I think the best memory I have of my childhood isn’t some great adventure that I went on or some little group of friends I hung out with. It’s more of a role model. This was someone I only had the joy of knowing for about six years but she made the biggest impact on my life. You may think her name is strange but that’s only because I named my grandparents after their pets. Her dog’s name was Skippy so I, of course, called her Grandma Skippy. She was not my actual grandmother if you want to be technical; she was my great-grandmother. I didn’t have a great-grandfather because he died many years before I was born.

Most of the things I remember about her happened right before my family moved to Tennessee, when I was about four or five. At least once a week my mom, my sister, and I went to her house. On the way there I would always forget where we were going and I would say, “Where are we going again?” and my mom would reply, “We’re going to see Grandma Skippy.” I would get so excited about going to her house.

When we would get there, we would always do the same thing. We’d go inside and sit on the couch while Grandma Skippy sat in the same chair she always sat in. She and my mom would sit and talk about anything going on in the world. If you asked her how her day was she would say, “The birds are singing and the sun is shining; it’s a beautiful day.” My sister and I would just sit there while they talked because she didn’t have any toys or anything at her house to keep us entertained. Sometimes just to give us something to do, we would jump off the fireplace. We’d stand on the edge and my grandmother would say, “One, two, three… jump!” and we’d both jump off. My sister and I would always end up going outside and playing in the front yard. Whenever my great-uncle was outside we would follow him to the backyard. There he had a garage built just for the band organs and player pianos that he collected. He would make one of the pianos start playing and my sister and I would pretend we were the greatest pianists in the world. After a while we’d go back inside and she offered us cookies. Little did we know it was the same plate of cookies every time, so they would be stale but we’d eat them anyway.

Every time I went over there I would go into her room and play with her dolls and glass figurines. The dolls were really old and most of the glass things were very fragile; amazingly I never broke anything. She would always give me something like that to take home with me. It didn’t matter what it was, if I wanted it she would let me take it with me. We still have a big box with everything in it.

Even though I loved going over to her house, that’s not what makes me remember her most. I’m sure that if you ask anyone that knew her they would say she was the sweetest person they’ve ever known. I can’t think of a single time that she put herself before someone else. She cared more about others than she cared for herself. She always had something positive to say about every situation. It didn’t matter what you did; she’d always congratulate you. She was always so proud of anything that you accomplished, even if it was just jumping off of the fireplace.

I remember one day in first grade my mom came to pick me up from school. She came up to me and told me to go get in the car while she talked to my teacher. Little did I know, my mom was telling her that my grandmother had passed away and I would be out of school for a while because the funeral was in Michigan. When my sister and I got home my mom sat on the couch and told us she got a phone call from one of our relatives; Grandma Skippy had passed away. At first I really didn’t believe it. I remember thinking, “How could this have happened? People like her just don’t die; they don’t deserve it.”

Now I understand that everyone has his or her time to go and I guess that was her time. I know she’s in a much better place now. I miss her a lot but I know she’s always with me. I know she’s always there saying how proud she is of me for everything I’ve done in my life so far, even if it is just jumping off of the fireplace. She taught me to be a good person and to thank the Lord for every day I’m alive. “The birds are singing and the sun is shining; it’s a beautiful day.”
