In the province of the mind, what one believes to be true either is true or becomes true.

-John Lilly

The assignment required me to assess the possible outcome of the Barnum Effect on people by means of performing a simple experiment entitled The Person-Tree Test. The test was relatively simple I looked for a participant, and given a pencil and a sheet of paper, I allowed my participant to freely draw a person and a tree, saying that the said drawing will more or less reflect his personality. Upon receiving the accomplished sheet of paper, I asked my participant to wait awhile for 0 minutes as I "evaluate" his work. I returned to him after the said time, his "personality assessment", which consists of 6 general statements I have copied verbatim from a reading, at hand. I gave him the sheet of paper, and as he reads his "personality sketch", surprisingly, he nods in total agreement.

The exercise required a participant who has not taken Psych 101 (the Introductory Psychology course), lest the results might be confounded. Some how, most of the people I know have already taken the Introductory Psychology course, so my original plan, since I was left with no choice anyway, was to approach any random person. However, by some stroke of luck, I chanced upon one of my orgmates for the time being that I was at PHAn, and she was with a friend, who also happened to be my former busmate back in high school, and who is now a second year student from the College of Engineering, taking up Industrial Engineering. I walked up to him and asked nicely if he could participate in my little experiment for my Personality class. He agreed, which gave my heart a tiny jump for joy. Oh boy.

Do my essay on Suspending My Disbelief: The Barnum Effect CHEAP !

As I gave out the instructions for the test, I would say that he was very open to it. He even thought that there were still other things that I will ask him to draw, so he only occupied a fraction of the paper. When I clarified that he could use the entire page for his drawing, he laughed and he marked his previous work with an X mark. He started anew, this time more detailed and more, I should say, artistic the tree even bore fruits.

I returned after 0 minutes to give him his results, and I was quite amazed that he was nodding in complete agreement as he read those 6 general statements. He even asked me about what process I used in arriving at his traits. I smiled and told him that there was a distinct relationship between his drawings and his personality, that the characteristics of impromptu drawings reflect an individual's personality. I guess he was satisfied with my not-so-true answer since he didn't have any further questions. Subsequently, I gave the evaluation sheet for him to accomplish. I was then not surprised that he gave a 5 (extremely accurate) for the test's accuracy. In addition, as for his other comments about his results, he wrote, (and to quote), "More people should try it. I was greatly amused by the fact that most/all the results were correct."

I was impressed.

The debriefing was not exactly easy. Luckily, he was very open to the idea. At first, he was quite confused, he had this notion that given the aforementioned test an example, anybody can be a psychologist and analyze other people's personalities. I explained to him that the point of the experiment was the exact opposite, stressing that the traits he thought were very personal to him also apply to almost everyone, and there's nothing really personal attached to it besides that. He was very amenable to the entire exercise, and didn't mind about the part wherein a little deception was involved. Whew.

Performing the exercise made me think about the manner by which I easily believe the things that are presented to me. I myself am a fan of numerous personality tests, especially the ones found within the Internet. I think individuals possess this inherent thirst to know more about themselves, and are exceptionally interested especially when these are seen through other people's eyes, like personality tests. No wonder we always cringe upon receiving personality test results, saying to ourselves, "Eerie. This is so me. Wow." We then admire our psychologists and parallel them to everyday palm readers, online quizzes and astrologists. Some things are just too easy to accept as true.

Nevertheless, this exercise further strengthened good judgment and criticism of these kinds of activities that claim to reveal my personality. It urged me to think twice before accepting, to examine whether they are valid and reliable. After all, it's no personality test if it were too general, too Barnum-ish.

However, on some occasions, it wouldn't hurt me to suspend my disbelief and believe in tarot card readings, the daily horoscope, and my online quiz results. For certain, they're still interesting to me, in their own little respects.

For many poets, writing about nature and love is an easy feat. The poets who are considered in the Confessional Genre draw their influence from something quite different though. They use their own life experiences of pain and suffering to create great poems. In Theodore Roethke's "Dolor," Sylvia Plath's "Mirror," and Sharon Olds' "The Planned Child," these three poets confess their inner pain about matters that effect them and, they have created hits.

Roethke's poem focuses on pain, with the use of the word "dolor." It is about an office building that is so monotonous, that your individuality is taken away from you. The pencils are even saddened because they are "neat in their boxes, dolor of pad and paper-weight" (p 78, ). They are not used, not even to lie on a desk as a placeholder. The room is supposed to be an "immaculate public place" (p 78, 4), but there will always be an unseen film of dust. Roethke is comparing the people from the office to the dust on the walls by saying that the dust is "alive, more dangerous than silica,/sift, almost invisible" (p 78, 10-11). The dust shows more life in the preceding line than the people that are supposed to be working in the office building.

In Plath's poem, she focuses more on her inner beasts. She splits herself up into a mirror and a real individual. The mirror is described to "swallow immediately/just as it is, unmisted by love or dislike" (p 1187, -) to show that you are who you are in front of a perfect reflection of your self. You are not allowed to be lied to in front of a mirror, because the mirror will project the exact duplicate, including feelings, thoughts, and even hatreds, of the "real" person. You "turn to those liars, the candles or the moon" (p 1187, 1) to help pacify your hidden demons because you can't handle the truth the mirror projects to you. Plath uses the mirror as an object in which to allow herself to grow. She considers the mirror a "little god, four-cornered" (p 1187, 5) because that connection to God helps her know that she won't be lied to; she has the belief that she can trust what she sees as the absolute truth. She finally accepts her formation from "a young girl, and in me an old woman/rises" (p 1187, 17-18) because she realizes that she is in the growing process everyone must partake in, as a part of life.

Olds' storyline moves a girl hating her mother, to accepting that she was truly wanted. She resents the fact that her mother "made a chart of the month and put/her temperature on it, rising and falling/to know the day to make me" (p 84, 4-6) because she feels that she had to be planned to be wanted. She doesn't understand the point of planning a human being. She would have rathered been "conceived in heat,/in haste, by mistake, in love, in sex" (p 84, 7-8) because to her it would have been more exciting. Not until a friend pointed out that she was wanted, did she finally accept that "not the moon, the sun, Orion/cartwheeling across the dark, not/the earth, the sea-none of it/was enough, for her, without me" (p 84, 1-). She considers finally that nothing from the preceding quote was enough to fill her mother's passions of having a child of her own. Olds' character finally realized that her mother had good intentions in planning her because it showed how much she was wanted.

coming soon. I will place the essay on line tomorrow. It is about the Impact of Augustus in Greece. The essay talks about the imperial cult, the genius of Augusts and what he did for religious, political, and economic suceess in ancient rome. Augustus did a great job as a leader because he desired to have a back to basics mentality and get the kingdom up to par with what good values and morals should be. I touch on the base of what Augustus did as a follower of Julius Ceasaer, and what he did to his daughter Julia for hanging out with Ovid, the perverted love poetry man.

Another paper I can submit is about Japanese psychology. It entails detailed information about the history of psychology in Japan and who were the prominient leaders of the discipline. It started in Kyoto University, then moved to Univserity of Tokyo. It explains the impact of psychology and its emergence into Japanese society.

I wrote another essay on China and the massacre at nanking in 17 by the Japanese military. It talks of the rapes, murders, stealing, prostitution, and plunderings of the chinese people committed by the Japanese. It was a devastating momment in Chinas History. The shame and guilt that go along with such atrocity was rampant. The essay deals with what measures Japan took on gaining control and showing China who was in charge.

One other essay I will get on this site is about the biograpphy of Calvin Coolige, who was president in the 10s. His life was an interesting one and you will be aboe to look at it when I get it posted.

The location is same as last chapters there isn't any change in it because they are still in the England and in some villages or rural places. I also have some evidence which proves that it took place in the rural area.

The location or setting of this novel is in England. But it doesn't mentioned any particular place; for example, any village, city, town. But after reading the novel we can say that it took place in some village of England because the whole story is in the farms and fields, so therefore we can judge that it's in some rural area. The places in England that are mostly full of farms and fields are some of the places like Sussex, Yorkshire, etc. according to the atmosphere of the novel we can tell that it's somewhere near these places. "No animal in England is free. The life of an animal is misery and slavery that is the plain truth" said Major. (Pp-)

It took place in the years "Between" 145150 because first of all the book was printed during this era. As well, by looking at way of living of Mr. Jones, and according to the tone of the story it can be judged that it's somewhere in older times. It mentioned about Mr. Jones's way of dressing, and the way he was taking care of animals, or the way they were working; for example, they used to cut the grasses or fields with their hands and use of tools without using any machines. They were heating the fields and houses with fire instead of any heater or gas, etc. It also mentioned by the Major in the very beginning that Jones is using them to make his work easier he is using them to pull rocks, pick up heavy equipments, etc. "you, Boxer, the very day that those great muscles of yours lose their powers, Jones will sell you to the knackers, who will cut your throats and boil you down for the foxhounds" said Major during his speech (Pp-5). Now this statement shows that Jones uses these animals to work on them instead of machines, which shows that they are in the villages of the England, because in the cites they used to have machines even at that times too.

The both, place and duration of the period in the novel perfectly suits each other because even in those times some of the developed cities were able to complete some of their tasks with the help of machines, but it was not too much common like after it became common in seventies. As well, after reading the novel and judging the setting that it's somewhere in the villages of England the reader will naturally think of old days because these days not many people are interested in stories that are attached to rural life and that consists slavery or shows that revolutionaries raising their voices against their masters to achieve justice. Finally, these types of stories takes place usually in rural places where government or police or any special task forces does not play any major role. Only the people who are wealthy and has excessive amount of land with animals and humans working on it, are the leaders of the area. This type of stories also does not exist on the lips of people anymore. So, therefore when someone would read the book, it must make sense to the reader that story similar to "Animal farm" must be in rural places and in older times because- as I mentioned- these stories takes place in rural places and leaders are wealthy people, similarly these kind of tradition were exist in older times. Now it's not extremism in the rural places too.

Earnest Hemingway's The Old Man and the Sea Character Analysis

The Old Man and the Sea is the story of an epic struggle between an old, seasoned fisherman and the greatest catch of his life. The Old Man and the Sea demonstrates through its characters the honor in struggle, defeat, and death. Further, it shows pride as the source of greatness and determination. For eighty-four days, Santiago, an aged Cuban fisherman, has set out to sea and returned empty-handed. Santiago is so unlucky that that the parents of his young apprentice and friend, Manolin, have forced the boy to leave the old man to fish on a more prosperous boat.

Manolin is Santiagos only friend and companion. Santiago taught Manolin to fish, and the boy used to go out to sea with the old man until his parents objected to Santiagos continuous bad luck. Regardless of his parents' demands, the boy continues to care for the old man upon his return each night. He helps the old man tote his gear to his ramshackle hut, secures food for him, and discusses the latest developments in American baseball. Manolin provides the old man with food and bait when he needs it. The character of the young boy is present only in the beginning and at the end of The Old Man and the Sea, but his presence is important because Manolins devotion to Santiago highlights Santiagos value as a person and as a fisherman.

Manolin demonstrates his love for Santiago openly. He makes sure that the old man has food, blankets, and can rest without being bothered. The Classic Notes website suggests, "Manolin is the readers surrogate in the novel, appreciating Santiagos heroic spirit and skill despite his outward lack of success." By the end of the book, the boy abandons his duty to his father. Manolin swears that he will sail with the old man regardless of the consequences when he states, "..there is much that I can learn and you can teach me everything." (Hemingway, 16) At the end of the novel, Manolin serves as a symbol of uncompromised love and fidelity. As the old mans apprentice, he also represents the life that will follow after death. His dedication to learning from the old man ensures that Santiago will live on.

Not one person telephoned the police during the assault; one witness called after the woman was dead (Gansberg 86). Martin Gansbergs essay, Thirty-Eight Who Saw Murder Didnt Call the Police, describes a true account of witnesses allowing the death of a neighbor and friend. In this essay Gasberg uses various techniques, including language and tone, to catch the readers attention.

Martin Gansberg begins his essay by luring the reader through the use of manipulative techniques the author attempts to make the reader angry, shows the reader an apathetic public, and also forces the reader to consider what he/she would do. Chief Inspector Lussen said, If we had been called when he first attacked, the woman might not be dead now, (Gansberg 86). Gansbergs use of this dialogue works specifically to try to make the reader furious. The author then demonstrates how much time elapses and how many times the killer leaves and returns to prove that the woman dies because no one steps in. In addition, Gansberg reveals that Miss Genovese is not a stranger to the witnesses or an unknown neighbor; she is a friend who most knew as Kitty. Still, Gansberg shows an apathetic public by emphasizing that not just one person, but several hear and even watch this heinous crime without making the effort to help. There are no calls to the police and no heroic attempts to aid, simply Gansberg asserts, because no one wants to become involved. We went to the window to see what was happening, he said, but the light from our bedroom made it difficult to see the street. The wife still apprehensive, added I put out the light and we were able to see better,(Gansberg 88). Gansbergs characterization of the couple reveals that they even turn out a light to accommodate their view. Next, Gansbergs technique of writing leads the reader to wonder what he/she would do if he/she ever faced the same situation. For more than half an hour 8 respectable, law-abiding citizens in Queens watched a killer stalk and stab a woman in three separate attacks in Kew Gardens, (Gansberg 86). After the reader finishes the story and realizes the outcome, the reader reflects back to this initial passage and automatically judges his own character according to the behavior of these law-abiding citizens, asking; what would I do?

In addition, Gansbergs language to grasps the readers attention in terms of specific details, emotional language, and factual concrete images. First, the details of the crime scene. Gansberg specifically states the color of Miss Genovese car, the location in which she parks and the approximate distance her parking space is from her apartment. Gansberg also incorporates dialogue so the reader can feel the emotions of Miss Genovese. Im dying! she shrieked. Im dying! (Gansberg 87). These words alone display how frightened Miss Genovese is, which allows the reader to also experience some of her fear. His final use of language is factual language, which allows the reader to recall the events as they happen. For example, Gansberg recounts what the police confirm as the exact times the attack begins and the moment it ends in death.

The final method that cathces a readers attention is through Gansbergs use of changing tones; the author displays a mixture of sarcastic, authoritative, and objective tones. But the Kew Gardens slaying baffles him not because it is a murder, but because the good people failed to call the police (Gansberg 86). Gansbergs use of sarcasm towards good people is effective, because the reader also contemplates why none of these good people help in some way. Quickly the reader forms and opinion of the foolishness of these witnesses. Next Gansbergs use of specific time frames as; It was 45 a.m. when the ambulance arrived to take the body of Miss Genovese, and his addition of excerpts from police reports, allows him to set an authoratative tone. The last type of tone Gansberg demonstrates appears to be objective. The author projects this false objectivity by sticking to the facts and times throughout the entire essay. He also never directly states his very clear opinion. It was 50 by the time the police received their first call, from a man who was a neighbor of Miss Genovese. In two minutes they were at the scene, (Gansberg 87).

In conclusion, throughout this essay language and tone become the authors primary method of capturing the readers attention. Martin Gansberg wrote the essay, Thirty-Eight Who Saw Murder Didnt Call the Police in 164. After the publication of this article in a newspaper, one would think that people would be more willing to help, but even today events like this still occur. Gansberg, Martin. Throughout high school as adolescents we form are characters and define who we are. Music having one of the strongest influences on adolescents today makes it relatively easy to classify teens. Although people listen to many different types of music and have many different types of personalities there are three common themes that most to all adolescents fall into. There is three genres persistent among teens today; Hip hop, pop, and alternative. With the overwhelming desire to be different, popular, or trendy and the evolution of MTV, the influence of ones music upon their character is very prevalent.

The Influence of hip hop amongst its listeners is probably the most prevalent. The genre of rap music tends to precede a selected amount of people. Those among this trend try to fulfill this hip hop image classified by stars of being masculine, derogatory, rich, fornicators, who treat others with little respect. It's a great image; you get all the women, your rich and you're a man's man. Obviously this image sales but why, because it's cool? People listen to hip hop because they think by association they are popular. This influences every aspect of their lives. Adolescents, through the influence of music act and react to things the way the status quo has thought them to; this in aspect of hip hop music has lead to violence, drugs, and gang related activities. These people feel that it's socially acceptable to disrespect, discriminate, and neglect people. Society has sold them through the artist this attitude of rebellion in which these kids carry out in many different ways.

The influence of pop music is stronger then most would think. The genre of teeny bopper, pop music is as influencal as others just not so apparent. Pop listeners are trend setters, starving for attention and popularity; they want to be center stage. They listen to this music because its trendy and MTV classifies it as cool. In high school you could always point them out a mile away because their so dependent on their image amongst their peers. Social acceptance is the principal goal. Teens listen to teeny bop music because all the other cool kids listen to it and that makes them cool. This influences their lives extremely; teeny boppers are more concerned with what people think then how they think themselves. Often stereotyped as being conceded, perfect, bratty and superficial, society has sold them this idea of superiority.

The alternative listener wants to be nothing but that. Angry with the industrial status quo modern hip hop and teeny bop music genres have produced, they reach for the less obvious. Listening to music usually unheard of by those who don't belong to their group, while at the same time filling the status quo of those who do. Alternative kids think that being angry, depressed, malicious, and different will get them noticed faster. People of the genre have a tight gathering of friends and people. Their music being the strongest influence on their emotional state, it really influences how these kids act and react to situations. Within filling the status quo they become quiet, shy, artistic types of people. Craving to stand out and be noticed but only by making it apparent that they don't want to be noticed. The alternative listener listens to alternative because its different, it doesn't look cool and it's not the popular thing which is just what they want.

Whether it did M&S any good, who knows? But ask any leader for their opinion on what makes for success, and theyll gladly tell you! Despite the old adage that good leaders are born and not made, it is now more widely accepted that the skills of leadership can and should be learnt and developed.Team leaders are often recruited for their operational expertise first and foremost, and not for their management or leadership skills. This is partly because of the emphasis on flatter, team-based structures, but also because it often makes sense to offer promotion to experienced members of staff during times of expansion and growth.

Unfortunately, whilst many people are keen to take on the additional responsibility, authority, and remuneration, it is risky doing so without ensuring adequate support and training. A good and experienced team leader will often make their role look effortless, but no doubt it took them a long time, many hurdles and a lot of stress to get there. Once appointed, first time leaders are often required to combine their new leadership role with existing full-time operational responsibilities.

It is up to leaders to ensure employee satisfaction by providing each of these factors. Leaders must determine specifically what will motivate their employees, and seek out ways to accomplish this. Four things that motivate people are responsibility, rewards, relationships, and reasons. In other words, people want responsibilities that allow them to use their talents and even stretch themselves; they also want to be rewarded for their efforts, even if it comes in the form of a simple pat on the back. People are motivated when they are coached to continue focusing on their goals, and this is where the relationship factor enters into the picture; leaders must develop relationships with their followers, rather than being unapproachable and shutting themselves off behind an office door. Finally, people want to know why they are being asked to do something and how their efforts will make a difference in the big picture. Doing meaningful work is an incredible motivator.

Leaders must be able to make people want to follow them - not out of fear, but out of trust, hope for success, excitement, or the promise of opportunity. Leaders should be able to create an aesthetic vision that inspires people with an ideal of what can be achieved (Maccoby, PG).

Maccoby says there are two kinds of leaders - strategic and operational. Strategic leaders create the organizations vision, while operational leaders implement the vision.

Integrity is not only a personal virtue but also an organizational strength (Goleman, PG). In order to gain followers, a leader must first gain trust. This can be accomplished when a leader practices what he preaches and is honest and forthright at all times. In the business world, this concept has perhaps become more critical than ever in recent years, due to the current corporate climate. Companies are reorganizing, restructuring, downsizing, rightsizing, merging, and any number of other methods of reconfiguration.

Many people believe that leaders are born, and not made. Presumably new born leaders behave in a different way from other babies. It is almost worth a trip to the maternity hospital to check this out!

In reality, this belief is more often than not an excuse, to justify a lack of leadership behaviour in themselves. Of course we can all learn to be leaders, we can change our beliefs, our behaviours and our personalities. If we could not, our attitudes would be the same when we are 0, 40 and 60.

There are no born leaders, however we are all born with unique strengths that help us in our leadership journeys - they are within us, and with most people, they stay within. The notion that leaders are born, and others therefore will never be leaders, is illogical, depressing and seriously limiting to every human being. The idea suggests that the moment babies are born they either have the genetics to be a leader, or they do not. This argument would be fine if the definition of leadership, and leaders, had been constant for the past fifty years, but it is not. Indeed, more has been discovered about leadership and human behaviour in the last twenty years than in the previous thousand.

Furthermore, the born argument does not take into account the effect that experience and learning has on our personalities, behaviours and on our inner selves.

Leadership is a skill and a habit. Like most skills and habits, one that improves with practice. As we become more skilled - the habit takes over - we worry less about the mechanics of doing it and focus more on the outcomes to be achieved.

And so it is with personality, much of personality is a set of responses that have become habits. Often these were developed with little forethought or awareness in school or at home. Presented with a challenge we try a response, if it works we remember it and use it again. If it works often enough, we use it without too much thought and it becomes a habit. Take any set of habits, mix and stir, and we create our own unique approach to life.

But like any habit, we can choose to change. Much long-lasting negative behaviour can be altered.

As Crick describes the process of luck and hard work that led to the discovery of the double helix structure of DNA, it is his personal virtues that resonate most notably as the determining factors of his success. He admits that as a novice scientist, his qualifications consisted of a "not-very-good degree" and limited knowledge in subjects that he was not particularly interested in, without even the auxiliary merit of any published papers (15). However, instead of deeming his lack of experience and dubitable credibility as obstacles, he transferred these ostensibly negative factors into vehicles for his success. He regaled in the fact that he was not "trapped by [his] own expertise" as were most scientists his age and had the opportunity to truly determine what he wanted to focus on as he turned his scientific training into a career. He was able to translate his ignorance, since he "essentially knew nothing," into optimism, citing that he thus had complete liberty of choice. This ability to transcend possible setbacks through his anomalous mode of problem solving was an integral part of his advancement- it allowed him to look at the problem of DNA structure with a new degree of ingenuity and inventiveness. Furthermore, Crick's strong sense of self and his confidence in his own potential distinguished him as a vocal figure in his field- he did not hesitate to offer his opinions even as they were being formulated and was therefore always a participant, instead of an observer in his field. These qualities are illuminated foremost by his manner of choosing his particular biological emphasis he did not hesitate to trust his own intuition as it was revealed through his "gossip talk." His rejection of a possible job offer when he was in the midst of deciding what to do with his life is a further indicator of his unique inner strength- not many people uncertain of where to go in their professions hesitate to take the path offered. His ambitious nature too was an obvious aid in achieving his goals and persisting in his efforts till he did so.

It is by observing Crick's ambition, enthusiasm, tenacity, passion, and ingenuity that a reader can most benefit from his autobiography, for these are the necessary elements for success in any profession and merit acknowledgement.

strategy; they market they sell to is mainly corporate business people and they offer unique

products and services. They are a growing enterprise with stores currently, but with

hopes of opening more locations by the end of this year.

The President wants people working for him that think outside of the box. They

do not wait for people to come into their stores; they go and get the customers. Eyetique

is a very proactive company. especially during this time that many companies are cutting

back. The company's innovation is another intangible resource that the company

possesses.

About 15 years ago, Eyetique introduced the Eyetique Advantage. It was

designed to get patients in the store by offering employees and family members of

participating corporate clients a 0% discount. Most recently the company's leaders have

created two new programs to meet the changing needs of the corporate clients and to

further grow business. One plan supplements a corporation's existing vision insurance

with enhanced features and added discounts. The other plan takes on the role as insurance

company for corporations that offer no vision insurance; Eyetique offers benefits such as

large discounts on frames and lenses.

They also offer a new plan called Eyetique Advantage to You, which brings an

optometrist, an optician, and a wide selection of frames, lenses, and contacts into the

corporation's conference room. They bring a marketing executive on the road with them

to get them in the door and set up the appointments. The team travels with portable

equipment for the doctor to perform the eye exams. The doctor does the eye exam, and

the optician sells glasses. They return a week later with the eyewear, and return another

two weeks later to make final adjustments and check for any other problems. They make

sure to maintain their brand image on the road by bringing in gourmet coffee, bottled

water, chocolate, and other small amenities to enhance the experience. Eyetique

researches each of the companies they go to get an idea of what price range and frame

selection are needed, but they never judge a book by its cover so they always include the

highest end frames in their selection including Cartier.

The strategy of going out to get customers sets Eyetique apart from many of its

competitors. Currently they have a competitive advantage, but what they are doing is easy

to imitate so they could lose this competitive advantage. That is why they are continually

trying to come up with new ideas and stay innovative.

MEDIA LITERACY

How do I get my information?

1.Newspapers.

I usually only read the newspaper about four times total in a month. I don't read the Orange County, or Los Angeles Times at all besides the comics(...heh eh..Garfield, you lazy kitty..) I'm not to concerned with getting information from either one, because neither one really has any information that pertains to me directly.

Do my essay on Media Literacy: How do i get my information? CHEAP !

That is why I read the "Garden Grove Journal". It's my local newpaper, and it's published every week, and you can pick up a copy of it for free at just about anywhere in Garden Grove. It gives me local news, local events, and local opinions. These are things I'm going to directly need, since this is where I spend about 5% of my life, so That's why I don't read too many other Newspapers.

. Weekly Magazines.

None. I don't read any at all, Simply because The opinions and views expressed in most of them aren't worth the paper their printed on. Also, I barley have enough money to buy my monthlu magazines, so buying weekly is an impossibility for me.

. Monthly Magazines.

The only information I get from monthly magazines, is the info I want. I read EGM (Electronic Gaming monthly), PSM (Unnofficial Playstation Magazine), Gamepro, Gamers Republic, Animerica, and any other computer entertainment software magazine I can get my hands on. I'm very interested in Video Games because, well..I'm addicted. Also, Video Games are becoming less of just "games", and are becoming more and more of a new type of entertainment medium, and artform.

As far as news goes...I don't get any info from my monthly magazines about the "happenings" of the world. I just don't read those types of magazines, because I was never interested in them before.

4. Non-Fiction books.

In truth..I think I only read about two non-fiction books a year, and this is on account of that they are usually books that are mandatory reads from my english teachers. Most of them I have enjoyed, or thought very thought provoking. My favorite non-fiction books are books based on the years of 140-145. I like to read about real evnts of World War II. I happen to find the it fascinating I feel that it was the last war in our nations history that really meant anything, so it's of high interest to me.

However, the last Non-fiction book I read was entitled "Mankind a Tale of Blood and Sweatsocks." by Mick Foley. I think that was the best non-fiction book I've read that wasn't about WWII.

5. Radio.

I get information from the Radio on a sporadic basis. Somtimes, My dial is switched onto KFWB news 8 for "all-around" coverage on what's going on in the world, or traffic reports. Also, I listen to a lot of Music Radio stations, mostly KROQ. Occasionaly you'll hear news reports on KROQ, but most of the time, it's just celebrity info, or jokes being made about world events.

6. Cable Television.

Thi is where I accumulate about 85% of my information on world news. Most of my time is spent on flipping between Fox news, MSNBC (I don't trust them because their owned by M$), and CNN. I like the "O'Reiley factor", but I rarley pay attention o he names of the announcers. I could care less about them ,and their life storry (name included), because I'm wathcing the news to get the NEWS, not remember some bald guys name.

Cable television is also my secondary source of entertainment.

7. Broadcast Television.

Before I got cable, all I ever watched was broadcast. However, since getting the internet, and cable television, broadcast television has never once really swayed me to watch it again. I've maybe skimmed back past it every now and then (Mostly for Simpsons, and other entertainement like that) but not as my main channels.

8. Computer Services.

I don't look for news on the internet. However, I use MSN explorer (heh..yeah I know) and when I start it up, It has lots of headlines, and spotlights on both World news, and entertainemnt news. Otherwise, I never check for news on the net.

. Cable TV service.

First of all, I never knew this existed. Secondly, I wouldn't use it, because My cable bill is high enough, and putting even eight more dollars on it ould screw me over.

10. Other Deliverey systems.

I don't use any other systems, because I hardly use the basics as is.

Opinion of the current state of the media

The media is rat race, and should be treated as nothing more than as such. All sides want viewers, and all sides are no better than the other. Ratings is what they need, and most people are dumb enough to give it to them. Fine with me. I don't mind. The media is there for my pleasure, and my enjoyment anyways, so Let it do what it wants. I don't care what marketing ploy, or political crisis they bring up, because I've realised that all media is being controlled by someone, somewhere. The best thing to do is syphon through the stuff that does not appeal to you and only bother with stuff that matters to you, and you yourself.

Please note that this sample paper on Media Literacy: How do i get my information? is for your review only. Successful interviewing begins with preparation. In order to be successful, you should always seek to retain control of the process. You can do that by doing your very best in each and every interview. Treat every interview as if it were the only one you will ever get. The following section will give you some instruction how to prepare yourself for an interview.

The first and key element to successful interviewing can be summed up in one word attitude. If you want to rise above others with better experience, better grades, or better anything, you will need to work on developing a highly positive work attitude. You can show your winning attitude in the way you present yourself. Incorporate the actual words positive attitude, excellence, and striving to be my best into your interview language.

Second important part is a practice. Before you go through an actual interview, you should practice through a mock interview. It is an opportunity to work out your weaknesses, to practice your interviewing technique and answers live. It is also a chance to hear constructive feedback from someone who can guide you toward improving your interviewing style and presentation.

The next aspect of job search preparation that can truly set you apart is employer research. Employer research is what brings you together with those who have the power and authority to potentially offer you a job. The source locations where employer information can be found include the Internet, your Career Centre, Campus Library, Public Library, and direct company contact.

After that it is the time to check the dress code. The interview is not the place to exhibit your flair for the latest in fashion style. Even though many companies have relaxed the internal company dress code, interviews still follow the conservative standard. Business suits are still in. And do not forget the shoes! Make sure your shoes are conservative, clean, and polished.

Finally, do not forget, what you say is as important as the way you say it. Start whit a small talk to create comfortable setting. Maintain eye contact while speaking. Try to be yourself. Smile from time to time, pay attention to your gestures, make sure they are natural and meaningful. Listen carefully, ask for clarification on points that are not clear . Show your interest and curiosity about the position asking questions.

Finding a job and finding a good job are two very different things. Following this simple instructions can help you accomplish that goal. All you need is to properly prepare yourself for your job search. No one owes you a job. You have to put fort the effort to find it.

Please note that this sample paper on Prepare yourself for a successful job interview is for your review only. In order to eliminate any of the plagiarism issues, it is highly recommended that you do not use it for you own writing purposes. "Politics and the English Language"

What we need from you is to provide us with your detailed paper instructions for our experienced writers to follow all of your specific writing requirements. The language of politics is one that is universal to all languages. In 148, George Orwell published an essay entitled Politics and the English Language, which discussed just that. In paragraph 1 of this essay, he claims, "political language…is designed to make lies sound truthful and murder respectable, and to give an appearance of solidarity to pure wind." This is absolutely right, it was in Orwell's time, and it still holds true today, in a time of mass media, corporate influence, and colossal magnitudes of sensationalism. I plan to explain what Orwell meant by "political language" and show how those who misuse it to their advantage can get away with blatantly lying, yet still amassing support of the misled.

Right at the beginning of his essay, Orwell claims civilization to be decadent and therein infers that civilization's language must be decadent as well. This is an interesting point that I did not agree with until I finished the reading. Orwell then goes on to explain, "The decline of a language must ultimately have political and economic causes," which is definitely true. Keep in mind that his essay was written in 146, shortly after World War II had ended, so he is speaking from a time where nearly everyone in the world knew of society's evils. In addition, throughout the essay, Orwell uses exceptionally strong expressions to describe the current state of the English language by using the analogy of a downtrodden individual succumbing to alcoholism, and then referring to the "slovenliness" of Modern English, explicitly written English... However, Orwell also claims that this same slovenliness of the English language can be reversed…

Now in his extremely well written essay, Orwell makes it extremely clear about what needs to be done to preserve proper English in writing. His first step in doing such was to show various examples of what he refers to as "specimens of the English language as it is now habitually written." Interestingly enough, he quotes the work of two of the world's most educated people (he quotes two professors), two miscellaneous publications, and even Karl Marx himself. With these five examples, there are five different things wrong with each. The first example, which is from an essay by Professor Harold Laski, is erroneous in the eyes of Orwell due to its ambiguity and its capability to confuse. The second example is from a writing by Professor Lancelot Hogben, and Orwell mocks this writing in a humorous fashion, by turning the statement around to ridicule it, due to the fact that the word "egregious" is apparently misused. Example number three is from an essay on psychology, and Orwell again takes a sarcastic tone by calling it meaningless. The fourth quote is from Karl Marx's Communist Pamphlet, and Orwell criticizes it for its usage of "stale phrases." Finally, the fifth example of bad English that Orwell cites is from a miscellaneous letter in Tribune and he criticizes it for its use of large words but lack of meaning. The majority of these claims by Orwell are definitely significant, although I think he happens to overreact in the case of Karl Marx's Communist Pamphlet, because it is undoubtedly personal preference that decides what a "stale phrase is.

Orwell specifically combats four vices in writing in his essay. These vices are dying metaphors, operators, pretentious diction (mainly the overuse of foreign phrases), and meaningless words. Dying metaphors are also known as clichs. In both Orwell's opinion and my opinion, these are a blatant form of a lack of creativity, and are sometimes brutally misused. They are serious vices that plague what in many times are excellent pieces of writing or speech, but they just lack flair. Orwell is definitely justified in his argument against these. Operators are phrases consisting of many words that can be replaced by much fewer words. Even the best writers today are guilty of using these, and I actually prefer using some operators, because in my opinion, they can add flair to a piece of writing. Maybe this is because Orwell wrote his essay in 146, and what he was saying about the decadence of the language was true, or it may just be a difference of opinion. Pretentious diction is mainly the overuse of foreign phrases and jargon, which have the capability of misleading and confusing the reader. In most cases, pretentious diction can be avoided easily, but sometimes it is necessary, such as in Karl Marx's Communist Pamphlet. This is why I think Orwell's earlier condemnation of the Communist Pamphlet was unjust and a big excessive. Finally, meaningless words are exactly as they read, meaningless. Orwell explains how many political words are viciously overused to the point where their meaning is lost, which leads to authorities such as the government and the media to mislead and deceive the public by using these words. I fully agree with this point that Orwell brings forth. This is a major way that propaganda works. You can see this taking place today in the media and even in the school system. The blatant overuse of the word "democracy," when they attempt to label the American government as such is a great example. No one defines this word in the same manner, yet everyone uses it. In my opinion, the American government is not a democracy because we currently have a war-mongering president that was not even elected by the people, though the next man may out rightly disagree with me. It is things like this that definitely do ruin the fluidity and effectiveness of words in a language, and preventing this is a great way to prevent such authoritative attempts at deception.

With the process of globalization today, the world is becoming more and more of a global marketplace. With the technological advances in transportation, resulting in possibility of traveling anywhere in the world in a matter of hours, and communication, people can instantly communicate all over the world through telecommunications and the internet. All of this results in constant expansion in every possible direction. Companies are expanding to opposite ends of the globe and individuals are traveling further and more often. In return, this causes intermingling of cultures, many times resulting in much animosity on the part of the natives.

This is not done only by big corporations, whom build huge factories in small villages, that are poverty stricken areas of the world. This is also done in subtle ways where the people may not notice that there is a problem at first. At first it may seem as a blessing, but only after the problem has been brewing for several weeks, months, or years, is when people start to notice it. These problems may cause tensions among the members of a community or between the two different groups of people. Many times when it involves a big corporation invading small communities with its big factories, it completely alters the natives' way of life. The encroachment on one culture over the other isn't always as direct. The globalization of the world also encourages drug trafficking and other illegal activities. This results in small, third world country communities changing their means of support to supply the demand of the of the modernized world.

The tribe in Africa that the class watched the film about, was a group of hunters and gatherers for hundreds of years. This group of people managed to survive for hundreds of years using only their own system of living. This group had no idea of the notion of money. There was no sense of individuality. The community worked and lived together as a whole; whatever one person had, they shared with the rest of the community. When a child was raised, it was raised by everybody. This is how they lived and were able to survive for hundreds of years, even with the land on which they lived was being dramatically reduced in size by the world. Nevertheless, with no other choice, the tribe gradually started adapting to the world around them.

As time progressed, a change in their way of life was noticeable. It is noticed that individuals started wearing button-down shirts and slacks as opposed to the pieces of cloth they used to wrap themselves in. This didn't particularly cause a problem, but the simple horse did. In the beginning, the hunters of the group would set out on foot for days at a time to hunt down one giraffe. It was difficult and tiresome work. On occasions it would take days at a time just to track down a single giraffe. When they were introduced to the horse, it made hunting much easier than it was before. Hunting down a giraffe would take a much shorter period of time and would require fewer hunters to go out at one time, making life easier for them. The down side to this was that they were hunting so many giraffes now that it was a possibility that they were going to starve since all the giraffes in the area were being killed.

How are your neighbors with you? You are lucky if they treat you as a member of their family, but what about if it is the contrary? What about if they treat you as a thing not as a human? If this is your situation, I know how you are feeling. I know it because I am living this kind of life. In other words, I do not get along with my neighbors. From the day I moved into my house, I have had to deal with their unfriendly, dirty, and noisy way of living.

First of all, my neighbors are very unfriendly people, and that is why they are hated. For example, during the day when I see them, they do not say hello to me. Sometimes, I try to have a conversation with them, but they always ignore me or give me a cold look. Since the day they ignore me, I began to hate them for being the way they are. In addition, my neighbors are not only mean with me, but with my children, too. Sometimes, when they are playing in front of their house, my neighbors come out and tell them to leave using a filthy language that scare my children.

Second, the awful thing is not only that my neighbors are unfriendly, but they are dirty, too. For example, during the week, they often throw their trash in front of my house. Although, whenever I see it, I always clean it, but later they throw more. They are irresponsible people who do not care about others around them. Moreover, their yard looks like a jungle with empty cans and bottles and other trash among the big grass that is growing. Why do not they care about it? How lazy they are!

Finally, the other thing that makes my neighbors mean, besides being unfriendly and dirty, is that they are very noisy. They have three children and the smallest, the baby, is the one that makes all the noise during the day. He is always crying because he is hungry or because he wants something. Why do not his parents try to lull him? Besides the baby, they also have one big dog that barks all the time. For example, the other day I was going to study, but then it began to bark, and thanks to its harmful noise, I could not concentrate on what I was doing. Moreover, every weekend, they are always having a party at their house. So the loud music and the strange noises from the drunken people begin at noon and end at midnight.
