Mark Twains The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is a novel about a young boys coming of age in the Missouri of the mid-1800s. Themain character, Huckleberry Finn, spends much time in the novel floatingdown the Mississippi River on a raft with a runaway slave named Jim.Before he does so, however, Huck spends some time in the fictional town ofSt. Petersburg where a number of people attempt to influence him. Before the novel begins, Huck Finn has led a life of absolutefreedom. His drunken and often missing father has never paid muchattention to him; his mother is dead and so, when the novel begins, Huck isnot used to following any rules. The books opening finds Huck living withthe Widow Douglas and her sister, Miss Watson. Both women are fairly oldand are really somewhat incapable of raising a rebellious boy like HuckFinn. Nevertheless, they attempt to make Huck into what they believe willbe a better boy. Specifically, they attempt, as Huck says, to sivilizehim. This process includes making Huck go to school, teaching him variousreligious facts, and making him act in a way that the women find sociallyacceptable. Huck, who has never had to follow many rules in his life,finds the demands the women place upon him constraining and the life withthem lonely. As a result, soon after he first moves in with them, he runsaway. He soon comes back, but, even though he becomes somewhat comfortablewith his new life as the months go by, Huck never really enjoys the life ofmanners, religion, and education that the Widow and her sister impose uponhim. Huck believes he will find some freedom with Tom Sawyer. Tomis a boy of Hucks age who promises Huck and other boys of the town a lifeof adventure. Huck is eager to join Tom Sawyers Gang because he feelsthat doing so will allow him to escape the somewhat boring life he leadswith the Widow Douglas. Unfortunately, such an escape does not occur. TomSawyer promises much--robbing stages, murdering and ransoming people,kidnaping beautiful women--but none of this comes to pass. Huck finds outtoo late that Toms adventures are imaginary that raiding a caravan ofA-rabs really means terrorizing young children on a Sunday school picnic,that stolen joolry is nothing more than turnips or rocks. Huck isdisappointed that the adventures Tom promises are not real and so, alongwith the other members, he resigns from the gang. Another person who tries to get Huckleberry Finn to change isPap, Hucks father. Pap is one of the most astonishing figures in all ofAmerican literature as he is completely antisocial and wishes to undo allof the civilizing effects that the Widow and Miss Watson have attempted toinstill in Huck. Pap is a mess he is unshaven; his hair is uncut andhangs like vines in front of his face; his skin, Huck says, is white like afishs belly or like a tree toads. Paps savage appearance reflects hisfeelings as he demands that Huck quit school, stop reading, and avoidchurch. Huck is able to stay away from Pap for a while, but Pap kidnapsHuck three or four months after Huck starts to live with the Widow andtakes him to a lonely cabin deep in the Missouri woods. Here, Huck enjoys,once again, the freedom that he had prior to the beginning of the book. Hecan smoke, laze around, swear, and, in general, do what he wants to do.However, as he did with the Widow and with Tom, Huck begins to becomedissatisfied with this life. Pap is too handy with the hickory and Hucksoon realizes that he will have to escape from the cabin if he wishes toremain alive. As a result of his concern, Huck makes it appear as if he iskilled in the cabin while Pap is away, and leaves to go to a remote islandin the Mississippi River, Jacksons Island. It is after he leaves his fathers cabin that Huck joins yetanother important influence in his life Miss Watsons slave, Jim. Priorto Hucks leaving, Jim has been a minor character in the novel--he has beenshown being fooled by Tom Sawyer and telling Hucks fortune. Huck findsJim on Jacksons Island because the slave has run away--he has overheard aconversation that he will soon be sold to New Orleans. Soon after joiningJim on Jacksons Island, Huck begins to realize that Jim has more talentsand intelligence than Huck has been aware of. Jim knows all kinds ofsigns about the future, peoples personalities, and weather forecasting.Huck finds this kind of information necessary as he and Jim drift down theMississippi on a raft. As important, Huck feels a comfort with Jim that hehas not felt with the other major characters in the novel. With Jim, Huckcan enjoy the best aspects of his earlier influences. As does the Widow,Jim allows Huck security, but Jim is not as confining as is the Widow.Like Tom Sawyer, Jim is intelligent but his intelligence is not asintimidating or as imaginary as is Toms. As does Pap, Jim allows Huckfreedom, but he does it in a loving, rather than an uncaring, fashion.Thus, early, in their relationship on Jacksons Island, Huck says to Jim,This is nice. I wouldnt want to be nowhere else but here. This feelingis in marked contrast with Hucks feelings concerning other people in theearly part of the novel where he always is uncomfortable and wishes toleave them. At the conclusion of chapter 11 in The Adventures ofHuckleberry Finn, Huck and Jim are forced to leave Jacksons Island becauseHuck discovers that people are looking for the runaway slave. Prior toleaving, Huck tells Jim, Theyre after us. Clearly, the people are afterJim, but Huck has already identified with Jim and has begun to care forhim. This stated empathy shows that the two outcasts will have asuccessful and rewarding friendship as they drift down the river as thenovel continues.

The key to a successful organization in many ways is motivation. It is one of the most difficult tasks that a manager faces because everyone is different. The methods that are used to motivate employees must be tailored to fit each one. Every organization should have motivation plans in placed to show how they value employees. Some of the most effective ways for managers to motivate staff include giving praises, recognition and positive feedback. Motivation is the responsibility of all supervisors. The purpose of this paper is to propose a motivation plan that can be used to implement in any organization to build commitment to the companies goals from employees.


Tying in the companies goals together with the employees individual goals is what a supervisor strives to accomplish. To work together towards the organizations goals managers must offer employees something of value that will put the charge in their step. Their main objective should involve increasing performance through self-motivation, rather than having to use external motivation such as conditions of service. Motivation should be built into the organization system so supervisors will have the opportunity to communicate and motivate staff on their performances through evaluations or words of praise. "Managers must be able to recognize individual differences, match people to jobs, use goals and ensure that goals are perceived as attainable, individualize rewards, link rewards to performance, and check the system for equity." (Robbins, 001) The supervisors show employees how to fulfill their needs while accomplishing the goals of the organization. Motivated employees are happy, committed, and productive.


One of the first things that must be done is an assessment of the motivation issue. Management must assess how to motivate the staff and to determine if there are signs of de-motivation. If the assessment shows serious/critical signs of de-motivation, an action plan needs to be implemented. The question that is probably most often asked by managers is "How do I motivate people at work?" To answer that question discusses with the staff on what their work goals are and how they feel it should be accomplished. Constantly provide feedback on what staff has done well and where improvement is needed. Always encourage the staff to express their views on their performance. Continually evaluate the staff's performance throughout the appraisal period rather than focusing on periods where their performance was particularly good or bad. Provide all the tools necessary and consider the training and/or development needs of staff.


Individual basis motivation can be achieved using worthwhile work, power of acknowledgement, and personal credibility. People need to know that what they are doing has a meaning. This can be accomplished by delegating tasks that challenge the skills and abilities of staff. Giving staff full responsibility of a task from start to finish and then let staff know the "why" to a task. Also let the employees know the impact of the result of their work while explaining the company's visions and goals of the organization.


The power of acknowledgement addresses the issue of recognition. A word of encouragement or a sense of respect can go a long way in motivating someone. This power can be used by encouraging the staff and praise them when something is done right. When you see performance improvement recognize quality performance of individual team members and thank them personally and give credit to team members for their assistance to your achievement. Show appreciation for the value of risk-taking even if it ends with mistakes. An employee needs to see that you are behind them.


Personal Credibility deals with supervisors providing an open environment in which employees feel comfortable to make suggestions. When this environment is achieved, loyalty and commitment from employees is achieved. Managers must then personally abide by the rules and laws of the organization, be a role model for team members. A manager needs to be a motivated manager and be brave enough to admit when they are wrong. Speak positively all the time and be organized with a open mind to suggestions and opinions.


Managers have a responsibility to make the environment motivation friendly. This can be done through people. Accomplish this by giving people work that demands their best and opportunities to learn while keeping team members informed of new developments. Encourage problem solving instead of faultfinding disagree, but never say, "you're wrong". Deal with mistakes constructively and be ready to coach team members like recommending training courses for team members. Show you care by going to team members' desk instead of asking them to come to your office when providing feedback.


Motivation is about communication, working together, sharing common goals, knowing one another and helping one another do a more meaningful job. The end results of motivation are employee loyalty and longevity, desired behaviors and performance and employee accomplishments. It is a mental challenge to set your mind for the improvement of staff motivation. The employees depend on us as managers to look out for them.

This misconception of women by media leads to sever problems like eating disorder. Famous personalities who are or who had been suffering from eating disorders include Tracy Gold, Christina Ricci, Princess Diana, Magali Amadei. It has taken these personalities' years to confess about their eating problems, yet people tend to be inspired and influenced by such celebrities.


Eating disorder is not a joke, once trapped in this disease then the person realizes the mistake that he/she have done. "Mirror, mirror on the wall, who's the fattest one of all"? Fredrick Douglass is a name that will forever be remembered in American history. However, his life was not an easy one and there were many people who played important roles in his upbringing, adolescence, and even adulthood. Whether good or bad, these people shaped Douglass' life immensely and taught him everything he needed to know to survive. Aside from himself, Sophia Auld was extremely important to his story. Many feel that in order to play an important role in a person's life one must have an entirely good heart. However, this is not always true as seen in Sophia Auld.


Douglass came to live with the Auld's at the very tender age of eight. At this time, a child is easily influenced yet also has his/her own idea of what life should be like. At eight Douglass was already feeling the backlash of American slavery at its peak. However, he learned more from Sophia about slavery and freedom alike than he had learned from any other person he had ever, or would ever, know.


Sophia Auld's character was double sided. In the beginning she was a kind and generous human being. Although, as time progressed, she became just another slave owner caring for nothing more than her own happiness and luxury. Nevertheless, it was these characteristics that made Sophia such an importance to Douglass' story.


When Douglass arrived at the Auld household, Sophia was a woman of the "kindest heart and finest feelings". (710) Upon learning that Douglass could not read or write, Sophia immediately began to teach him the alphabet as well as the spelling of short commonly used words. This act of kindness opened innumerable new doors for Douglass. In time, this would become one of the major turning points in his life. Sophia's naïve nature toward slaves allowed Douglass to see that there was more to the world than slaves and slaveholders, that he alone had the power to change his destiny.


If Sophia had continued to teach Douglass to read and write she would not have been of such extreme importance in his life. However, the fact that she abruptly ended his lessons when her husband claimed that giving this knowledge to Douglass would "forever unfit [Douglass] to be a slave" (711) proved to Douglass the importance of the subject. It was here that he learned the power that the white man held over the black man.


The act of ending Douglass' lessons drove Douglass to strive even harder to succeed in mastering the act of reading. Through Mr. Auld's harsh words about a knowledgeable black man and Sophia's actions to obey her husband, Douglass learned more about slavery and freedom than he ever could have from a book or newspaper. Sophia's kind actions and her husband's cruel actions were both extremely beneficial to Douglass' eventual survival. It was in this way that Sophia Auld's character was of utmost importance to the story.


Sophia's teachings, more than anything else, inadvertently showed Douglas that the power to enslave and control others was based upon the amount of knowledge one had obtained during his/her life. From this point on, Sophia Auld was not the caring compassionate person she once was. However, it was now too late. Sophia had already, without knowing it, taught Douglas the "pathway from slavery to freedom". (711) From this point on, Douglass embraced the privilege of knowledge and in turn, took it as far as he could.


Sophia Auld's character was important for many reasons. To begin with, Sophia showed Douglass that not all white people were cold hearted and cruel. Although this appears to be a small achievement, it allowed Douglass to begin his journey from the black outsider to the black equal. Before Sophia, Douglass viewed all whites in the same manner. Even though he had heard good things about Northern whites, Douglass still had to experience it for himself in order to believe anything that was said. By being herself, a compassionate white female, Sophia proved to Douglass that people have the potential to change for better or for worse. In addition, she also proved to Douglass that all people have the ability and desire to love and care for others regardless of race, creed or color.


Furthermore, Sophia's generosity and cruelty alike were extremely important. Without realizing it, Sophia set Douglass on his path to freedom. Before Douglass set foot in Boston he was a sheltered child who knew nothing more than the fact that whites were in charge and he must obey them at all costs. By the time he left, Douglass had an entirely different perspective of life and of people in general. After leaving Boston, Douglass was able to realize that he did not have to abide by any one's rules but his own. He learned more than reading and writing in Boston. He learned that he was his own person, that he had control over his own life, even if it meant that he had to endure more hardships than others may have to. As well, Douglass realized that, although the situation may not be fair and may not always go in his favor, he alone had the ability to shape his future.


Overall, Douglass' time with the Auld's proved to be the first major turning point in his life. It was here that Douglass realized he was a human first and a slave second. And it was here that he realized that he could change this and become a human first and second and never a slave. Sophia was the first kind influence Douglass and ever encountered in his life, even though it was only for a short period of time. However, the time spent in the Auld household proved vital to the outcome of Fredrick Douglass' life. In general, Sophia Auld taught Douglass everything about life, whether intentionally or not. For this reason, she had an extreme importance in the story.

I think that these are just a few questions that should be asked and answered when trying to "read" or gain an understanding of a photograph (your own understanding). Agee and Evans try to get this point across by not providing text with the images so your "reading" of the photograph will not be hindered by text that could and would influence your thought. As Mitchell states, "The photographs are completely separate, not only from Agee's text, but from any of the most minimal textual features that conventionally accompany a photo-essay no captions, legends, dates, names, locations, or even numbers are provided to assist a "reading" of the photographs"(517). In not providing any of these things Evans and Agee make it hard to connect the photographs with the text " it resists the straightforward collaboration of photo and text"(51). I think this resistance is needed and very essential when trying to fully "read" a photograph and understand it.


Personal associations are essential when trying to link photo and text. Because this collaboration is so difficult to achieve the only thing left to do is to try to link them by relating them to one's self and life and also looking at the details of the photograph (e.g. facial expressions, clothing, etc.) and coming up with you own understanding or "reading" of them. As Mitchell states, " The second is the intimate fellowship between the informal or personal essay, with its emphasis on a private "point of view", memory, and autobiography, and photography's mythic status as a kind of materialized memory trace imbedded in the context of personal associations and private "perspectives""(516). What Mitchell likes and what Agee and Evans focus is, is to try and achieve this "reading" without being invasive or intrusive. Many would probably argue that even in trying to let the pictures speak for themselves, the reader would become invasive and intrusive. Although this is true, Agee and Evans try to undercut surveillance by not providing text with the image, which would be totally invasive and intrusive for them to try and explain these people's lives. Evans, Agee and Mitchell believe in no categorizing, pigeonholing, labeling, or judging. As Mitchell states, "what gives us the right to look upon her, as if we were God's spies"(5). I think the resistance of Agee's text and Evans images are meant to deliberately prevent easy collaboration, therefore the linking of image and text is extremely difficult but is not meant to be linked but to stand alone as separate "readings".


What if we were looking at photos with text accompaniment? Would we then be able to fully "read" the photograph? No, the text would strongly influence our thought when trying to understand and relate to the photograph. Mitchell states that " there is the root sense of the essay as a partial, incomplete "attempt", an effort to get as much of the truth about something into its brief compass as the limits of space and writerly ingenuity will allow. Photographs, similarly, seem necessarily incomplete in their imposition of a frame that can never include everything that was there to be, as we say, "taken""(516). I really like that fact that in Agee and Evans, Let Us Now Praise Famous Men they have the photographs in the front without context and when the reader or viewer finally does get to the words or text they are in "Book Two", meaning the photos were "Book One" and they have already "read" them. I also like the fact that Agee and Evans allowed their photographic subjects to pose themselves. I think that photos with text accompaniment limits the "reading" of the photograph and also hinders the "reader's" creativity and critical thinking process.


In conclusion, " The "taking" of human subjects by a photographer (or a writer) is a concrete social encounter, often between a damaged, victimized, and powerless individual and a relatively privileged observer, often acting as the "eye of power", the agent of some social, political, or journalistic institution. The "use" of this person as instrumental subject matter in a code of photographic messages is exactly what links the political aim with the ethical, creating exchanges and resistances at the level of value that do not concern the photographer alone, but which reflect back on the writer's (relatively invisible) relation to the subject as well and on the exchanges between writer and photographer"(515). There is a clear imbalance of power here and I agree with Mitchell because I believe that his theory or views on photographs and text tries to cut back on this imbalance of power.

In the poem "Ode on a Grecian Urn" by John Keats, the speaker struggles with the trials and tribulations of life compared to immortality. This is illustrated by the lines "Fair youth, beneath the trees, thou canst not leave Thy song, nor ever can the trees be bare" (v. 15 &16). The people on the urn do not have to confront aging and death, but they cannot experience anything because they are frozen. Even though they will always have their youth, the lover's will never know a different song, or know what winter feels like, or even how it would feel to grow old.


In the poem, the speaker tries to engage with the scenes on the urn at three different occasions. Each time he asks different questions to the urn, hoping that different approaches will somehow better answer his questions. In the first stanza, he examines the picture of the "mad pursuit" (Keats v. ) and wonders what story there is behind it, asking the questions "What men or gods are these? What maidens loath? What pipes and timbrels? What wild ecstasy?" (v. 8 & 10). Of course, the urn cannot tell him the who's, what's, where's, and when's of the stories it depicts, so after an endless number of unanswered questions, the speaker decides to analyze the pictures himself and abandon this kind of questioning. He uses his imagination to illuminate his mind of what the scenes actually depict. Through the speaker's imagination and description of the scenes, the reader is also involved, making a triangle of imagination between the speaker, the urn, and the reader.

In the first stanza, he sees the two lovers trying to catch each other, but cannot because they are frozen. He realizes that even though they will never actually touch, they will also never grow old. He explains this by saying, "Bold Lover, never, never canst thou kiss…She cannot fade, though thou hast not thy bliss, Forever wilt thou love, and she be fair!" (v. 17, 1-0). The passion and love they have for one another will always remain, but the two young lovers will never know what it is like to touch each other's lips or give into their passion. They will forever "want" and be "forever panting" (v. 7). The speaker sees both sides of the coin, he becomes aware of the negative side of their immortality, but he also realizes the soft pipes will play on, never to be forgotten. This makes the speaker question his own achievements and success in life. He does not want to leave the world a failure, having never felt like he lived, loved, or did something to be remembered by. In other words, he wants the soft pipes of "his" song to play on even after he is gone.


In another scene, the speaker sees how lonely and deserted the town will always be because everyone is frozen outside. This is significant because those people will never be able to experience anything else in life, they are permanently "frozen" at the "green altar" (v. ). The poem says,


And, little town, thy streets forevermore


Will silent be; and not a soul to tell


why thou art so desolate, can e'er return (v. 8-40).

The townspeople will not be able to ever return to their homes, never knowing what it is like to understand the meaning of "home sweet home."


The speaker leaves the poem questioning the pros and cons of his own mortality. He sees the good side of being frozen in time, but he does not envy those people. He says,

He feels that living life to the fullest is more attractive than immortality. Even though the urn teases the speaker with his immortality, the speaker knows the urn never experience anything, it will remain in the midst of the other woe time presents. The speaker knows he will never escape all of the negative aspects of life, but he is willing to take that chance. To experience life overall might be the best gift, which makes being mortal worth it.


To conclude, each of the two parties has a different outlook on the other. The speaker sees the urn as ignorant to the way of the world, while the urn sees the speaker not understanding the secrets that life holds. That is what the poem tries to illustrate when it says, "'Beauty is truth, truth beauty,'that is all Ye know on earth, and all ye need to know" (v. 4-50). In other words let there be art for art's sake, the Grecian Urn paints a picture, but it does not necessarily need to have a purpose. But it is, to put it mildly, an adventurous hypothesis.(11) Its also inconsistent with Cornells own suggested model for Year One why should the victor in that putative power snuggle carefully record his rivals names as equal to his own?


So forget any idea of archival evidence. What we have is the tradition, and what matters is how we handle it. 'In each case, says Cornell, 'one must ask, first, whether there are grounds for regarding a story as ancient, or as a relatively late invention; and second, whether there are reasons for thinking that it might be based on fact. Well, and good, as far as it goes. But then 'The burden of proof lies as heavily on those who wish to deny as on those who wish to affirm.(1) And that, with the greatest respect, just will not do.


The burden of proof is on whoever challenges the prima facie presumption. And what is the prima facie presumption here? Not, I think., that authors writing five hundred years later, in a tradition of written history no more than two hundred years old, are likely to have reported the events accurately, or even recognisably. In such circumstances, to treat 'Why shouldnt it be true? as a no less valid question than 'Why should it? comes pretty dose to abdicating the historians responsibility.(1)


Better, in any case, to ask a different type of question. What sort of stories are they, and how may they have come about?

When she left her room that filled her with power. It was taken from her again at the bottom of the steps. Her will, dreams, hopes, freedom, and life were taken as Mr. Mallard stood at the bottom of the stairs.


The second story is about a wife that goes through similar things as Mrs. Mallard. John is a husband that is dominating. He treats his wife like a child and expects her to follow his every command. Jane gives into his every command. John believes his wife is sick but not that sick. He wants her to recover from her illness quickly. He gives her a chance by taking her to a remote area. Jane repeats why John has brought her there. "He said we came here solely on my account, that I was to have perfect rest and all the air I could get".(75) By taking her to this remote area, she is stripped from having any type of enjoyment even company. He is strong minded about this so much that he gets his sister to make sure his wife follow his rules.


When she wants to talk to him, he blows her off and laughs at her. She makes a remark about John not wanting to understand her. He acts as if he hasn't been sick or had any problems in his life. "I suppose John never was nervous in his life. He laughs at me so about this wall-paper"!(76)


She knows that he loves her, but will not let her decide for herself. Jane begins to cry more often than usual. Her will power is beginning to break. She sees that and makes a remark "It is getting to be a great effort for me to think straight. Just this nervous weakness I suppose".(7) She speaks a lot about woman creeping. It turns out that she is the one that is creeping because during the day time her sister-in-law is there watching her. This represents the bars on the wallpaper that holds the woman in. When night fall comes, she moves around more because everyone is sleeping. This is the only time she can creep about without someone watching her.


She begins to realize that her time is running short. Now is the time to overcome her illness and receive the freedom she wants. She no longer wants to be guarded or ignored. The woman in the wallpaper is her. The husband and sister-in-law kept her wrapped up in so many emotions. To break out of the wallpaper, she finally makes her husband listen to her. This was the beginning of her freedom. She even says this. "I've got out at last," said I, "in spite of you and Jane. And I've pulled off most of the paper, so you can't put me back"!(85)


The last woman wasn't only dominated by her husband, but she was ridiculed by her peers. Women are judged more harshly than men. Mrs. Wright was being judged without a jury. She was once a pretty woman filled with life. After Mrs. Wright marriage and no children, her husband was cruel to her. He would have faulted her for not being able to bear children.


After all the years of a dominating husband, he broke her will and spirit. She no longer took to fancy herself. The men that searched her home made cruel remarks about her house keeping. She let the house go, her friends, and any other plans she had. Mrs. Hale and Mrs. Peters were the only ones that showed her any pity. Mrs. Hale knew that Mrs. Wright's husband had to be cruel to her because Mrs. Wright was a lively person twenty years ago. She made this remark to make everyone look at Mrs. Wright in a different way. "She used to wear pretty clothes and be lively - when she was Minnie Foster, one of the town girls, singing in the choir".(4)


The ladies noticed a box of Mrs. Wright and found a bird that had been killed. They felt that this bird was Mrs. Wrights' only pleasure. They believed that Mr. Wright killed the bird because the birdcage door was broke and had been pulled apart. Mrs. Wrights' right to love and heart to care about other things and people were taken. Another advantage with multi-track classes students could then take accelerated classes over the break time if they wanted to or have the choice of going on vacation instead. Michael Sadowski states, "According to the San Diego-based National Association for Year-Round Education, there are now ,460 year-round schools in 41 states"(). The increased in number of year-round schools is a most convincing piece of evidence, this proves the year-round schools work and provide children with a better education.
