Introduction

In this project I will be analysing two short stories Turned and A Lorn Milkmaid. I will specifically be focusing on the Women in both stories, discussing their personalities, their problems and how they deal with them. At first I will analyse the Women from both stories separately, I will then discuss all of my analysis and see if any of the women are similar

We start with the women in the story Turned.

The first of the two women I will analyse is Mrs Marroner. She is married to a very rich man. She is a very intelligent woman with a PH.D, She considers herself very superior, and is very reserved; she prides herself on her ability to control her emotions with her strong Boston - bred attitude.

The second Woman is Gerta. She is a Swedish and is employed by the Marroner's as a maid. Although poorly educated and young, Gerta is extremely patient and with careful tuition takes to new ideas and learns quickly.

Now that we have a basic outline of the female characters, the story line can now be explained in brief.

The Marroner's are living comfortably with their maid Gerta. Mrs Marroner is anxious to teach Gerta the ways of the world. Mrs Maroner is a very cold person but has decided to try and use her knowledge and saint like patience to educate Gerta. Gerta is an eighteen year old Swedish housemaid, who a least in Mrs Marroner's eyes is very naïve. Mr Marroner has to go away on business suddenly, Greta and Mrs Marroner are left alone to look after one another. Mr Marroner is delayed by a few months, Mrs Marroner notices that Gerta is looking unwell, at first she suspects home sickness, then illness which are both denied by Gerta. Eventually Mrs Marroner suspects something which Gerta can't deny pregnancy. Mrs Marroner is annoyed when she thinks of all the painstaking work she did with Gerta, teaching her to be more refined with men. However, with the combination of her feeling sorry for the poor "child" and Gerta begging at her feet for forgiveness, Mrs Marroner decides to let Gerta stay until she has had the baby, then get them both back to Sweden somehow. A few weeks' later two letters arrive, Gerta is out and so Mrs Marroner takes them in. The letters are both identical one for Mrs Marroner and one for Gerta, they are both from Mr Marroner. At first Mrs Marroner doesn't think much of it, Mr Marroner has sent postcards and things like that for Gerta in the past. She left Gerta's letter on the table and took her own into her room. It started "My poor child", Mrs Marroner thought this was very strange, as she read on it gave details of Gerta's pregnancy, and that Mr Marroner was the father. He enclosed a fifty dollar bill and told her if Mrs Marroner finds out be sure to leave your address at his office. Mrs Marroner was outraged she waited for Gerta to get home and told Gerta to open her letter, and read it. Gerta is reluctant but does as she was told. Her letter starts "My dear wife". It is obvious that Mr Marroner has mixed up the letters and put them in the wrong envelopes. Gerta is sent away to pack by Mrs Marroner, as she packs Mrs Marroner then has a long cry (much against he principles), She then has a cold shower and trys to think. Mrs Marroner regrets sending Gerta away she knows Mr Marroner took advantage of her; she goes up to Gertas room to find her sleeping, Mrs Marroner goes back down stairs.

When Mr Marroner gets home he finds the house deserted, no note or anything. He suspects his wife knows he goes into work the next day. Mrs Marroner's solicitor presents him with a letter, it just read "we have gone, I will look after Gerta, goodbye". Mr Marroner stays on his own in the house until curiosity causes him to hire a group of private detectives to find his wife. They eventually track her down to a guesthouse, which she is running under her maiden name. When Mr Marroner goes to see her, she is sitting in the front room with Gerta and her baby. She simply says, "What have you to say to us?" And that's where the story ends.

Let us examine the women in this story

Gerta

Not much to say really, a young Swedish girl. Mr Marroner takes advantage of her innocence and gets her pregnant. She is helped by the much more interesting…

…Mrs Marroner.

Mrs Marroner is definitely the most interesting woman in the play. She is educated, has the patience of a saint and despite her upbringings has a warm heart. Lets look at how she handles the key situation in the story, when she finds out what her husband has done. After she sends Gerta away to pack, she goes to her own room and lets all her emotions out by having a big cry. Then she has a cold shower and a warm bath, to clean her body and mind so she can think. She reaches the conclusion that Mr Marroner took advantage of Gerta. She therefor leaves the house and takes Gerta with her, so she can help raise the baby. That takes a lot of courage and shows what type of women Mrs Marroner is.

We now move on to the story A Lorn Milkmaid.

As this story is in a different style to Turned, I'm going to set my analysis out differently. Rather than write a compacted version of the whole story, I'm going to look at a specific scene in the story, for each woman and analyse her reactions etc.

We start with Rhoda

Rhoda is a middle aged dairy worker; she lives in a cottage with her son. Rhoda used to be in a relationship with the owner of the dairy she works at, Farmer Lodge. The farmer ended the relationship a few years ago, he now intends to marry another woman who is considerably younger than him.

The scene we are going to analyse for Rhoda is one in which Mrs lodge comes to visit Rhoda's cottage. Mrs Lodge is not at all like Rhoda imagined, she has brought with her some useful articles including a new pair of boots for Rhoda's son. Mrs Lodge is dressed in fairly ordinary clothes as opposed to the rich silk dresses; Rhoda had mentally fitted her with. Rhoda's son is absent and so Rhoda answers the door. Mrs Lodge bids Rhoda good day. Rhoda cautiously returns the compliment. After various points of conversation, Mrs Lodge shows Rhoda her arm and says. "One night when I was sound asleep, dreaming I was away in some strange place, a pain suddenly shot in my arm there, and was so keen as to have awakened me". Rhoda looked at the arm; it had bruising on it. Rhoda thought back to her own dream the night before, how she seized the arm of Farmer Lodge's new wife. Rhoda asked Mrs Lodge how she did it, Mrs Lodge did not know but she thought it would soon disappear. Having delivered the boots Mrs Lodge left, but Rhoda could not stop thinking of her dream.

We can see from this particular this scene that Rhoda is a very insecure person, possibly slightly aggressive particularly towards Mrs Lodge. We know that Rhoda has always been jealous of the farmer's new wife, it is always on her mind even when she is sleeping, she is dreaming of attacking Mrs Lodge. However, when she actually meets Mrs Lodge she finds her to be a kind woman rather than the ogre she visualised in her dream. However, when Mrs Lodge asks Rhoda if she knows what may be wrong with her arm, Rhoda does not tell her about the dream. This is a further example of Rhoda's deep hatred for Mrs Lodge.

We will now look at a scene in which we can analyse Mrs Lodge.

This scene is set some years later the mark on Mrs Lodge's arm is still there, it has also grown into a much bigger scar, which has practically engulfed her whole arm. Mrs Lodge has been told by a spiritualist that the only way she can rid herself of this ailment is to touch the body of a man who has been hanged. After careful thought Mrs Lodge decides to take the spiritualist's advice. When the Farmer Lodge is away on business, Mrs Lodge gains access to a prison in order to touch a hanged corpse.

Mrs Lodge is in a grey mood; she notices how quickly the man must have been thrown into the cheap coffin because his coat was still sticking out. Looking very sombrely, she walks over to the coffin.

Mrs Lodge is a very gentle woman, she is prepared to go to any length to please other people. It was immaterial to her how her arm looked; however Farmer Lodge refused to touch her until the arm was better. When Mrs Lodge went to the prison she was so considerate as to notice how a common criminal had been placed in his coffin. As she approached the man, she was truly distressed about his execution. This is the ultimate example of Mrs Lodge's kind nature.

Conclusion

It is clear that the women in these two stories have very little in common. However they all have their own qualities and faults. Gerta the maid from the story Turned has her innocence, however she also has her poor level of education. Mrs Marroner from the same story has her high level of education, but also has her tendency to jump to the wrong conclusions. Rhoda from the story A Lorn Milkmaid has her vulnerability, however she also has the ability to hate another person to the point of obsession. Mrs Lodge has a quality, which is also a weakness her basic kindness allows people to take advantage of her.

I would say the one thing that these two stories in common is the sentiment that no one is perfect.

I recently was involved in a situation at work that has caused some problems for me both personally and professionally. My hope is by sharing this situation with others I might be able to come away with new insights that might help avoid future problems. I work at Priority Express Couriers which, as you might expect, is a courier company. In addition to delivering individual packages on a same day, on demand format, we also provide structured pre-scheduled route services for clients that have more consistent, specific logistical needs and it is from that realm of the businesses that this case study was born.

One of the regularly scheduled routes that we provide is for Ikon Office Solutions. Their regional distribution center is located in Oaks Pa. roughly 40 miles northwest of Philadelphia. Ikon sales & service personnel from the Mid Atlantic coast region, who require supplies, order the them from the Oaks distribution center during the day. After processing and preparing them for shipment our company retrieves them for delivery throughout the night. Because neither the Ikon distribution center or the delivery locations are staffed 4 hours a day, a system has been created that allows our couriers security access to the various places they need to go. The route, as it is structured now, runs without any direct communication between Ikon personnel and priority Express staff.

One specific night an Ikon manager called in the afternoon and left a message to "let us know" that there would be "a lot" of product for the route later that night. The instructions were that "if it all does not fit in the van pack what you can and leave the rest for tomorrow". The courier, upon arrival, found enough products to fill nearly two vans. He did is we were instructed from the message and began his route leaving four of ten stops behind for the next day. As a courtesy we thought that we should call the sales reps that were not going to be receiving their deliveries so that they would have an idea what had happened. Our database had work phone numbers for both reps however one phone number just rang and rang until it went dead with no voicemail options or recorded message to direct us. The other number immediately picked up and directed us to input our service code number. We had never heard of this "service code number" and had no idea what it might be. We then called the distribution center number and were able to leave a message with our "contact" concerning what we had done. We also attached a copy of the notes regarding our problems to the paperwork we submit to our supervisors.

The next night we arrived to find the same message and the same solution was applied. The third night we arrived for work and there was no message from Ikon however our courier was once again not able to fit everything into the van. Even though we didn't get a call we continued with the process that we had used the prior two days. At 00am the next morning the Ikon distribution center manager called furious that we had deviated from the protocol by taking action without direct communication with the distribution centers or the reps and that we were likely to lose their business as a result. We immediately reviewed our procedures book for Ikon and found that the only other contact information we had was the reps cell phone numbers which had printed underneath then in red bold letters COURIERS DO NOT CALL REPS CELL PHONES.

Our supervisors wanted to know why we had not followed proper "procedures" and why we had not alerted them about the problems we had been encountering?

Business Ethics

For a business to be socially acceptable, it must have ethics involved. the business must be able to keep both employees and consumers content. A business must also look socially acceptable even when its misleading society. To be sucessful at this you must know whats involved in keeping a company honest, dependable and trustworthy. Its always important for a business to be socially acceptable. Businesses should always be ethically responsible.

To really make a business sucessful their are four steps you can take to achieve socail responsiblity as well as being successful in general. For any business to be sucessful it must know how to keep both consumers and employees happy. If this acomblished its proved that a organization will report a reduded emploee turnover rate and productivity will increase. (http//www.business-ethics.org/corpadv.html) If a place of business has sound business morals then it will usually have these findings first key point is keep consumers and employees content will help business because the consumers will be more willing to come back and the employee will be more encouraged to work productivly. Second step to follw would be make sure the public is aware of your good practice and sound morals. Comsumers look to shop at places where the place of business hold stong ethics and follows through on them. Its sometimes the primary conmsideration for a consumer. (http//www.business-ethics.org/corpadv.html) The final step is a business should make sure to have international regulatory development which bring legal and financial securities to business to provide standards of conduct to employees. (http//www.business-ethics.org/corpadv.html). With these steps you can maintain a buisiness which is socially responsibles and has strong ethics.

You must always tell your public the truth even if it involves lying while being honest. a company must always be honest but can make things look to be too good to be true. food companies use the tactic all the time on nutrition informationlabels on pacages. For example an oreo bag gives you the information per a serving of one cookie the information is all true but its decieving because who would only eat one cookie. That how you can lie but still be honest in the business world. You should never make a claim you cannot back up. maing a clain in which you cannot support is uaully a claim that can cause a company a lot of money because the get sued for false advertising.as long as you are making a claim you can back up you are keep yourself in the clear. (http//web.gbrown.ca). being able to lie while telling the thruth is a great marketing tactic to have it can bring in a lot of money especailly working with food you can decieve people into eat more of the product because they dont realize exaclty what they are intaking.

Nutrition is the relationship of foods to the health of the human body. Proper nutrition means that you are receiving enough foods and supplements for the body to function at optimal capacity. It is important to remember that no single nutrient or activity can maintain optimal health and well being, although it has been proven that some nutrients are more important than others. All of

the nutrients are necessary in different amounts along with exercise to maintain proper health.

There are six main types of nutrients used to maintain body health. hey are carbohydrates, fats, proteins, vitamins, minerals, and water. They all must be in balance for the body to function properly. There are also five

major food groups. The groups are fats and oils, fruits and vegetables, dairy products, grains, and meats.

Exercise is also an important part of nutrition. Exercise helps tone and maintains muscle tissue and ensures that the bodys organs stay in good condition. Healthy eating without exercise will not result in good nutrition

and a healthy body - neither will exercise without nutrition. The most important thing about exercise is that it be practiced regularly and that it be practiced in accompaniment with a healthy diet. It is also desirable to

practice more that one sport as different sports exercise different areas of the body. Carbohydrates, proteins, and fats are the sources of energy for the body. The contained energy is expressed in calories. There are calories per gram in fat and there are about 4 calories per gram in proteins and carbohydrates. Carbohydrates are the main source of energy for the body. This energy is mostly

used for muscle movement and digestion of food. Some sources of carbohydrates are grains, fruits, vegetables, and anything else that grows out of the ground. The energy in carbohydrates is almost instantly digested. This results in a quick rise in blood sugar which is soon followed by a drop in blood sugar which is interpreted by the body as a craving for more sugars. This sugar low may also result in fatigue, dizziness, nervousness, and headache. However, not all carbohydrates do this. Most fruits, vegetables, legumes, and whole grains are digested more slowly. Fats, which are lipids, are the source of energy that is the most concentrated. Fats produce more that twice the amount of energy that is in carbohydrates or proteins. Besides having a high concentration of energy, fat acts as a carrier for the fat soluble vitamins, A, D, E, and K. Also, by helping in the absorption of vitamin D, fats help make calcium available to various body tissues, in particular, the bones and teeth. Another function of fat is to convert carotene to vitamin A. Fat also helps keep organs in place by surrounding them in a layer of fat. Fat also surrounds the body in a layer that preserves body temperature and keeps us warm. One other function of fat is to slow the production of hydrochloric acid thereby slowing down digestion and making food last longer. Some sources of fats are meats and nuts as well as just plain oils and fats. Proteins, besides water, are the most plentiful substance in the body. Protein is also one of the most important elements for the health of the body. Protein is the major source of building material in the body and is important in the development and growth of all body tissues. Protein is also needed for the formation of all hormones. It also helps regulate the bodys water balance. When proteins are digested they are broken down into simpler sections called amino acids. However, not all proteins will contain all the necessary amino acids. Most meat and dairy products contain all necessary amino acids in their proteins. Proteins are available from both

plants and animals. However, Animal proteins are more complete and thus

desirable. Knowledge of the nutrients and their function is essential to

understanding the importance of good nutrition. As mentioned above, there are

six nutrients. All vitamins are organic food substances that are found only in

living things, plants and animals. It is believed that there are about twenty

substances that are active as vitamins in human nutrition. Every vitamin is

essential to the proper growth and development of the body. With a few

exceptions, the body cannot make vitamins and must be supplied with them.

Vitamins contain no energy but are important as enzymes which help speed up

nearly all metabolic functions. Also, vitamins are not building components of

body tissues, but aid in the construction of these tissues. It is impossible to

reliably determine the vitamin requirements of an individual because of

differences in age, sex, body size, genetic makeup, and activity. A good source

of a recommendation is the RDA. The RDA makes its recommendations based on

studies of consumption of the given nutrient. On the recommendation it will

usually specify what size diet the recommendation is based on, for example, a

two thousand calorie per day diet. It is harmless to ingest excess of most

vitamins. However, some vitamins are toxic in large amounts. Vitamin A is a fat

soluble vitamin which is only available in two forms. Pre-formed, which is

found in animal tissue. The other is carotene, which can be converted into

Vitamin A by animals. Carotene is found in easily found in carrots as well as

other vegetables. Vitamin A is important to the growth and repair of body

tissues and helps maintain a smooth, soft, and disease free skin. It also helps

protect the mucus membranes of the mouth, nose, throat, and lungs which reduces

the chance of infection. Another function is helping mucus membranes combat the

effects of air pollutants. Vitamin A also protects the soft lining of all the

digestive tract. Another function of vitamin A is to aid in the secretion of

gastric juices. The B complex vitamins have many known sub-types, but they all

are water soluble vitamins. The B vitamins can be cultivated from a variety of

bacteria, yeast, fungi, or molds. They are active in the body by helping the

body convert carbohydrates into glucose, a form of sugar. B vitamins are also

vital in the metabolism of proteins and fats. They are also the single most

important element in the health of the nerves. B vitamins are also essential

for the maintenance of the gastrointestinal tract, the health of the skin, hair,

eyes, mouth, liver, and muscle tone. The intestine contains bacteria that

produce vitamin b but milk-free diets, and taking sulfonamides or antibiotics

can destroy these bacteria. Whole grains contain high concentrations of B

complex vitamins. Also, enriched bread and cereal products contain high

concentrations of B vitamins due to a governmental intervention of the whole

food group to ensure that the nation was getting enough B vitamins Vitamin C,

also known as ascorbic acid, is a water soluble vitamin. It is sensitive to

oxygen and is the least stable of all vitamins. One primary function of

vitamin C is to maintain collagen, a protein necessary for the formation of skin,

ligaments, and bones. Vitamin C also plays a role in healing of burns and

wounds because it aids the formation of scar tissue. It also helps form red

blood cells and prevents hemorrhaging. Another function is to prevent the

disease, scurvy, which used to be seen in sailors because of their lack of

vitamin C in their diet. This was corrected by issuing each sailor one lime per

day which supplied citric acid, a source of vitamin C. Other sources include

broccoli, Brussels sprouts, Strawberries, Oranges, and grapefruits. Vitamin E

is a fat soluble vitamin which is made up of a group of compounds called

tocoherols. There are seven forms of it but the form known as Alpha tocoherols

is the most potent. Tocoherols occur in the highest concentrations in cold

pressed vegetable oils, all whole raw seeds and nuts, and soybeans. Vitamin E

plays an essential role in cellular respiration of all muscles, especially the

cardiac and skeletal. It makes these muscles able to function with less oxygen,

thereby increasing efficiency and stamina. It also is an antioxidant, which

prevents oxidization. This prevents saturated fatty compounds from breaking

down and combining to form toxic compounds. Minerals are nutrients that exist

in the body and in organic and inorganic combinations. There are approximately

seventeen minerals that are necessary in human nutrition. Although only about

four or five percent of the body weight is mineral matter, minerals are

important to overall mental and physical health. All of the bodys tissues and

fluids contain some amount of mineral. Minerals are necessary for proper muscle

function and many other biological reactions in the body. Minerals are also

important in the production of hormones. Another important function of minerals

is to maintain the delicate water balance of the body and to regulate the bloods pH. Physical and emotional stress causes a strain on the bodys supply of minerals. A mineral deficiency often results in illness, which may be treated by the addition of the missing mineral to the diet. Calcium, a primary mineral, is available through dairy products. In order to get all the other minerals, one should eat protein rich foods, seeds, grains, nuts, greens, and limited amounts of salt or salty foods. Nutrition is just one aspect of total

body health. It is important to remember that on must compliment good nutrition

with good exercise and emotional health in order to achieve complete well being.

It is also important to remember that no one part of nutrition will completely

fulfill the bodys requirements for health.

1. a) Bulk movement is the overall movement of a fluid. The molecules all

move in the same direction. Diffusion however is the random movement of

molecules which usually results in a fairly even distribution. In other

words the movement is not guaranteed to move in one direction but the

Help with essay on Cell Membrane

probability that it will move in the lower gradient is greater. Osmosis is

similar to diffusion but is differentiated by the membranes behavior. The

cell membrane does allow water to move from higher to lower concentrations

but does not allow solutes do that. b) Water potential is the capacity of

water to move to a from a region where there is high water potential to low

water potential. This action happens without the affect of outside forces.

When outside actions due occur and they give water a high potential energy

than the water will move to the region where less potential energy is.

Hydrostatic pressure is the pressure required to stop water the movement of

water. This is a method of measurement. The osmotic potential is the

measure of tendency of water to move through a membrane which contains a

solution. This occurs when a cell does not allow a hypertonic solution to

leave the cell membrane. The cell begins to increase with water but the

cell membrane can not release the solution and thus the water potential

within the cell increases. This causes the water to no longer enter the

cell. c) Hypotonic is less solute to a certain amount of water. Hypertonic

is more solute to a certain amount of water. Isotonic is the equal amount

of solutes in two different solutions. d) Endocytosis is the inward bulge

causes by incoming molecules. Exocytosis is the expelling of a material

outside a cell. e) Phagocytosis is the process where the cell obtains

solid matter. This is different from the pinocytosis where the cell

obtains liquid matter. These both are endocytic processes.

Receptor-mediated endocytosis is the process where there are interactions

between a material and receptor sites on the cell. In this process the

cell accepts the material if it matches with the receptor sites. f) Coated

pits are areas which peripheral proteins indent the membrane. This is

where the vesicles for certain materials are formed. The vesicle which is

formed is called the coated vesicle. g) Plasmodesmata are the links

which hold two adjacent cells together. Gap junctions are the channels

which allow materials to flow between cells.

. The concentration gradient is the difference in the density of a

material from one region to another region. The concentration gradient

affects diffusion by allowing the substance to flow from high concentration

to low concentration. The concentration gradient affects osmosis by the

same manner it does in diffusion. The cell does not allow the solution to

exit the cell when water is entering. This keeps the solution in the cell

making the concentration high and thus no further penetration of water.

4. Diffusion is more rapid in gases because they are less dense than

liquids. They repel each other more resulting in faster diffusion.

Diffusion is greater at higher temperatures because of the greater kinetic

energy among the molecules. They push each other more making them less dense.

5. The concentration of the solute is 1%. This happens because a 1% sugar

solution is isotonic with that of the 1% sugar solution in the tubes. The

% sugar solution was increased because the substance was hypertonic. The

membrane did not allow the hypertonic solution to exit because the pressure

from the hypotonic solution was forcing water in. This later reached an

equilibrium when the hypertonic solution was gaining water potential and

the water stopped rising. The vice versa happened in the distilled water solution.

Why should a career choice be limited to one general field of study which could get tedious after many years of dealing with the same thing day in and day out? Or could a certain field appeal to more people by offering different sub-fields within that field? I have to come to realize that computer engineering can offer someone interested in this field an array of choices. This variety consists of, but isn't limited to, alternatives such as being a computer designer, hardware and software tester, an installer of computer components and computer systems, and in some cases, a software designer. However, computer engineering will not appeal to everyone; some are attracted to the money and others are attracted by their passion for dealing with computer related issues.

I am seeking a position in this field as a result of being a member of the stereotyped "strange" group of people who are attracted by the passion of dealing with various computer related issues. I do care about how much I make, but I really care about having a job that I will love. Computers have advanced so much within the last decade, and I've become fascinated with them since about th grade when a friend of mine invited me to his birthday party. There he had a group of people who had actually brought their computers and were playing video games through a local area network. I was astounded by how well the games looked. I had never seen D games with such good visual graphics and animations. I began talking to him about computers and he told me that he built them on his own and that he could show me how to build one of my own if I wanted. From there my interest in computers skyrocketed to become my number one hobby.

As with all careers though, they must allow you to make the money to support a family or whatever your preferred lifestyle is, whether it be spending great deals of money on expensive possessions or going on numerous excursions which cost tons of money. Computer engineering is a field that pays very well. Starting salaries consist of, from an average across America, anywhere from about $45,000 a year all the way up to around $110,000 a year. The computer engineering field's pay rates do depend on where exactly you live. Florida engineers on average get paid only about $40,000 to $0,000 annually.

Now that I've shown reasons for becoming a computer engineer as well as my reason for interest in the field, I will look at the different areas within the field that one can choose from. Being a computer engineer doesn't limit you to just doing the same old thing. Some areas seem more interesting to me than others and some seem more tedious and boring to me than others. However, it all comes down to personal preference.

Smack dab in the middle of California about halfway between San Francisco and Reno, Nevada is a little town called Sacramento. Along with an unusually high crime rate, Sacto is also home to a thriving music scene led by the one, the only, The Deftones.

Formed in the late eighties playing mostly cover tunes of bands like Danzig and Metallica, the Deftones started making up some of their own stuff, with a funk metal sound similar to Primus or Danzig(Biography. http//www.thedeftones.com/bio.shtml). They eventually developed the sound they have now; moody melodic vocals mixed with a thrashing, heavy music. The original line up included Chino Moreno, Stephen Carpenter, Abraham Cunningham, and bass player Dominic(Biography. http//sacto.cjb.net). The first Deftones line-up didnt include Chi Cheng. Dominic Garcia was their bass player. However, Abe left after about a year to play in a local band called Phallucy. So, Dominic moved to drums and Chi was recruited as the bassist. Soon though, Dominic left to join Phallucy also. John Taylor, a local musician, filled in on drums, but Abe returned after also doing a stint in a band called Drop Acid and Taylor was ousted(Deftones Facts). After a few jam sessions, Frank Delgado joined in for the ride, and the band has stayed the same ever since. Now with Chino screaming bloody murder, Frank on turntables, Abe bangin out beats, Chi rockin on the bass, and Stef ripping on the guitar; nothing can stop the Deftones from topping the charts.

According to Chino, this is how the Deftones began While we started out, I think Abe and I were about 16. We had been friends for years, even since Junior High School. And I had known Stephen also since I was 11-1 years old. But I knew Stephen from my neighborhood. And Abe from my school. I introduced him to Stephen. One day We took the Bus over there to his House. And he had a bunch of equipment in his Garage And they started playing together. It must have been maybe like three months later, I was talking to Abe at School, and he said, and Stephen wanted me to come down and try so sing. Just because we used to hang out. I didnt know how to sing or anything, but it was, just You know, maybe I was interested to try it, what ever. So I went. And it was pretty terrible in the beginning, but it was cool. We were all friends, trying to have a good time. I mean, we always had a good time doing it. Then probably about 6 months later, we got Chi in the band. And kind of started making songs. And everything was going pretty good( Deftones . Biography).

Now with a line-up in play, the Deftones just needed to find a sound, or did they? According to Chi the bass guitarist,Weve never talked about it, about finding a Deftones sound. We dont want to find a certain sound, and settling on a certain sound is not a good thing. I think thats why our albums keep progressing, because were going with what we feel is right at that moment, not what we think were supposed to do(Biography. http//www.thedeftones.com/bio.shtml). The Sacramento based band has built a massive reputation since the release of their first album Adrenaline in 16 of being an aggressive "new" metal band( Deftones . Biography). However, their style has shifted steadily from riff-based thrasher type songs to more melodic songs that find themselves being aggressive and strangely tender at the same time. This blend is very appealing, and very listener oriented.

The Deftones first explosive album, Adrenaline, as seen in the picture above, came on the scene in 5 and started an underground rumbling that reached its peak with the successful release of Around The Fur two years later. Adrenaline included a large number of notable, yet unrecognized tracks including 7 words. For the recording of 7 Words, Chino built a cave out of Styrofoam and fit it around the microphone so his screams had an echoed distortion to them(-DEFTONES FACTS-). Off of this album, the band recorded videos for 7 words and Bored. The video for Bored was shot inside Chinos home and includes all of his friends, as well as all the local bands jamming out to the Deftones performing(-DEFTONES FACTS-). Many wonder what the object on the cover of the Adrenaline album is. It is called an Aspirator and is used to suck out mucous from new born babies lungs and nostrils(-DEFTONES FACTS-).Producer Terry Date produces and captures the dynamics of the band in the studio without quelling the raw energy behind it, recording much of Adrenaline live(Biography. http//www.geocities.com/SunsetStrip/680/biog.htm).

ʏ

Following up in good taste, The Deftones unleashed their second album Around The Fur. The album, pictured above, debuted at number two on the billboard chart, and remained in the top ten for 15 weeks( Deftones . Biography). This grand slam made The Deftones an undeniable force driving the nu-metal genre. Along with Tool and Will Haven, the triple threat as I like to call them, The Deftones are quickly becoming a quick favorite in a lot of youths minds. On this Album, hits such as Feiticeira, My Own Summer, Be Quiet And Drive, and Headup, drive the album to a level past superstardom. According to Chino, The song Feiticeira is about a game show I read about in Brazil. If you win, you get to drink milk from the hosts navel. Somehow it evolved into a pretend scenario about being kidnapped(Biography. http//www.thedeftones.com/bio.shtml. 00 thedeftones.com). A notable track on the album called Headup is about the murder of Dana Wells, Chinos best friend, and how he never got to say bye to his boy. Its also a self confidence song and lashs out at the murderers of Dana(Deftones Discography). As well as a tribute, A very influential rock group named Soulfly gained their name from the breakdown section of Headup, in which Chino screams it repeatedly(-DEFTONES FACTS-). As for videos, The Deftones recorded, Be Quiet and Drive and My Own Summer. A video for the track Around The Fur was made but never released as it is supposed to be quite graphic, with nudity and loads of dark imagery(-DEFTONES FACTS-).

I see boundaries more clearly now than I used to. Im better at toying with people cerebrally than I was a few years ago. Im better at screwing with your head. - Chino Moreno(BIOGRAPHY (official)). After their second album, The Deftones went on tour with Orange mm and Downset, they had a skate area set up for them, but the person who used it most was Chino(-DEFTONES FACTS-). Skating is a very big part of The Deftones lives. Every single member is, or has at one time been a skater(-DEFTONES FACTS-). Because of this reason, a lot of young kids that look up to pro skaters like Tony Hawk also look up to The Deftones seeing that they have the same tastes and interests.

"A lot of inspiration comes from family and friends," says Chi(Biography. http//sacto.cjb.net) The Deftones are very family oriented and have seem to show a lot of love toward human compassion and a higher power. Chino sees inspiration as a great thing, everyone needs a little, "I get letters from kids talking about how a certain song affected them or comforted them. Their idea of what it means is completely different from what I was feeling, but I would never tell them that. If something affects you at all, its good"(-DEFTONES FACTS-).

Pictured above is the third album to be released by The Deftones. Entitled "White Pony," it has gotten the most attention, based on there previous fame. The mood on this album is a step in a different direction as compared to the last two. White Pony is very dark and poetic. Lyrics that have a resemblance to ramblings, placed on heavy drowning guitar beats make this album a winner, but in a gothic way. Tool front man Maynard James Keenan co-wrote and volleys vocals with Chino on "Passenger"(Deftones Discography). The track is about being the passenger in a car with a girl who is taking you around the world, literally, sexually, in a whirlwind of time(Deftones Discography). I can barely tell where I end and Maynard begins, says Chino about the end result of the song(Biography. http//www.thedeftones.com/bio.shtml). About the poetic nature of the songs, Chi says, "Whats good about listening to a song and knowing exactly -- to the word -- what the singer is talking about? Its like a good painting or a good book. I never ask Chino what something means, I want to know what it means to me"(Biography. http//www.thedeftones.com/bio.shtml)

The Deftones are expanding. "I think that one of the best things we have going for us is our dynamics. Theres never too much of anything. Its not like theres a real heavy song and then a real soft song. Each of our songs contain many different levels," says front man Chino Moreno(BIOGRAPHY (official)). Aside from The Deftones, members of the band are branching off and doing their own thing. Deftones side projects include Team Sleep, Phallucy, and the Kush Project(Deftones Side Projects). Team Sleep is Chino's project but he incorporates all of his team mates into at least one of his songs, such as Abe playing percussion on a track called "Tired." The core of Team Sleep is Chino Moreno, DJ Crook, and Chinos childhood friend, guitarist Todd Wilkenson (Deftones Side Projects). Phallucy is a group focused around Abe, the drummer, and Kush project is based off of Stef, the guitar player(Deftones Side Projects). Both bands incorporate others into their bands though.

The Deftones are on the march, and nothing can stop them now. On tour they can light up the stage and in the studio they produce hits. There sound is nothing short of a complete aural rush. Better check your pulse.

There are many meanings associated with multiculturalism. The simplest of definitions is found in any standard dictionary. The actual word means many cultures, yet there is no universal definition of this concept. I am going to present the meaning that in my judgment is most suitable to the Canadian experience. Multiculturalism is a policy aimed at promoting the interaction of people from various cultures in Canada to increase mutual respect for one another as well as provide for equal rights and opportunities.1 the concept of multiculturalism entails a wide variety of issues.

Multiculturalism has and continues to impact Canadas social, economic, political and religious structures. I have decided to focus mostly on the educational and employment aspects, since I feel these to be the strongest qualifications for overall life chances of any individual. Although the ideal meaning of multiculturalism sounds to be very "fair", many struggles had to be fought and are still being fought today. Attitudes and policies of everyone involved have been in constant assessment; policies have been progressively adjusted to attempt to suit the needs of everyone. I will attempt to convince the reader that even though multiculturalism has gone through some positive changes, the social inequality rooted in the fabric of multiculturalism has continued its legacy to the present day

Historically, Canada was considered a bi-cultural society, up until the late 1800s. At the time of Confederation Canada was mostly made up of people of French and British origins. Thats not to say that people of other ethnic origins were not present in Canada at that time. Simply there was very little regard or concern given to the needs of any minorities. The beginning example would have to be the treatment of the indigenous peoples of Canada. The disregard for multiculturalism is evident in the treatment of this particular group in relation to the personal and land restrictions set forth by the British settlers. Policies aimed at the indigenous included the prohibition of any land ownership, restrictions on use of the native dialects, wiping certain traditions and eventual total genocide of certain indigenous groups. With no regards to those who preceded the French and British settlers, the consensus of 181 included only classification by British, French and "other" origin. People of diverse ethnic origins entered North America during the 18th and 1th centuries. These diverse groups made the larger numbers of fisherman, farmers, merchants, traders, soldiers, slaves and fugitives. Immigration in post-Confederation Canada became a major issue when hundreds of thousands of immigrants arrived following an economic policy set up by Sir Clifford Sifton to attract agriculturists to Canada.

By 110, problems began to arise when it came to the ability to assimilate certain groups. The 11 Immigration Act demanded tighter immigration control. It allowed the government to prohibit individuals or entire nationalities from entering Canada. It became painfully obvious that Canadas government was only interested in expansion at any cost. Great numbers of those who along with the French and the British, built Canada and contributed to its economy were prohibited to prosper from their labor. This is most disturbing in the case of the African slaves who were kidnapped from their land of origin, force to work without wages and resided in sub-human living conditions. These conditions were made lawful and even encouraged by the government, the people and the church. Canadas inhumane tactics were once again revealed in the countrys treatment of the Chinese immigrants. During the building of the Canadian Pacific Railway, many Chinese males were encouraged to immigrate to Canada. The Chinese experienced in Canada included harsh living conditions, pitiful wages and absolutely no respect from the government. After the railway was build, those who survived were either deported or faced blunt racial hatred from the Canadian government and its people. Since their labor was no longer needed, the government implemented various policies that would stop or at least discourage Chinese immigration into Canada. A head tax was imposed on every Chinese person who crossed the border. The fees became so high that it was almost impossible to afford.

Sunday morning, December 7, 141, the nation was enjoying another peaceful morning when suddenly Japanese forces attacked Pearl Harbor without notice. The Japanese military had great success in crippling one of the greatest military forces of all time, the United States of America. An attack of that magnitude against such a strong military giant required careful planning and timing. It made a significant impact on the American military presence and action.

As on most ships on any peacetime Sunday morning in port, holiday routine was being observed. With the exception of those on watch and a few late sleepers from the midwatch, the crew was at breakfast. They watched as the Japanese Kates and Vals and Zeros flew past on their way to the main anchorage at Pearl Harbor, less than two miles away. At the same time, other groups of attacking aircraft were already pouncing on their primary targets-the battleships and other helpless vessels at anchor. (Lee 58+)

Early that Sunday morning the U.S. Secretary of State met with two Japanese diplomats to discuss a peace settlement. Meanwhile the Japanese military had already launched a surprise attack on the base. The Japanese planes attacked the U.S. Pacific Fleet anchored in the harbor while simultaneously attacking the Hickam and Wheeler airfields. Ironically, the planes were detected by a U.S. Army radar operator but the officer to whom he reported the discovery said the aircraft were friendly. A survivor describes what he seen

When we looked east, we saw a thick column of black smoke billowing up from Pearl Harbor. The explosions grew in intensity and frequency, and we could see airplanes flying in circles…. The aircraft dropped below treetop level at the Waipio peninsula and skimmed over the water toward our quarters, located on a bluff overlooking the bay at the western end of the harbor. We stood on the porch, watching as the plane raced toward us with its guns firing. This was no war game. The aircraft bore straight on, and there was no mistaking its intent, it was strafing us. As it got closer, I strained to see the crew members- the men who were trying to kill us- but there wasnt time to stand around. We huddled on the cement steps of our quarters, trying to make smaller targets of ourselves as we crawled in through the door. The planes erratic maneuvers caused it to veer slightly off course. It missed us and roared close over the roof of the house, guns still firing. (Lee 58+)

Help with essay on THE ATTACK ON PEARL HARBOR

For Japan, the bombing was a stunning victory. The Japanese navy crippled the entire U.S. Pacific fleet in little over an hour and a half without even loosing more than thirty of their own planes. Although, the Japanese later realized that the attack was actually worse for them than it was for America because it propelled enraged Americans to arms. The Japanese soon realized that they had more trouble coming their way than what they had caused.

Japans Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto led the attack against the United States. His naval force hid under the cover of darkness about two hundred miles north of Oahu, an island off of Hawaii (Reid 1). Yamamotos strike force consisted of over three hundred and sixty planes that were launched from six different aircraft carriers along with thirty-three other Japanese naval ships (Reid 1). According to Yamamotos plan, the five Type-A-class midget submarines were to launch from their mother submarines in the early hours of Sunday morning. They were then to go from their launch areas to Pearl Harbor before the aerial strike. Each midget would enter the narrow and shallow channel and pass under the antitorpedo nets that hung down to a depth of thirty-five feet. Once inside the harbor, the midgets would wait for the airial attack to begin; then they would fire their torpedoes against targets of opportunity as the attack unfolded. The first wave of Japanese aircraft, which were launched at around six o'clock in the morning, was made up of one hundred and eighty dive-bombers, level bombers, torpedo planes, and fighter planes (Elting 48). The first bomber was followed by over one hundred and eighty Japanese warplanes all of which were ready and willing to destroy. Their mission was clear, to hit quickly, effectively and deadly.

Although the attack only took a little over an hour and a half there were two different waves of attacks. The first wave started around 755 in the morning which consisted of dive-bombers at the airfields, torpedo planes and warplanes at the harbor, and were followed by heavy bombers. The planes soon retreated leaving Americans thinking that it was all over, when all of the sudden the second wave hit not long after. The second wave started at around 840 a.m. and it contained one hundred and eighty planes. Its pattern was the same as the first except for there were no torpedo planes. For over an hour and a half the Japanese were barely disturbed by American antiaircraft guns, but by the second wave, American guns were firing which brought down the only Japanese aircraft lost by gunfire. A survivor describes what he saw

The planes machine guns made a peculiar sound, a sort of high pitched popping and whistling combination as the propeller and engine noised mixed with those of the bullets passing out of the gun muzzles. There was doubt in our minds that the pilot was distracted from his strafing run by the accurate gunfire from an American ship docked at West Loch…. As more and more American sailors manned anti-aircraft guns, the sky filled with the round black puffs of three and five inch projectiles. The shells bursting close by sounded like gigantic firecrackers going off inside a hallow steel drum. Hot shrapnel and spent bullets rained down on our house and lawn. (Lee 58+)

The attack, only a little over an hour old, was over by nine fifteen and by one oclock in the afternoon all remaining Japanese warplanes and all surviving crew had returned to their carriers. The major targets were the eight American battleships anchored along with over one hundred and eighty other American vessels in the harbor that were untouched by enemy fire. Their targets were clear and their shots were sure. The mission was to destroy the major firepower of the United States Navy and Air Force.

During the war, teenage boys were put to work on some battleships doing odd jobs such as repairing things to even helping with the ammunition. Their work may have been small but the crewmembers greatly appreciated the extra help. During the attack a sixteen-year-old boy named John Garcia was working on the U.S.S. Shaw as an extra hand and he describes his experience as follows

It was a mess. I was working on the U.S.S. Shaw. It was on a floating dry dock. It was in flames. I started to go down to the pipe fitters shop to get my toolbox when another wave of Japanese came in. I got under a set of concrete steps at the dry dock where the battleship Pennsylvania was. An officer came by and asked me to go into the Pennsylvania and try to get the fires out. A bomb had penetrated the marine deck, and… three decks below. Under that was the magazines ammunition, powder, shells. I said "There ain't [sic] no way I'm gonna go down there. It could blow up any minute." I was young and sixteen, not stupid. ("Japan Attacks the U.S." 74)

The U.S. military suffered many damages from the attack. Over fifty-one U.S. naval ships were damaged or sunk eight battleships, nine cruisers, twenty-nine destroyers, and five submarines. Amazingly out of all of the damaged ships only one ship was totally lost, the twenty-six year old battleship Arizona. The other two battleships, the California and the West Virginia that were heavily damaged and sunk, were salvaged and returned to active service. The battleship Oklahoma was also severely damaged along with nine other naval ships. These were also repaired and returned to active service; however, the battleship Oklahoma was raised but not repaired. The Japanese also destroyed eighty naval aircraft and ninety-seven army planes that were not even in the air. Only four U.S. aircraft were able to get off the ground and they were soon shot down by enemy fire. Japanese fighters strafed the army planes so tightly that they were not able to get any more off the ground. Although the Japanese damaged many American vessels they too had some losses. By the second wave, American guns were finding targets and were able to shoot down twenty-nine planes killing fifty-five officers. An eyewitness describes what he saw

…we did see one Japanese fighter plunging downward into the largest concentration of smoke. The plane was consumed in bright, orange-yellow flames nearly twice the length of the fuselage… (Lee 58+)

The surprise attack also took many lives and injured many people. There were over two thousand four hundred soldiers killed and there were over one thousand one hundred and seventy eight wounded ("Japan Attacks the U.S." 74). There were also eighty-three innocent civilians injured and there were forty-nine killed (Encyclopedia Americana 581). Had the American forces taken action at the first signs of trouble the results may have not been as tragic. Unfortunatly, lives were lost because of a slack in our defensive strategies.

After the attack, several investigations were held to see who was responsible for not being alert in the case of an emergency. Although they were not convicted, Admiral Kimmel and Lt. Short were criticized for the U.S. losses. Many wanted the finger of blame to fall upon an individual but the real responsibility lies within an overconfident military who thought nothing in that magnitude could ever happen to them, especially in their own country. At that time in our nation, we were settled in our military might believing that we were invincible and our attention was suddenly shaken with the frightening reality that we were not. A survivor of the attack describes how he felt

The strange new sound of being shot at soon became a familiar one that I will never forget. (Lee 58+)

As a result of this tragedy the United States as a nation, realized that they are not exempt from military strikes against their own country. This attack made America look back at its own self-defense and made them realize that it was time to make changes. American forces had to upgrade their awareness level with new instructions and new equipment to bring us back to full alert. During the many hours and days of clean up Americans were reminded of the tragic loss of many lives including many non military forces. There is now a memorial, in the harbor, where the battleship Arizona was lost to remind people of what can happen when an entire nation is unprepared. . This strategic surprise attack on America's largest Pacific naval base truly became a day of infamy.

This poem seemingly has different interpretations according to its appeal to the reader. It strikes the reader not with logic or understanding but with emotion that we could relate to. Frustration. Sadness. Grief. Sorrow. All these add up to what we feel when we lose someone. Either by death or by love, these emotions are a common ground that produces pain in a human being. When we look more closely in the first line, we can see that 'closed' and 'close' mean different things. The 'closed' she was referring to was her past experiences, her loss, her pain and the second 'close' was about herself. That she was literally closing her life to everything. We don't know what caused that pain. Maybe she loved someone and was rejected. Maybe she lost her husband, her child, or herself. No one knows, but one thing is certain. That experience is so sharp and so intense that she begins to question life's end. What happens after death? Is there true immortality? Then she compares all her what if's to the two pains in her life (as these that twice befell). And that is when she became hopeless to everything, loosing focus and understanding. The last two lines of her poem would be quite hard to understand. That's why we have to phase out, heaven and hell first. Parting is all we know. Parting is all we need. What do we know, and what do we need? Of course we need to part basically because it's right. It needs to be for the right reasons. But in return, it's like hell, full of suffering and hurt. And next, what do we know about parting? Simple. Even though parting is painful, we have this inkling to fight and live. We know that we have to keep our head up because there is a reason. That life isn't always that bad, we need to look beyond life's hells and begin to accept its heavens. That our beautiful memories, the goodness of life, the persons we love that are still here and the God that makes this bumpy life a joy ride are the main reasons why we still need to wake up every morning of our life.

MARKETING ASSIGNMENT 1

Q1. Explain what is meant by the marketing concept and illustrate your answer by using an example of a market led organisation.

A. The marketing concept is about matching a company's capabilities, with the wants and needs of the customer. The marketing concept is used by organisations in an attempt to satisfy this need. Marketing facilitates an exchange which satisfies the relationship between seller and buyer.

Money, Credit, Donations

Goods and Services

A need is a basic requirement that has to be satisfied. Examples of basic needs are food and drink. One good example of an organisation that takes advantage of one of these basic needs is Coca Cola.

Coca Cola use peoples' thirst as a way of selling their products. One way that Coca Cola were led by market demand was that people became increasingly aware of the detrimental effects of sugary products and they are deemed to be unhealthy and fattening, Coca Cola addressed the situation with the launch of Diet Coke.

Q. Compare and contrast the selling and marketing philosophies using company examples of your choice.

The main comparison between marketing and selling is the exchange relationship. The marketing philosophy aims at fulfilling consumers' needs and meeting organizational objectives. The selling philosophy emphasizes aggressive selling techniques.

By using a selling philosophy it is believed that consumers will not buy enough of a product if left alone to do so, therefore the organisation will undertake an aggressive selling and promotion effort in order to coax the consumer into making a purchase. An example of companies that uses this approach would be those who supply double glazing. Very often they use 'cold calling' as a method of selling. Definition of 'cold calling' is calling a customer without prior appointment.

Starting Focus Means Ends

Point

By using a marketing philosophy the provider believes the key to achieving success lies in giving the customer what they want by focusing on the needs of the customer and satisfying that need.

An example of companies that use the marketing philosophy would be the car manufacturers, in particular BMW. They target a specific type of consumer. They achieve success in retaining customers as there is evidence to suggest that a consumer will stay with a particular make of car throughout their lifetime.

Q. What is the marketing mix and explain why it is so important to marketers?

The marketing mix is made up of the 4 p's. These are PRICE, PLACE, PROMOTION, and PRODUCT. Increasingly this has been expanded to a 5th p, PEOPLE. It provides an organisation with a decision making method on how to manage a customer relationship.

The variables with these five principles need to be right in order to achieve the maximum marketing opportunities for an organisation, which is why they are so important to marketers.

Any organisation that wishes to satisfy the wants and needs of the people in their target market need to develop a marketing mix to ensure the balance of the variables are suitable.

An extreme example of why the marketing mix is so important can be illustrated in the following way-

There would be little point for one of the major electrical retailers to open a chain of stores in a third world/developing country. The reason for this is that it is likely that most of the population would not be able to afford to pay (PRICE) for any of the goods available. Electricity is not readily available in developing countries (PLACE). It would be difficult for an organisation to promote their goods to the public since there is a lack of suitable advertising media such as television or radio and the majority of the population would not have access to them, (PROMOTION). People in developing countries spend all their time concentrating on basic needs like food and shelter. Electrical goods would be classified more as a want and therefore the (PRODUCT) is unsuitable for the market.

Conclusion to the marketers within the organisation is that this would not be an opportunity to market.

Q4. What is a marketing audit and the key elements contained within it?

A marketing audit is an analysis of an organisations, objectives, strategies and activities. A marketing audit is conducted to enable the organisation to identify problem areas and from this develop a marketing plan.

The key elements contained in a marketing environment analysis area as follows-

A Macro Marketing Environment.

A macro marketing environment concerns itself with the external factors which can impact the organisation. These external factors are Social, Legal, Economic, Political and Technological. SLEPT. Examples of what would be examined in each of these factors are as follows

Social Demographics, Legal - Competition Law, Economic Inflation, Political Monopolies, Technological E-business.

A Micro Marketing Environment.

A micro marketing environment focuses on the forces specific the nature of the organizations' business. This would consist of, buyers, suppliers, competitors, marketing intermediaries, publics and the business.

A SWOT Analysis would encompass both external and internal factors taken into account when performing a marketing audit.

SWOT is made up from strengths and weaknesses which are internal influencing factors and Opportunities and Threats which are the external influencing factors.

Q5. What is the purpose of the Marketing Plan?

The purpose of a marketing plan is to allow an organisation to react to the internal and external forces which impact them. A marketing plan helps to establish, direct and co-ordinate an organizations marketing efforts. By having a marketing plan it forces an organisation to assess what is going on in the market place and how it affects the business. It will also provide a benchmark.

The benefits of having a marketing plan are control, co-ordination and development of the marketing activity. Control ensures that targets are met and provides a warning sign if things start going wrong which in turn gives the organisation the opportunity to rectify the situations. Co-ordination specifies what is expected and communicates this to staff. Development of a marketing plan analyses the macro and micro environments which will highlight the strengths and weaknesses of the organisation. This will help to identify the options available and allocate resource.

Q6. What is customer segmentation? Give four examples of how marketers segment their targets.

Customer segmentation is the selection of groups of people who will be most receptive to a product. By using segmentation a company can identify target customer groups.

Examples of segmentation-

1. Demographics age, sex, race, religion, occupation, family.

. Geographic country, region, climate, type of urban area and type of housing.

. Socio- Economics income, occupation, education and social class.

4. Lifestyle interests, activities, opinions.

Q7. For a company of your choice define its target audience in terms of how it has segmented the market, state its targeting strategy and define where it is positioned on the perceptual map.

The company chosen for the question above is John Lewis. John Lewis has segmented the market place in a number of ways.

1. Demographically by age, gender, income, family life cycle.

. Geographically by geography.

. Lifestyle by opinions and interests.

This would lead me to believe that their target market is female, age 0 plus, middle class income, with a family home to run.

John Lewis, tend to have department stores in the major cities, i.e. Southampton.

They provide a range of goods from clothes and food to luxury items, thus opinion tends to be that they are a high quality provider of goods. Pricing is a major factor as they can be considered expensive when compared with Asda, who provide food as a main selling point, however they have become increasingly diverse with the addition of clothing and household goods to their repertoire. Asda, however are viewed as 'value for money'.

PERCEPTUAL MAP

Q8. Describe the components of Maslow's hierarchy of needs and provide examples of modern day products that reflect each level.

Maslow's Hierachy of Needs helps us understand human motivation. The bottom of the pyramid shows our most basic needs. Only when the lower part of the pyramid has been satisfied are we concerned with the higher needs.

Physiological Needs- air, food, drink, shelter, warmth, sex, sleep.

Safety Needs- protection from elements, security, order, law, limits, stability.

Social Needs-family, affection, relationships, hygiene

Esteem Needs- achievement, independence, status, prestige

Self Actualisation Needs- realising potential, fulfillment

Examples of modern day products which reflect these needs are-

Physiological Pizza Hut. Provide food which is a physiological need.

Safety Royal Sun & Alliance. Provision of a range of insurance, e.g. Medical, Life Assurance.

Social Johnson & Johnson. Provision of hygiene products, e.g. talcum powder.

Esteem Estee Lauder. Provision of cosmetics, e.g. mascara

Self-Actualisation Southampton Institute. Provision of further education e.g., students obtaining higher education certificates.

Social Investment in grower's community; protection of the environment; responsible neighbour and active contributor of surrounding community; commitment to treat all with respect.

Legal Data Protection Act; Health and Safety at Work; Environmental Health Policy.

Economic Exchange rate fluctuations; price of coffee; disease of crop, crop failure; inflation; seasonal (more people at the shops around Christmas time)

Political Fair-trade for farmers policy; provision of credit to farmers; conservation promotion.

Technological Informational website; wireless shops in some locations;

The internal and external factors influencing Starbucks using a SWOT analysis.

Strengths internal micro analysis

Large global organisation; high quality products; good company to work for; attempts to produce social, economic and environmental benefits for the communities affected by them; wide range of products available;

Weaknesses internal micro analysis

Customer trend towards low caffeine, low sugar, low fat diet; high costs; shops tend to be small, can get over-crowded; new wireless technology could impact customer turnover as people will stay in the shop longer but not necessarily buy more;

Opportunities external macro analysis

To expand further, acquire more shops in more places; expand range of products; diversify into on-line merchandising; by investing in farmers able to lower the cost of coffee;

Threats external macro analysis

Competition from other providers; disease of crop, crop failure; rise in inflation, customers less likely to be shopping;

My Operating Definition of "Organizational Behavior"

I define Organizational Behavior (OB) as the ability to see the complete picture and at the precise moment those factors leading up to that particular point in time. The complete picture could be based on an individual or a group. More specifically I identify organizational behavior as the ability to recognize why people work, respond, or react the way they do. It is the answer to these actions that is based on culture, education, gender, work/life experience, and even birth order. These reactions can also vary depending on whether the individual is alone or in a group.

It is my understanding that organizational behavior instructs us not to analyze someone on their first reaction, the tone of their voice or the look on their face. It motivates us into taking interest in the issues that lead up to the response we perceive. An example is A co-worker has passes me in the hall, I say hello, yet his eyes are downcast, the look on his face is one of irritation, he disregards me and he is murmuring something to himself. Upon my initial reaction I can decode what he is experiencing as possibly one of four situations. 1. I can assume he is upset with me, or there is something I have or have not done. . There might be trouble with his work or a project not running smoothly. Maybe his customer has pulled a change-order at his expense. . It could be he is experiencing personal problems. His kids may be in trouble, or perhaps his wife is upset with him. There could possibly be an easier explanation. 4. It may simply be that someone who came across his path seconds before I did upset him.

In conclusion, whatever the co-workers reasons may be, "OB" gives us the skills to look deeper into why people act the way they do, or don't do. We as managers must take into account all of the different variables that make up individuals and accommodate each and every one. It is the practice of the past to force a round ball into a square hole. Managers must break away from conforming workers into idealistic squares.

Dennis and Andrew Smith have a special relationship in addition to their father/son relationship. They create masterpieces together. Dennis began as a sculptor generally crafting structures that resembled flying machines. His work focuses on the poetry of life. He has said, "Your art is a poetic expression of your anxiety or ecstasy." Andrew's many abilities with moving parts have enabled the structures to "come to life"; he adds the kinetics. "I like to incorporate moving elements into my sculptures, something that will draw people in and wonder how it works" (1). They sometimes work alone, and they sometimes combine their styles to generate a new style of assemblage art.

The art piece entitled "Portal" was the center-piece of the Poetic Kinetics exhibit. It, therefore, caught my attention from the very beginning. The piece was created using what most of us would label "trash". Cranes, chains, metal tracks, and balls were all colored brightly to create an effect of being transported to a new place. It reached the desired effect. I was in awe as I followed the path of the balls by walking around and under the assemblage. Everyone who viewed this piece had the opportunity of gleaning something from it. The continual movement and the large variety of objects, I believe, enabled all viewers to receive the piece on a personal level. Everyone from small children to adults could feel an interaction with certain elements. As I attended the exhibit, I observed an elderly couple watching "Portal" with incredible interest. The woman continually pointed to the balls and said "Look." The man simply sat quietly and smiled. The real essence of "Portal" is its ability to appeal to all audiences.

In addition to the entertainment value of "Portal", the art captured Dennis Smith's idea of poetry in art. There seemed to be a story involved somehow in the piece the story of childhood. The artists portrayed their expressions of the playfulness of life and the journey that we all took growing up. They captured the essence of what it means to be a kid tumbling around through life's situations and having fun doing it.

My imagination and creative right brain were both satisfied while viewing this exhibit. I must admit that at my first view of the room containing "Poetic Kinetics" I was rather cynical; all I saw was junk. However, after just a few minutes of looking around, I decided that this junk was rather "cool". Although "Portal" was my favorite piece, I also enjoyed some of the flying machines. I was enchanted by the bright colored objects. "Portal" contained a yellow typewriter. This object really interested me because it seemed so out of place despite the fact that all the objects were random. Some objects seemed to fit more than others. The bells, for example, seemed to fit perfectly. They added noise to the contraptions when the balls came blundering by. Clothespins added more noise. The various sounds present really made me feel as if I was participating in the art instead of just viewing.

Perhaps even greater than my enjoyment of the color and sound, was my love for the movement. This element was the real trigger to my fascination. I laughed with delight as I saw a ball that seemed to be flying aimlessly through the air, land directly back onto the track and continue its course. Every once in a while I would lose the trail of a certain ball while trying to watch two or three balls at once. I felt a sort of relief when I found "my" ball again. I found myself walking underneath and around "Portal" trying to find exactly how the machine worked, thus fulfilling the artist's desired effect. The variety of color, noise, poetry, and kinetics combined to form an assemblage that transported the observer to a world of playfulness and childhood.
