot be reached within 0 minutes, the hosting company should go ahead and reboot the ill server(s).

Start-up installations and components should include

• Windows NT 000 or higher

• Internet Information Server 5.0

• Mail-Server (SMTP, POP, and IMAP)

• Web-based Email Application

• Firewall Software (maintained)

• SFTP Service with SSH software

• ASP Classic .0

• Remote Control Solution (PCAnywhere, Radmin etc.)

• Urchin Web Stats

• All Microsoft Data Access Components constantly updated

• FrontPage Server Extensions

• Dynamic PDF Writer Component for back-end reporting

Titan Software enjoys the flexibility to add more components because the server will be strictly dedicated to our company.

Each sale of our products will be finalized with a confirmation email including the login information of the customer. It is therefore crucial that the email server is secure, maintained well, and 100% configurable. Titan Software administrators will be able to create email accounts, set up auto responders, forwarding and aliasing. Security of the emails sent out can be assured with the purchase of Digital IDs, which will encrypt email contents and attachments, protecting them from being read by unauthorized parties. Each transaction will also be authentic and encrypted with an SSL certificate in order to keep our users’ personal information such as their credit card numbers and addresses private.

Developers and administrators will be constantly updating files on the server. If a regular FTP program is used, the ftp port 1 will be used frequently and eventually it will be “sniffed” by intruders. Just setting up a separate FTP listener does not provide enough security according to network experts because the data is still sent with a clear text protocol. However, creating an SSH tunnel between the client and the server would encrypt everything sent across the network. Even though SFTP is slower than FTP, it is the most secure way of transferring sensitive files.

Client

TitanSoftware.com and Titan Solutions will perform best when

• HTTP Client is MSIE 5.0 or higher

• rd party cookies are accepted

• SSL .0 option is enabled

Development Tools

Page standardization is to be done with included CSS files. For simple image, table, and form formatting, FrontPage is useful with the addition of its server extensions. ASP developers prefer to use Dreamweaver and GoLive since both provide efficient tools to reduce redundancy and an FTP connection client can be used in conjunction with third-party Secure Shell (SSH) programs.

IV. Website Design

Needs Analysis

Prior to creating our website layout, we performed a needs analysis to prevent wasting resources on building a site that ultimately does not provide our customers and internal users what they need. In addition, our website deployment strategy also considered the strategic objectives of our business, the behavior of potential online visitors, and the alternatives offered by competitor organizations, otherwise Titan Software will likely fail in all or many of its performance measures.

Our project team allocated approximately 5% of its resources towards needs analysis, competitor research, website specification, and mockup design. While it is very tempting to rush these important processes and move quickly into the programming and implementation phases, patience and solid project management will yield substantially better results.

As a software company that offers a full range of products to small and mid-sized companies, Titan Software made several important discoveries during the needs analysis phase

• Customers expect the website to serve as an extension of the company with respect to customer support and account management.

• The look and feel must be clean, professional, and on par with competitive websites.

• Colors, fonts, and images should reflect a company that is highly capable with respect to technical software development, but not too “techie.”

• New website must be optimized for 800x600 screen resolution… More than 65% of visitors to the company’s previous website used screen resolutions set at 800x600

• Potential visitors are not interested in bells & whistles… Instead, want solid content, professional graphics, and no broken links.

• Navigation should be fast, simple, and highly intuitive.

The overriding message that resulted from our needs analysis is to deploy a website that serves the needs and expectations of the users, reflects the objectives of the organization, and balances form and function.

Technical Design Considerations

To meet our design objectives, Titan Software enlisted a project team that included both programmers and graphic designers. Our past experience has led us to conclude that programmers tend to design unattractive websites while designers tend to focus too much on look & feel. To make sure we don’t fall into this trap, we designed the website using a variety of best-of-breed applications including Adobe PhotoShop, Adobe Illustrator, and Adobe GoLive. By using the Adobe suite of products, we were able to achieve seamless compatibility and extremely efficient file sizes.

The key to professional website images is to start with very high quality, professional photography. Most of the original images and photography used throughout the website were provided courtesy of www.gettyimages.com. Getty is one of the largest distributors of licensed and royalty-free photography on the Internet. The database of available images is so extensive, we were able to specify a particular look & feel for each image need and identify an image that matched that need exactly.

By specifying a website that fit neatly within a Windows browser with a screen resolution of 800x600, we were able to layout tables accordingly. All tables, images, and text are nested within a main table sized at 70 pixels wide. The objective is to fill most of the user’s screen with content without the need for horizontal scrolling.

Design and editing are made easy by using “include pages.” The idea is to generate many separate pages that contain individual elements of the displayed page. For example, any given page has a header, a navigation bar, a main image, and a copyright notice. Rather than programming each of these elements for every single page, we programmed each one just once. When a page needs one of these elements, a table in the displayed page calls for one of the include pages to be inserted. This way, the programming becomes much more efficient and the result is transparent to the end user.

Navigation is accomplished using a Javascript menu bar. Again, we programmed a single instance of the menu bar and “included” it in an empty table located on the top of each page. The result is a menu system that is fast, simple, and easy to use. It is compatible on nearly all browsers and accommodates a balanced combination of text and graphics.

V. Company Organization

Management Structure

Based on the nature of our industry and the products/services that Titan Software will provide, we have chosen to utilize a functional structure within our company. A functional structure is one that groups employees into departments based on similar job functions. A functional structure is ideal for small companies because it allows for specialization and efficient use of resources. Specialization within our application development department could prove to be highly beneficial, as it would allow us to more easily satisfy customer requirements as well as give us a potential technical advantage over our competitors.

Our company would also develop and foster a culture that would allow for high delegation and internal entrepreneurialism. Since the requirements within the industry are rapidly changing, high delegation allows for quick responses to environmental changes. In addition, an entrepreneurial emphasis encourages employees to think “outside that box” which could ultimately lead to new ideas that could be converted into competitive advantages.

Organizational Structure

The organizational structure of Titan Software will consist of an Executive Management department at the top, with four other departments below. The four lower departments are Application Development, Technical Support, Sales and Marketing, and Operations.

The Executive Management department will be responsible for all the strategic and some of the operational plans. They will also create the mission statement, goals, and objectives and create/monitor their strategies to be aligned with these goals.

The piece of art I chose to discuss in my paper is a Black-Figure Neck-Amphora that came from Attica, Greece in the late 6th century B.C. There are a total of 5 characters depicted in the painting. The first is Herakles, who was the Greatest of Greek Heroes. Herakles was born in Thebes and the son of Zeus and Alkmene. Also in the painting is Kerberos who was Hades’ watchdog for the underworld and has three heads, a serpents tail, and a lion’s claws. The very relevant person for recognizing the paintings historical context is, Athena, who is the goddess of wisdom and Herakles half sister. And last but not least, Hermes, who is the god of speed.

In this particular piece Herakles and Kerberos are being watched by Athena and Hermes while they meet with a king. It is probably showing Herakles on one of his adventures to complete the twelve great labors. The objects in the painting are still life and they are standing in a throne room. How I can tell is by the position of the king, he is sitting down with an audience to the left. There is a very detailed design on the neck of the amphora but no real picture that would maybe describe its use.

The lines in the image are thin, suggesting that a very fine point tool was used to carve the detail into the clay surface. The lines show the masculinity of the heroes and give an impression that they were extremely strong beings. All of the characters in the painting are very organic in shape, but then the design on the upper and lower potion of the vase are very geometric with the same design wrapping around the entire vase. The organic shape of the gods and the mortal king show how the Greeks closely relate themselves with those of a higher entity. There are only two colors on the vase and that is, the brownish color of the clay that makes up the vase. And the black part of the vase which was neither glaze nor pigment but a slip of clay that was first made black by shutting off the oxygen in the second phase of the firing process. The artist creates an illusion of space by adding an intricate design of would looks like stems and flowers on both sides on the amphora near the handles. The space is neither deep nor shallow because there is no background to the painting. The atmosphere definitely sets the illusion of space but still the lack of background makes the image appear flat. The texture is very smooth as any other glazed clay vase would be, and you can feel the slips which are very smooth bumps almost unseen even from a profile view.

The reason I may know the story behind this painting is because of the presence of Athena and Herakles. That is also why I stated her as being a very relevant person for recognizing the historical context. Hera was the wife of Zeus but not the mother of Herakles. Since Herakles is the son of Zeus and Alkmene, Hera hated Herakles with a passion. Hera sent two serpents to attack Herakles in his cradle but he strangled them as an infant. After that she caused him to go insane and kill his wife and children. For his punishment he had to complete twelve great labors. And while Herakles was completing these tasks, Athena, who is watching over Herakles in the painting, watched over him throughout his adventures. And when Herakles was finally done with the twelve labors he was awarded immortality. I think this piece of work depicts that journey, but only a time when he was either completing a task or finding out his next mission. Or it is was when Herakles finished his twevlth labor, which was to kidnap Kerberos. And in the painting it shows Herakles taking Kerberos to Eurystheus, the king of Tiryns and Mycenae. It was Eursytheus who Herakles had to serve for his punishment.

Well, in conclusion I feel that the painting on the amphora is an excellent work of art that shows how the Greeks were fascinated with the design of the human body and how well they are able to recreate that on any given canvas. And also from my own findings I think is it safe to say that the artist made a painting that was true to history or myth.
