Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, also known as ADHD is a very common learning disability. Many kids and adults have this disability. It cannot be cured permanently; it will go on your whole life starting as a baby. ADHD is the most commonly diagnosed learning disability in children.

ADHD affects to 5 percent of school-age children. On average, about one child in every classroom in the United States has this disorder and needs help. In every classroom there is about two more that are for the most part controlling their disorder either with drugs or naturally.

There are many symptoms of ADHD. Usually a person with this disorder has many of these symptoms

¤ Loud always on the go, take risks, engage in dangerous behavior, and talk back to adults

Cheap Custom Essays on ADHD

¤ Always on the go

¤ Take risks

¤ Engage in dangerous behavior

¤ Talk back to adults

v

¤ Quiet daydreamers

¤ Lose personal belongings

¤ Can't work alone

¤ Don't finish tasks

¤ Often lost in their own thoughts

Those are some of the symptoms in more detail. If you were to generalize all the symptoms they would break down into three categories

¤ Inattention. People who are inattentive have a hard time keeping their mind on one thing and may get bored with a task after only a few minutes. Focusing conscious, deliberate attention to organizing and completing routine tasks may be difficult.

¤ Hyperactivity. People who are hyperactive always seem to be in motion. They cant sit still; they may dash around or talk incessantly. Sitting still through a lesson can be an impossible task. They may roam around the room, squirm in their seats, wiggle their feet, touch everything, or noisily tap a pencil. They may also feel intensely restless.

¤ Impulsivity. People, who are overly impulsive, seem unable to curb their immediate reactions or think before they act. As a result, they may blurt out answers to questions or inappropriate comments, or run into the street without looking. Their impulsivity may make it hard for them to wait for things they want or to take their turn in games. They may grab a toy from another child or hit when they are upset.

Many people over use Ritalin and other drugs of its kind. In some cases a child that speaks out in class or goofs around is automatically given Ritalin or another drug of similar performance without any other research done on their activity. In most cases this would be considered acting like a kid. And it is no reason to put a child on drugs, but that is what is happening.

Although ADHD is considered a disorder it is not all bad. Many people with ADHD attribute their creativity, energy, and exciting unpredictability directly to the ADHD.

There is no permanent cure for ADHD. But there are many ways that are said to 'help' an ADHDer with their disorder. There are drugs such as Ritalin and there are natural ways such as controlling diet. Drugs can work sometimes but in % of know uses the drugs damage the people more than before. They can make you more hyper, depressed or make you become more easily addicted to it and other drugs. Natural remedies have been proven in many ways to be more effective. Natural remedies will not hurt your body in any way. By controlling your diet you can control your activity harmlessly.

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder is a learning disability. It affects many people of all ages. It can be treated many ways. Naturally is safer to your body. You can learn to control it, although it can never be permanently cured. "Be Calm'd" help with controlling disorder

THE BASIC ANNALS OF EMPEROR WUDI

After ages of endless war and strife, the Han Dynasty took rest under the administrations of Han Wendi and Han Jingdi. Such solace soon disappeared after Liu Che, sixth sucessor of the Western Han Dynasty, ascended the throne at age 15. This boy became Emperor Wudi, the Martial Emperor.

As fierce and as bold as the warrior Hsiang Yu, Wudi dedicated his reign to the suppression of the Huns. The Emperor unleashed three waves of attack on the tribe, driving them far north at Gobi. To hold the enemy at bay, Wudi ordered the construction of a new Great Wall, much more imposing than that of the Qin Dynasty. And the former barrier was renovated still.

Before the victory, Han Wudi sent out his trusted general Zhang Qian to propose an allegiance with the Yuezhi Tribe against the Huns. After a thirteen year odyssey of capture and escape, exploration and discovery, Zhang Qian finally returned. The trail that he blazed would become known as the Silk Road, a path which led to a Chinese cultural and economic flourishment.

Do my essay on A RECORD OF THE HISTORIAN: THE BIOGRAPHY OF SIMA QIAN CHEAP !

Emperor Wudi established the teachings of Confucius as law, and simultaneously banished all opposing literature. As a ruler, cunning strategies fulfilled his grand ambitions. Upon dying in 86 B.C., he was renamed Emperor Shizong. The Han Dynasty would fall less than 100 years later.

THE BIOGRAPHY OF LI LING

Li Ling lived noblely as a General to Emperor Wudi and as a son to his

parents. He was as fearless a warrior and as trustworthy a friend as the fabled Li Kuang.

The Sixth Emperor ordered Li Ling to lead an assault on the Huns. The

General pleaded with his majesty to reconsider his strategy, for the enemy

would greatly outnumber them. But Wudi refused to make concessions. Li Ling

bowed and prepared for sacrafice. The General gathered 5,000 troops and set out for Northern China.

When initial news of the battle returned, the Emperor's men rejoiced. All Lords and Ministers praised Li Ling for his heroic plunge into the enemy's forces. The General had driven his troops to the lion's den and called out the beast. The Huns could not match such bold and fearless will. However, the struggle would last for 10 days, and the tides of fortune are always turning.

The second report did not bode well. General Li Ling and his soldiers found themselves encircled by the entire Hun tribe, and yet they continued to fight on in desparation. Only in the final moment, facing no other choice but death, did the General surrender.

As the Emperor scowled at this account, the same Lords and Ministers who applauded Li Ling only days before, now changed their tune. To appease their ruler, the men placed blame solely on the General, calling him Traitor. Is this justice? The moon may eclipse the sun for a moment, but only blocking its radiance, never really dimming it. It is true that other men of honor may have chosen exile or suicide, but should that be the fate of a man of such worth as Li Ling?

A RECORD OF THE HISTORIAN THE BIOGRAPHY OF SIMA QIAN

When General Li Ling surrendered to the Huns, many men were quick to

condemn him. It was only when Emperor Wudi called for the counsel of Sima

Qian that a voice of reason emerged. Although they had never shared company,

the Historian long admired the selfless will of Li Ling. While the others took

advantage of fueling the Emperor's anger, Sima Qian tried to broaden the ruler's

perspective. Li Ling was not a coward or a traitor, he was a sublime warrior and

leader of men who found himself backed up against the Great Wall. This was not

been what Han Wudi wanted to hear, but it was the truth. The

Historian is quoted

"Though bitter, good medicine cures illness. Though it may hurt, loyal criticism will have beneficial effects."

But this time, Sima Qian's ideals would not yeild any such benefits. The Lords and Ministers twisted the meaning of his plea, and he was soon imprisoned for "treason and conspiracy". The Historian was lead into the Silkworm Chamber to face the palace punishment Castration.

This sentence was meant to inspire suicide; Sima Qian was expected to choose death rather than exist as a disgraced eunuch. But his will was strong and the Historian had a legacy to carry out . And so he made the sacrafice.

Several lonely years later, Sima Qian explains his choice in a letter to fellow government official Ren An

"I have heard it said that to devote oneself to moral training is the sign of wisdom; to delight in giving to others is the beginning of humanity; that proper giving and taking are the marks of a person's sense of duty; that times of shame and disgrace determine one's courage; and that making a name for oneself is the end of all action."

Though Sima Qian would no longer be able to further his father's name in heritage, he meant to continue his work. Sima Tan was a Historian as well, the Prefect of the Grand Scribes, a reader of the stars and supervisor of the Imperial Library. On his deathbed, Sima Tan passed that post onto his son and passionatley requested that he continue the Shiji, or Historical Records, which would recount the lineage of Chinese heros back to the Yellow Emperor. Sima Qian was willing to fulfill that wish at any cost.

For three years after his fathers death, the Historian traveled far and wide, collecting materials for the project. Once he officially inherited the office of his father, Sima Qian used the imperial resources to authenticate his findings. The Historian strayed from his friends and family so that he could devote himself entirely to his mission. Over 1 years, Sima Qian composed more than 10 chapters. Today, he is recognized as the first biographer.

The theme of filial piety so dear to Sima Qian would appear time and again in his biographies. We find heros fighting in the name of the father throughout the ages of the Shiji. To the Historian, the family was the basic root of the Great Will which all heros possessed. This motivation gave him the strength to endure the pain and humiliation of castration.

Forbearance. The art of restraint and tolerance. Sima Qian wrote of the

Marquis of Huai-yin, Han Hsin, with whom he shared this virtue. This Marquis starts off as a begger with a reputation for cowardice. Instead of giving into pride after he achieves sudden success, Han Hsin actually uses this negative image to put his enemies off guard. Later in life, he even returns home to reward his early tormentors for inadvertantly guiding him to greatness.

Still, like most of Sima Qian's heros, Han Hsin comes to an unfortunate end. Yet, the Historian's goal is not to present a series of tragedies (or victories for that matter), but to pay respects to the unsung mercenaries and martyrs, the obscure warriors and philosophers. He also branches out to chronicle the lives of wanderers, jesters, and poets. All gain greater significance and character as the Historian compares and contrasts their lives. Sima Qian judged his subjects by their life-long virtues, not by the sum of their triumphs or by desperate final acts. This point of view is radically different from the "might is right" attitude taken by many who felt that the victor's story was the only one worth telling. For after all, Sima Qian himself was misunderstood and dismissed by his peers, it is only natural that he would sympathize with the underdogs of yesteryear. This approach signaled a turning point in the Chinese concepts of heroism.

Discernment is yet another quality both practiced and praised by Sima

Qian. The accounts of the Assassins express that the ability to read people is often necessary for survival. Besides saving ones neck, this skill also enlightens someone with a greater perspective on the world. To recognize the greatness in others is often proven to be a virtue onto itself. This kind of positive discernment found in the Shiji lends to heighten ones own morality; the ability to see through anothers eyes, to walk in their shoes provides a greater understanding of humanity and deepens ones sympathy. And this may be the grand objective of the Historians biographies, to open the mind of the reader.

The Grand Historian comments I have gathered up and brought together all the old traditions of the world that were scattered and lost. I have examined the events of the past and investigated the principles behind their success and failure, their rise and decay, in 10 chapters. I wished to examine into all that concerns heaven and humankind, to penetrate the changes of the past and present, putting forth my views as one school of interpretation...If it may be handed down to those who will appreciate it and penetrate to the villages and great cities, then though I should suffer a thousand mutilations, what regreat would I have?

Importance of accounts to a modern business

In a competitive market a modern business has to know about what is going in and what is going out, without this a business is useless. All businesses, whatever their size, need to keep accurate records particularly about money. The owners want to know what is happening and they have a legal duty to prove that the business is properly run. Businesses need to be constantly aware of the condition of their finances, so that they can try to make adjustments where necessary to keep afloat. Within this essay the various benefits of accounts are described in relation to a modern business.

Initially one of the key points of keeping track of a company's' accounts is to find out if you are making profit. Therefore, by assessing the income and expenditure aspects of the accounts, profit can be calculated and this should help you to analyse your business progress, by comparing with previous years accounts.

Accounting can also highlight individual areas of your business so that you can discover what the successful and unsuccessful areas of your business are. These can then be rectified to improve profits.

Accounts can also show the debts the business owes. This may be important as the business needs to know if they are in debt and if so, they can decrease expenditure in other places.

Also managers and owners can see the accounts where they can decrease expenditure. The business may be spending too much money in a certain area and it may not be necessary.

You can also see where you are spending your money and how much you are spending. You may want to increase/decrease the money going in that certain area.

Accounting also shows what financial resources the business has. This can be important when an individual is checking your accounts to make sure they are up to standards.

If the business has credit facilities, then they will need to know which customers owe them money and how much. Some companies let their customers have a couple of month's credit so this must be checked and kept up to date.

Management can also analyse and evaluate any business decision, they have made that year. For example, if a business may have had to make a major decision, they can analyse whether it was the right choice.

Accounting not only deals with historical records of the business's financial transactions, it can also be used to plan ahead, to forecast results. Businesses can use their accounts to help them prepare budgets concerning the planning of sales, running expenses and profit, etc.

Benchmarking is when the organisation compares their own accounts with another from a similar industry, possibly a competitor. So when your competitors are doing well, you can see where they have done well. Or even if they are not performing well then you can see their mistakes and make sure you don't make the same. But this works both ways, as your competitor's can see yours.

The government needs to make sure that any modern business are fulfilling their tax obligations and that legal requirements are met. The government need to know that the business is not breaking the law and everything is above the board.

In conclusion, therefore I think accounts are extremely important for a modern business to survive. They can be used to see what is going on in your business either to see if you are making profit or used to make budgets for the year coming. As long as they are used properly, accounts can be extremely helpful for all different types of businesses.

In case you experience difficulties with writing a well structured and accurately composed paper on Importance of accounts to a modern business, we are here to assist you. At the age of thirteen a child becomes a teenager. But adolescence can happen at any time during the teenage years. Adolescence is the growth from childhood to manhood or womanhood. Over the years the teenage generations have changed a lot. Back in the early 50s, Wally Cleaver was the ideal teenager. Then in the 70s the hippie generation took over. The 80s were all about big hair and neon colors. But the teenage generation of today has a great desire to be different. In todays culture, we are breaking all the rules and setting new levels of individuality. Teenagers are finding new and exotic ways to express themselves. They do everything from piercing and tattoos to changing their style of clothes and the color of their hair.

When a child reaches a certain age, he or she grows from being a kid to being a teenager. Some people see this change as just puberty, but this stage does a lot more than foster physical changes. These years are the building blocks that are the making of an adult. Probably the single most important step from adolescence to maturity is the transition to healthy independence). During this period, teenagers may change their appearance several times. Finding ones identity in todays rapidly changing world is more difficult than ever before .There are so many choices today that it is hard to decide what to be. Teenagers simply try them all out until they find one that fits.

The challenge of dealing with all the biological and psychosocial changes is enormous. As a child turns into a young adult the body goes through many changes. The feelings and emotions that puberty causes can confuse and scare a child. During puberty the outside body changes as much as the inside. If a young teen develops too fast or too slow it can be hard to get along with peers. The main mental change of a teen is the search for their identity.

Buy cheap TEENS SHOULD BE GIVEN THE FREEDOM THEY WANT to SPEAK term paper

Parents have a big effect on the adolescent years of a teenager. Adolescence doesnt just happen to the adolescent. It happens to his whole family. As teenagers go through adolescence they show expressive freedom. Teenagers want to have the freedom to explore new ways of life. It is important for parents to let their teenagers go through all of these changes. Normally, parental values and standards have been deeply embedded in the young person, but during early adolescence shifts of varying intensity are made toward separation and independence. Parents might be nervous at first but by letting a teenager have this freedom will make him or her a better person in the future.

If parents refuse to let their children express themselves, they are damaging their childrens individuality. If a child is told how to act and dress, with no freedom to express, a child will never learn who he or she really is. This could possibly be the major cause of a mid-life crisis.

During a mid-life crisis, an adult does crazy things that are very different from the normal life an adult would live. These adults are looking for their real life and personality. If their parents had let them find that person inside when they were a teenager, an adult would not have to look for it now. Some adults never find themselves and go back to their old lives because they are too nervous to leave the stable life that they already have. Others who do find who they are can change their entire lives around and possibly hurt many people in the way. Questioning ones life can be disturbing, leading to major job changes or divorce These people could leave their families to start a whole new life. Some adults that go through mid-life crisis can come out of it with a fulfilling new life. Coping with mid-life crisis takes time and energy, but it can help you find greater satisfaction and pleasure in lifeThe most common symptom of a mid-life crisis is the feeling of dissatisfaction. These adults feel like they have nothing to show for their lives. A mid-life crisis could happen at any age in life but the most common age is in the mid-forties. This is the common age because their children are becoming teenagers and the adults are not needed as much. The children do not depend on the adults anymore and the feeling of emptiness sets in. Raising a teenager brings up a lot of unresolved issues from your own adolescence". Adults see the teenager doing all the things that they wanted to do and did not when they were young.

Some parents put a lot of pressure on their teenagers and themselves. Most parents do not realize that they are putting stress on their teens, because the parents think that they are only helping. I think a little pressure is good so parents can keep the upper hand in the family, but too much pressure can just can danger.

Teenagers should be given the opportunity to express themselves, but there is a point where parents should draw the line. Freedom should be given and taken with caution by parents. Parents need to give enough freedom to let their children find themselves, but a parent cannot be blind when a childs expressions are endangering the child.

Parents need to know when a teenager is going past the lines of finding their identity and is putting him or herself in danger. A teen will go through some personality changes and may change their view on life. However, if these changes show evidence of drug use, then parents must intervene. For instance, if a teen is depressed a lot or alone in their room, drug use may be involved. Parents should talk to their teen first. If this is unsuccessful, harsher action must be taken. A doctor or clinic at anytime can give drug tests. Also remember that drug use may only be a phase. Many teens try drugs and do not continue a long-term use of them. Parents need to realize that this is normal and okay for teenagers to do. A parent should only worry or take action if these drugs are done frequently, causing problems with grades, or the teen is causing harm to him/herself or others. Remember that the worst thing for a parent to do is go crazy without talking to the teen first.

People are stereotyped all over the world, but teens seem to receive a double dose of distinction and censure from the society of which they are a part of regardless of how they present themselves to it. Teens are stereotyped mostly by the way that they dress. A teens parents, grades, friends, and activities are all assumed by others based on their style. High school is the main area where most of the stereotyping is going on because high school has every type of person in it.

In order to be aware of a teenagers actions, a parent needs to develop good communication with his or her child. A good relationship between parents and the teenager can only be a positive influence in developing a young adult. The biggest part of a good communication between parents and teenagers is listening. Let the teen talk about his or her problems to you with out judging or yelling. Try to help in a way that feels like a friend is giving advice. This is the best way for parents to help and know about their teenager. If a parent suddenly has interest in a teens life, after a decade of apathy, the teen would take caution in letting the parent become involved. The teen would think that the parent is snooping to find what the teen is doing wrong. It is hard for a teen to talk to a parent like he or she is a best friend when they have never talked before. In the April 000 issue of Teen People Magazine, there was an article titled Parents vs. Privacy. This article is a true story about a male teen that went through a period of hard times in high school. His parents did not understand the changes in there son. The communication between the family broke and the teen did not want to be at home. The parents thought that if they could see what he was doing all the time there would be more communication. Instead, it made things worse. The teen ended up moving out with a friend to get away from his parents. Months later they worked things out and he moved back home. The point of this article is that none of that had to have happened. If the communication between the family had been there before the problems happened, the family could have worked things out a long time ago. Robert Kafka argued that teens should Talk to [their] parents. Find out whats bugging them and sit down to chat about whats going on . This relationship needs to be established before the teenage years so the teenager will feel more comfortable in telling the parents their teenager problems. Parents should also allow a certain amount of privacy. Parents should never search through rooms, pockets, or anything else that belongs to their adolescents. This privacy will show the teenager that the parents trust them and will allow a sense of freedom.

A good communication bond between parents and teenagers can be beneficial through out the their whole lives. A parent is the best friend a person could ever have. Friends come and go, but a parent will be there through thick and thin. Parents will always love and cherish their children. No matter what happens between family's members, make sure it always gets better.

Art and life intertwines. Life is non existent without art. Life is art. Art is life. You cannot look in the world around you and not see art. You might not appreciate it, but all things are art. Even Burglaries can be done in artistic ways even though they are crimes that should be punished for. check this out.

The most recent burglary in Ocean City has led to the arrest of Ingrid Snitchweasel at 45 on Monday afternoon. Snitchweasel, the employee who was responsible for closing The Nuts 'n' Bolts Hardware Store on the night it was buglarized, was arrested as she was unloading merchandise from her van into the back of Lou's Hardware in Rehoboth Beach. "We suspected her all along," said Police Sgt. Leonard Handcuff.

The Nuts 'n' Bolts Hardware store, located in the Seahorse Village Shopping Center, 0504 Ocean Highway, was buglarized late on Sunday night. Irv Oldguy of Sandy Paradise Trailer Community, across the street from the burglarized store, said he thought he heard a crashing noise late Sunday night, but had not reported anything because "those damn kids are always making noise; if I reported every goddam noise I heard, I'd be on the phone to the police all day and all night." The store's manager, Otis Wrenchman, arrived at the store at approximately 815 on Monday Morning, only to find the store vandalized with a rear window smashed and a brick lying inside on the floor.

The merchandise missing included 6 multicolored beach umbrellas, crab cookers, a motorized scooter, a large, unopened box of plastic buckets and shovels, and various items of fishing equipment. Mr. Wrenchman also reported that the cash register had been left open, and an undisclosed amount of money had been taken. The total worth of the merchandise taken is approximately $4000. Apparently, The Nuts 'n' Bolts Hardware Store isn't the only store that has been robbed in this neighborhood recently. Seventeen other stores have been broken into this winter Season along a 14-mile stretch of Ocean Highway. Police chief Paul Itical confirms the frequency with which the buglaries have been occurring in the neighborhood. "We just don't know what is happening," he said. To make at least one arrest has brought a sense of relief to community business owners.

"Our Barbies, Ourselves"

Emily Prager "reveals the damaging effect of a doll that establishes such an impossible standard of physical perfection for little girls- and for little boys who grow up expecting their girlfriends to look like Barbie" in the essay "Our Barbies, Ourselves." At first she introduces the fact that Barbie was designed by a man named Jack Ryan, and then shares personal comments about how now "things made sense" that she had "wondered about for years." The writer then goes on to talk about the effects that Barbie has had on women and girls everywhere; how it effects their self esteem, self conception, an idea of their place in society. She talks about how Barbie is an unrealistic view of a woman for little girls and it has help to develop our country into the "Barbie world" we live in now. The author also allows us to see the other side of Barbie that isn't as obvious as the pretty girls, the feminist side of Barbie. She states how Barbie was an independent woman "with her condos and fashion plazas and pools and beauty salons" from a feminist point of view. Then at the end of the essay the writer switches into a different comparing the differences between Ken and Barbie's sexuality and the way the sexuality of men and women is separated in the entertainment industry still today.

The writer does not support her thesis well because she doesn't use supporting facts to back it up. She tries getting the point across using her personal point of view on the effects of Barbie on the young men and women in America rather than using statistics and actual researched facts. Even though the supporting details of the paper are not factorial she presents her ideas and thoughts well and in a persuasive manner. The way she contrasts the in the paper with a humorous and serious tone keeps the reader interested and captures their mind. A good example of this is in the second paragraph when she seems to be joking about the shape of Barbie's body and the how no woman would have ever designed her to look that way but at the same time she is getting her point across about how Barbie's figure is disproportionate and give a high standard for girl to look up to. She organizes the piece of writing well with a good progression of thoughts from paragraph to paragraph, starting with the origin of Barbie and then moving to her thoughts about what effect the doll has had on the general public and then at the end introducing the effect Barbie has had on the entertainment industry. The author also connects with the reader because she writes the paper as if it is only a conversation with on of her close friends, speaking with simple sentences and vocabulary while expressing complete thoughts.

The essay overall has not been convincing or effective because more of the important pieces of the paper seem to be missing something. The supporting details lack real proof to prove her thesis which makes the writing only personal feeling on the topics. The last, concluding, paragraph does not fit in with the trend the rest of the essay has expressed, instead it switches from effect of Barbie on individuals to the effect of Barbie on and industry. It is also not clear what the purpose of the writing is. Is it to make people aware of the effect Barbie has had on Americans of just a paper with her complaining about how Barbie influenced her. She is to indecisive with her thoughts and jumps from point to point with out enough detail to support it. There were some good parts of the paper like her tone, style and main ideas, but the paper lacks the basis of facts, support and detail. The essay would have had more of an effect on readers is it show more than just the authors view and impression of Barbie.

Witchcraft in the seventeenth century was by no means just a New England, or puritan phenomena. Such outbursts of hysteria could be found across Europe, as well as other American colonies. Nevertheless ninety-five percent of all formal witchcraft accusations in North America in the seventeenth century occurred in New England. Their puritan beliefs obviously strengthened their conviction, in what can now be termed a superstition. It is impossible to explain some of the events and this has led to a great historical debate over the force behind the accusations. A pattern does emerge, however, that suggests that those who failed to fit in, or even seemed a threat to the existing social order, were the most likely to be accused. It therefore appears that in many cases witchcraft scares were used to buttress the existing social order.

The historian G.Kittredge plays down the role of puritanism in explaining the hysteria, pointing out in his work that it could be found in both the Anglican and Catholic church.* When, however, you consider ninety-five per cent of all formal accusations for witchcraft in North America and ninety per cent of all executions for witchcraft in North America, all happened in puritan New England, puritanism can not so easily be dismissed.

New Englanders had a wide range of beliefs we would now most probably term superstitions or myths. These, for example, included the belief in mermaids. One of their principle beliefs was the belief in providential magic, that is searching for signs in the natural world for God's approval or disapproval. Everything, they believed, had a meaning and thus in their thinking there was no such thing as an accident or co-incidence. On top of this we can add their firm belief in the Devil, whose work was carried out on earth by witches. When everything has got a greater meaning, bad luck can look like witchcraft.

Puritanism was a highly individualistic creed. The challenge to puritan society was to focus this individualistic thrust without society dissolving into countless sects, each with their own interpretation of the truth. So whilst it was individualistic, it also required unity. Communities were formed around churches and the decisions of that community were made by that congregation. Only church members could vote or hold office. Puritanism, therefore had no real clear division between political and religious life. A political threat could be taken as a religious threat. Protest and discord were viewed as the work of the Devil. This helps explain why witchcraft scares were so common in New England and shows that they were used to scare off protest and discord, thus buttressing the existing social order.

OSCAR BELLOSO MEDINA

By Andrea Luengo

There are two concepts in the business world that have been reviewed every day by people who want to be successful management and leadership. Managing is nothing more than people, materials and funding, and making the relationship of these disparate items greater than the sum of the parts . On the other hand, leadership is the process of intentionally inspiring and persuading others to achieve enduring goals and fulfill the necessities of the group. A leader is a person who promote changes; someone who is good dealing with competencies such as vision, goal set, self control, perseverance, love, communication, investment and authority.

In Venezuela, Oscar Belloso Medina represents one of the most important entrepreneur leaders who has challenged the educational system to effect the establishment of the first bilingual university in this country.

As a leader, Oscar Belloso started his dream in 165 at the Zulia University. He began working as a professor of Legal Medicine, and began to build his vision of institutions that could bring an educational system that fulfills the expectations of the market, but it was not until 167 when he started teaching Biology in colleges and high schools of the community when he paid attention to what was going on, which events would be important for the future, which would be the new approaches of the education in contrast with the environment that might frame this market. His fertile mind generated the idea to create institutions where

· People would receive an outstanding education and then bring profits to the society.

· The educational system would bring high technology to the community given the opportunity to participate in the worldwide market.

· Professors would develop programs and skills in the students that not only noteworthy satisfy the requirements of Venezuela but also have an impact in the international community.

He committed to this vision and started to set realistic goals to achieve his dreams. Oscar Belloso established his direction through an objective point of view, matching the necessities of the market and likes and dislikes of his customers, creating an institution where high school students could finish their education process in two and half years instead of five. This first institution was named "Universal Institute" with the free-scholar system. As a good leader, he established measurable goals, so by 18, he founded "Dr. Rafael Belloso Chacin College", and "Dr. Rafael Belloso Chacin University" (URBE) in 18. In a conference, he said to the audience that there were many things that made his dreams come true discipline, perseverance and a set agenda. He said "I wrote and described my goals, and set an agenda with a positive point of view of the necessary items to achieve them…the most important fact is to incorporate behavior changes in the goals; it is only in this way that we can make the difference". He understood that setting a goal program would allow people to make right decisions and evaluate goals; otherwise, the external environment would take charge of your decisions and your life.

Furthermore, Oscar Belloso has demonstrated his self control by walking around his organizations, saying "welcome" to students and employee; taking part in the solution of every day problems, and keeping firm his vision even throughout the misfortunate situations that Venezuela has faced. This attitude is a crucial characteristic of a leader, self control brings discipline, strength, freedom and confidence for the one who practice.

In spite of all obstacles and impossibilities Oscar Belloso has been perseverant. He challenged the community's myth that public universities are better than the private ones. He has change the paradigm showing that it is possible to create excellent institutions. He dealt with unforeseeable events but in the end, he promoted the virtual university, the classroom for oral judge practices, the TV and radio station, the first bilingual university in the country and the figure of diplomado programs that are recognized by the Education Ministry of The Bolivarian Venezuelan Republic. He and his team have been perseverant and have never renounced their goal. Every day, they employed new strategies that can be used to obtain other objectives.

Another important factor that frame Oscar Belloso Chacin as a leader is his love. As Maryorin Carrizo wrote in her research work, true love is more than an emotional feeling; it is a "Willpower Act" that a leader works and develops for the good of others. Oscar Belloso frequently expresses his consideration and affection for the others. That is one of the strength of his leadership. He believed in the power of the people and because of it, took the threat of reeducate inmates at The National Jail of Maracaibo in 171. He understands that people work through rewards and love. He is a model to his followers teaching them how love, reward and teamwork help and benefit everyone.

In addition, good communication skills represent another essential factor that describe Oscar Belloso. A leader should have the capacity of influence and organize meaning for the members of the organization. Oscar Belloso is conscious about the power of communication in the development of the organizations to achieve long term development goals and success. He identifies himself with others' experiences, listens to their likes and dislikes and promotes an environment of perpetual innovative learning; as a result, he empowers his team to attain the goals of his institutions with authority, responsibility and acknowledgement. He has manifested the importance of the communication by promoting the development of the URBE web page with links to communicate among the external environment and the institutions, the radio and TV station (URBE is the only university that have this type of communication in Zulia state), and finally with TELLOS magazine, which is the tribune for promotion, debate, discussion, and is acknowledged to offer answer to national problems. Researchers of URBE and any other private and public institutions can participate.

By the way, Oscar Belloso perceived and found the reason for his investment OUTSTANDING EDUCATION. His followers recognized that he is investment for the benefit of themselves. According to Thomas Peters and Robert Walerman in their book "In Search of Excellence Lessons from Americas Best-Run Companies" there are eight factors that contribute for the excellence in different kinds of entities and investment was one of them. Excellent companies invest in their customers; getting close to them to offer an outstanding service and giving the best profit for their money. As a result they gain loyalty from their customer, profitable benefits and so on. Oscar Belloso has invested in his organization offering to their customer better facilities such as health department, studies rooms, parking with electronic counters, opportunities to develop artistic talent that can be performed in an auditorium with a capacity for two hundred and fourteen people and labs for computer, physics and electronics. They are complementary unpaid services that help maximize the individual and collective effort of the community.

Finally, the manifestation of authority helped to Oscar Belloso gain the respect from his followers and community for his convictions about how to coach people to achieve the goals of the organization. He had drive, determination and concentration of the potential of his team. He strongly believed in his vision, ideas and how his leadership benefits stake holders.

In summary, Oscar Belloso represents a charismatic leader distinguished by his managerial results and the satisfaction of his team. He focuses on creating the conditions for achieving his goal, empowering others; and understanding their needs. Oscar Belloso is a leader because the degree to which competency is one of his integral characteristics, and the degree to which others are influenced by his individual behavior and his values . His vision inspires the community, as Simon Bolivar said, "A human being without education is an incomplete human being", and because of this, every semester and year more and more people get integral education from his institutions and are looking forward not only to their own benefits, but also to those of the community.

Ezra Pound, an imperative imagist poet and fascist supporter (Gray), may have alluded to his personal support of fascism and condemnation of democracy (and his anticipation of its downfall after World War II) through his poem "The Garden." In Pound's eyes, the demise of aristocracy would be paralleled with the hopeful downfall of democracy, and the rise of the next era (tyranny) would correspond with the encouraged ascension of fascism. This theme of the disintegrating aristocratic class is illustrated through meaningful similes, allusions, puns, and paradoxes.

The first stanza introduces the poem by conveying the noblewoman as beautiful and fragile, but immediately shatters the illusion of beauty in the next two lines "And she is dying piece-meal /of a sort of emotional anemia" (-4). The word anemia, meaning lack of vitality, is the first depiction of the theme of the poem, in that it suggests the death of the upper class. Pound's diction in line 1 (silk) establishes the woman as noble, as well as shows the reader in the simile (also in line 1), "Like a skein of loose silk blown against a wall," that she is greatly restricted in both her social, and later her romantic life.

Stanza two introduces the "rabble" of the lower class. Through these three lines, the theme of the dying aristocracy is further conveyed by the contrast to the "unkillable infants of the very poor" (6). The powerful allusion in line 7 foreshadows the domination of the earth by the lower class "They shall inherit the earth." In the bible, the line reads verbatim as, "Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth." Meek, of course, refers to the lower class of the very poor and the prophesy that they shall be rewarded later in life (Froula).

In the third stanza, the theme is finally established with the pun in line 8. The phrase "end of breeding" illustrates both the woman's ill fate of being unable to give birth to a child, as well as the end of the era of privilege and aristocracy.

Do my essay on Analysis of Ezra Pound's "The Garden" CHEAP !

Using a paradox, the fourth stanza clearly rationalizes the theme of the depleting aristocracy by recognizing the accepted philosophy of the noble class "She would like someone to speak to her, /And is almost afraid that I /Will commit that indiscretion." While the lonely woman is longing to speak to someone, it is morally and socially unacceptable for a woman of noble stature to associate with anyone outside her own class. This stanza establishes that the ancient ritual of courtship will expire along with the aristocratic society, and also fully elucidates the reasoning behind the theme of the poem.

In Pound's words, "The Garden" was compose[d] in the sequence of the musical phrase, not in the sequence of the metronome(Gray). As a result, "The Garden" can be defined as a prominent imagist literary work in terms of its free verse meter and its direct approach to the theme of the dying aristocracy (Froula). Pound's contributions to the world of poetry through such distinctive poems as "The Garden" were unprecedented. Although he abandoned the Imagist movement only two years after its birth for Vorticism (Gray), Pound's instigation of the Imagist movement spawned the discovery of many remarkable poets, including William Carlos Williams, Marianne Moore, Wallace Stevens, and T.S. Eliot, each of whom would follow in Pound's footsteps, making Imagism a prominent literary movement in the early 100's (Gray).

Introduction

In this project I will be analysing two short stories Turned and A Lorn Milkmaid. I will specifically be focusing on the Women in both stories, discussing their personalities, their problems and how they deal with them. At first I will analyse the Women from both stories separately, I will then discuss all of my analysis and see if any of the women are similar

We start with the women in the story Turned.

The first of the two women I will analyse is Mrs Marroner. She is married to a very rich man. She is a very intelligent woman with a PH.D, She considers herself very superior, and is very reserved; she prides herself on her ability to control her emotions with her strong Boston - bred attitude.

The second Woman is Gerta. She is a Swedish and is employed by the Marroner's as a maid. Although poorly educated and young, Gerta is extremely patient and with careful tuition takes to new ideas and learns quickly.

Now that we have a basic outline of the female characters, the story line can now be explained in brief.

The Marroner's are living comfortably with their maid Gerta. Mrs Marroner is anxious to teach Gerta the ways of the world. Mrs Maroner is a very cold person but has decided to try and use her knowledge and saint like patience to educate Gerta. Gerta is an eighteen year old Swedish housemaid, who a least in Mrs Marroner's eyes is very naïve. Mr Marroner has to go away on business suddenly, Greta and Mrs Marroner are left alone to look after one another. Mr Marroner is delayed by a few months, Mrs Marroner notices that Gerta is looking unwell, at first she suspects home sickness, then illness which are both denied by Gerta. Eventually Mrs Marroner suspects something which Gerta can't deny pregnancy. Mrs Marroner is annoyed when she thinks of all the painstaking work she did with Gerta, teaching her to be more refined with men. However, with the combination of her feeling sorry for the poor "child" and Gerta begging at her feet for forgiveness, Mrs Marroner decides to let Gerta stay until she has had the baby, then get them both back to Sweden somehow. A few weeks' later two letters arrive, Gerta is out and so Mrs Marroner takes them in. The letters are both identical one for Mrs Marroner and one for Gerta, they are both from Mr Marroner. At first Mrs Marroner doesn't think much of it, Mr Marroner has sent postcards and things like that for Gerta in the past. She left Gerta's letter on the table and took her own into her room. It started "My poor child", Mrs Marroner thought this was very strange, as she read on it gave details of Gerta's pregnancy, and that Mr Marroner was the father. He enclosed a fifty dollar bill and told her if Mrs Marroner finds out be sure to leave your address at his office. Mrs Marroner was outraged she waited for Gerta to get home and told Gerta to open her letter, and read it. Gerta is reluctant but does as she was told. Her letter starts "My dear wife". It is obvious that Mr Marroner has mixed up the letters and put them in the wrong envelopes. Gerta is sent away to pack by Mrs Marroner, as she packs Mrs Marroner then has a long cry (much against he principles), She then has a cold shower and trys to think. Mrs Marroner regrets sending Gerta away she knows Mr Marroner took advantage of her; she goes up to Gertas room to find her sleeping, Mrs Marroner goes back down stairs.

When Mr Marroner gets home he finds the house deserted, no note or anything. He suspects his wife knows he goes into work the next day. Mrs Marroner's solicitor presents him with a letter, it just read "we have gone, I will look after Gerta, goodbye". Mr Marroner stays on his own in the house until curiosity causes him to hire a group of private detectives to find his wife. They eventually track her down to a guesthouse, which she is running under her maiden name. When Mr Marroner goes to see her, she is sitting in the front room with Gerta and her baby. She simply says, "What have you to say to us?" And that's where the story ends.

Let us examine the women in this story

Gerta

Not much to say really, a young Swedish girl. Mr Marroner takes advantage of her innocence and gets her pregnant. She is helped by the much more interesting…

…Mrs Marroner.

Mrs Marroner is definitely the most interesting woman in the play. She is educated, has the patience of a saint and despite her upbringings has a warm heart. Lets look at how she handles the key situation in the story, when she finds out what her husband has done. After she sends Gerta away to pack, she goes to her own room and lets all her emotions out by having a big cry. Then she has a cold shower and a warm bath, to clean her body and mind so she can think. She reaches the conclusion that Mr Marroner took advantage of Gerta. She therefor leaves the house and takes Gerta with her, so she can help raise the baby. That takes a lot of courage and shows what type of women Mrs Marroner is.

We now move on to the story A Lorn Milkmaid.

As this story is in a different style to Turned, I'm going to set my analysis out differently. Rather than write a compacted version of the whole story, I'm going to look at a specific scene in the story, for each woman and analyse her reactions etc.

We start with Rhoda

Rhoda is a middle aged dairy worker; she lives in a cottage with her son. Rhoda used to be in a relationship with the owner of the dairy she works at, Farmer Lodge. The farmer ended the relationship a few years ago, he now intends to marry another woman who is considerably younger than him.

The scene we are going to analyse for Rhoda is one in which Mrs lodge comes to visit Rhoda's cottage. Mrs Lodge is not at all like Rhoda imagined, she has brought with her some useful articles including a new pair of boots for Rhoda's son. Mrs Lodge is dressed in fairly ordinary clothes as opposed to the rich silk dresses; Rhoda had mentally fitted her with. Rhoda's son is absent and so Rhoda answers the door. Mrs Lodge bids Rhoda good day. Rhoda cautiously returns the compliment. After various points of conversation, Mrs Lodge shows Rhoda her arm and says. "One night when I was sound asleep, dreaming I was away in some strange place, a pain suddenly shot in my arm there, and was so keen as to have awakened me". Rhoda looked at the arm; it had bruising on it. Rhoda thought back to her own dream the night before, how she seized the arm of Farmer Lodge's new wife. Rhoda asked Mrs Lodge how she did it, Mrs Lodge did not know but she thought it would soon disappear. Having delivered the boots Mrs Lodge left, but Rhoda could not stop thinking of her dream.

We can see from this particular this scene that Rhoda is a very insecure person, possibly slightly aggressive particularly towards Mrs Lodge. We know that Rhoda has always been jealous of the farmer's new wife, it is always on her mind even when she is sleeping, she is dreaming of attacking Mrs Lodge. However, when she actually meets Mrs Lodge she finds her to be a kind woman rather than the ogre she visualised in her dream. However, when Mrs Lodge asks Rhoda if she knows what may be wrong with her arm, Rhoda does not tell her about the dream. This is a further example of Rhoda's deep hatred for Mrs Lodge.

We will now look at a scene in which we can analyse Mrs Lodge.

This scene is set some years later the mark on Mrs Lodge's arm is still there, it has also grown into a much bigger scar, which has practically engulfed her whole arm. Mrs Lodge has been told by a spiritualist that the only way she can rid herself of this ailment is to touch the body of a man who has been hanged. After careful thought Mrs Lodge decides to take the spiritualist's advice. When the Farmer Lodge is away on business, Mrs Lodge gains access to a prison in order to touch a hanged corpse.

Mrs Lodge is in a grey mood; she notices how quickly the man must have been thrown into the cheap coffin because his coat was still sticking out. Looking very sombrely, she walks over to the coffin.

Mrs Lodge is a very gentle woman, she is prepared to go to any length to please other people. It was immaterial to her how her arm looked; however Farmer Lodge refused to touch her until the arm was better. When Mrs Lodge went to the prison she was so considerate as to notice how a common criminal had been placed in his coffin. As she approached the man, she was truly distressed about his execution. This is the ultimate example of Mrs Lodge's kind nature.

Conclusion

It is clear that the women in these two stories have very little in common. However they all have their own qualities and faults. Gerta the maid from the story Turned has her innocence, however she also has her poor level of education. Mrs Marroner from the same story has her high level of education, but also has her tendency to jump to the wrong conclusions. Rhoda from the story A Lorn Milkmaid has her vulnerability, however she also has the ability to hate another person to the point of obsession. Mrs Lodge has a quality, which is also a weakness her basic kindness allows people to take advantage of her.

I would say the one thing that these two stories in common is the sentiment that no one is perfect.

I recently was involved in a situation at work that has caused some problems for me both personally and professionally. My hope is by sharing this situation with others I might be able to come away with new insights that might help avoid future problems. I work at Priority Express Couriers which, as you might expect, is a courier company. In addition to delivering individual packages on a same day, on demand format, we also provide structured pre-scheduled route services for clients that have more consistent, specific logistical needs and it is from that realm of the businesses that this case study was born.

One of the regularly scheduled routes that we provide is for Ikon Office Solutions. Their regional distribution center is located in Oaks Pa. roughly 40 miles northwest of Philadelphia. Ikon sales & service personnel from the Mid Atlantic coast region, who require supplies, order the them from the Oaks distribution center during the day. After processing and preparing them for shipment our company retrieves them for delivery throughout the night. Because neither the Ikon distribution center or the delivery locations are staffed 4 hours a day, a system has been created that allows our couriers security access to the various places they need to go. The route, as it is structured now, runs without any direct communication between Ikon personnel and priority Express staff.

One specific night an Ikon manager called in the afternoon and left a message to "let us know" that there would be "a lot" of product for the route later that night. The instructions were that "if it all does not fit in the van pack what you can and leave the rest for tomorrow". The courier, upon arrival, found enough products to fill nearly two vans. He did is we were instructed from the message and began his route leaving four of ten stops behind for the next day. As a courtesy we thought that we should call the sales reps that were not going to be receiving their deliveries so that they would have an idea what had happened. Our database had work phone numbers for both reps however one phone number just rang and rang until it went dead with no voicemail options or recorded message to direct us. The other number immediately picked up and directed us to input our service code number. We had never heard of this "service code number" and had no idea what it might be. We then called the distribution center number and were able to leave a message with our "contact" concerning what we had done. We also attached a copy of the notes regarding our problems to the paperwork we submit to our supervisors.

The next night we arrived to find the same message and the same solution was applied. The third night we arrived for work and there was no message from Ikon however our courier was once again not able to fit everything into the van. Even though we didn't get a call we continued with the process that we had used the prior two days. At 00am the next morning the Ikon distribution center manager called furious that we had deviated from the protocol by taking action without direct communication with the distribution centers or the reps and that we were likely to lose their business as a result. We immediately reviewed our procedures book for Ikon and found that the only other contact information we had was the reps cell phone numbers which had printed underneath then in red bold letters COURIERS DO NOT CALL REPS CELL PHONES.

Our supervisors wanted to know why we had not followed proper "procedures" and why we had not alerted them about the problems we had been encountering?

Its always important for a business to be socially acceptable. Businesses should always be ethically responsible.

To really make a business sucessful their are four steps you can take to achieve socail responsiblity as well as being successful in general. For any business to be sucessful it must know how to keep both consumers and employees happy. If this acomblished its proved that a organization will report a reduded emploee turnover rate and productivity will increase. (http//www.business-ethics.org/corpadv.html) If a place of business has sound business morals then it will usually have these findings first key point is keep consumers and employees content will help business because the consumers will be more willing to come back and the employee will be more encouraged to work productivly. Second step to follw would be make sure the public is aware of your good practice and sound morals. Comsumers look to shop at places where the place of business hold stong ethics and follows through on them. Its sometimes the primary conmsideration for a consumer. (http//www.business-ethics.org/corpadv.html) The final step is a business should make sure to have international regulatory development which bring legal and financial securities to business to provide standards of conduct to employees. You must always tell your public the truth even if it involves lying while being honest. a company must always be honest but can make things look to be too good to be true. food companies use the tactic all the time on nutrition informationlabels on pacages. For example an oreo bag gives you the information per a serving of one cookie the information is all true but its decieving because who would only eat one cookie. That how you can lie but still be honest in the business world. You should never make a claim you cannot back up. maing a clain in which you cannot support is uaully a claim that can cause a company a lot of money because the get sued for false advertising.as long as you are making a claim you can back up you are keep yourself in the clear. (http//web.gbrown.ca). being able to lie while telling the thruth is a great marketing tactic to have it can bring in a lot of money especailly working with food you can decieve people into eat more of the product because they dont realize exaclty what they are intaking.

Nutrition is the relationship of foods to the health of the human body. Proper nutrition means that you are receiving enough foods and supplements for the body to function at optimal capacity. It is important to remember that no single nutrient or activity can maintain optimal health and well being, although it has been proven that some nutrients are more important than others. All of

the nutrients are necessary in different amounts along with exercise to maintain proper health.

There are six main types of nutrients used to maintain body health. hey are carbohydrates, fats, proteins, vitamins, minerals, and water. They all must be in balance for the body to function properly. There are also five

major food groups. The groups are fats and oils, fruits and vegetables, dairy products, grains, and meats.

Exercise is also an important part of nutrition. Exercise helps tone and maintains muscle tissue and ensures that the bodys organs stay in good condition. Healthy eating without exercise will not result in good nutrition

and a healthy body - neither will exercise without nutrition. The most important thing about exercise is that it be practiced regularly and that it be practiced in accompaniment with a healthy diet. It is also desirable to

practice more that one sport as different sports exercise different areas of the body. Carbohydrates, proteins, and fats are the sources of energy for the body. The contained energy is expressed in calories. There are calories per gram in fat and there are about 4 calories per gram in proteins and carbohydrates. Carbohydrates are the main source of energy for the body. This energy is mostly

used for muscle movement and digestion of food. Some sources of carbohydrates are grains, fruits, vegetables, and anything else that grows out of the ground. The energy in carbohydrates is almost instantly digested. This results in a quick rise in blood sugar which is soon followed by a drop in blood sugar which is interpreted by the body as a craving for more sugars. This sugar low may also result in fatigue, dizziness, nervousness, and headache. However, not all carbohydrates do this. Most fruits, vegetables, legumes, and whole grains are digested more slowly. Fats, which are lipids, are the source of energy that is the most concentrated. Fats produce more that twice the amount of energy that is in carbohydrates or proteins. Besides having a high concentration of energy, fat acts as a carrier for the fat soluble vitamins, A, D, E, and K. Also, by helping in the absorption of vitamin D, fats help make calcium available to various body tissues, in particular, the bones and teeth. Another function of fat is to convert carotene to vitamin A. Fat also helps keep organs in place by surrounding them in a layer of fat. Fat also surrounds the body in a layer that preserves body temperature and keeps us warm. One other function of fat is to slow the production of hydrochloric acid thereby slowing down digestion and making food last longer. Some sources of fats are meats and nuts as well as just plain oils and fats. Proteins, besides water, are the most plentiful substance in the body. Protein is also one of the most important elements for the health of the body. Protein is the major source of building material in the body and is important in the development and growth of all body tissues. Protein is also needed for the formation of all hormones. It also helps regulate the bodys water balance. When proteins are digested they are broken down into simpler sections called amino acids. However, not all proteins will contain all the necessary amino acids. Most meat and dairy products contain all necessary amino acids in their proteins. Proteins are available from both

plants and animals. However, Animal proteins are more complete and thus

desirable. Knowledge of the nutrients and their function is essential to

understanding the importance of good nutrition. As mentioned above, there are

six nutrients. All vitamins are organic food substances that are found only in

living things, plants and animals. It is believed that there are about twenty

substances that are active as vitamins in human nutrition. Every vitamin is

essential to the proper growth and development of the body. With a few

exceptions, the body cannot make vitamins and must be supplied with them.

Vitamins contain no energy but are important as enzymes which help speed up

nearly all metabolic functions. Also, vitamins are not building components of

body tissues, but aid in the construction of these tissues. It is impossible to

reliably determine the vitamin requirements of an individual because of

differences in age, sex, body size, genetic makeup, and activity. A good source

of a recommendation is the RDA. The RDA makes its recommendations based on

studies of consumption of the given nutrient. On the recommendation it will

usually specify what size diet the recommendation is based on, for example, a

two thousand calorie per day diet. It is harmless to ingest excess of most

vitamins. However, some vitamins are toxic in large amounts. Vitamin A is a fat

soluble vitamin which is only available in two forms. Pre-formed, which is

found in animal tissue. The other is carotene, which can be converted into

Vitamin A by animals. Carotene is found in easily found in carrots as well as

other vegetables. Vitamin A is important to the growth and repair of body

tissues and helps maintain a smooth, soft, and disease free skin. It also helps

protect the mucus membranes of the mouth, nose, throat, and lungs which reduces

the chance of infection. Another function is helping mucus membranes combat the

effects of air pollutants. Vitamin A also protects the soft lining of all the

digestive tract. Another function of vitamin A is to aid in the secretion of

gastric juices. The B complex vitamins have many known sub-types, but they all

are water soluble vitamins. The B vitamins can be cultivated from a variety of

bacteria, yeast, fungi, or molds. They are active in the body by helping the

body convert carbohydrates into glucose, a form of sugar. B vitamins are also

vital in the metabolism of proteins and fats. They are also the single most

important element in the health of the nerves. B vitamins are also essential

for the maintenance of the gastrointestinal tract, the health of the skin, hair,

eyes, mouth, liver, and muscle tone. The intestine contains bacteria that

produce vitamin b but milk-free diets, and taking sulfonamides or antibiotics

can destroy these bacteria. Whole grains contain high concentrations of B

complex vitamins. Also, enriched bread and cereal products contain high

concentrations of B vitamins due to a governmental intervention of the whole

food group to ensure that the nation was getting enough B vitamins Vitamin C,

also known as ascorbic acid, is a water soluble vitamin. It is sensitive to

oxygen and is the least stable of all vitamins. One primary function of

vitamin C is to maintain collagen, a protein necessary for the formation of skin,

ligaments, and bones. Vitamin C also plays a role in healing of burns and

wounds because it aids the formation of scar tissue. It also helps form red

blood cells and prevents hemorrhaging. Another function is to prevent the

disease, scurvy, which used to be seen in sailors because of their lack of

vitamin C in their diet. This was corrected by issuing each sailor one lime per

day which supplied citric acid, a source of vitamin C. Other sources include

broccoli, Brussels sprouts, Strawberries, Oranges, and grapefruits. Vitamin E

is a fat soluble vitamin which is made up of a group of compounds called

tocoherols. There are seven forms of it but the form known as Alpha tocoherols

is the most potent. Tocoherols occur in the highest concentrations in cold

pressed vegetable oils, all whole raw seeds and nuts, and soybeans. Vitamin E

plays an essential role in cellular respiration of all muscles, especially the

cardiac and skeletal. It makes these muscles able to function with less oxygen,

thereby increasing efficiency and stamina. It also is an antioxidant, which

prevents oxidization. This prevents saturated fatty compounds from breaking

down and combining to form toxic compounds. Minerals are nutrients that exist

in the body and in organic and inorganic combinations. There are approximately

seventeen minerals that are necessary in human nutrition. Although only about

four or five percent of the body weight is mineral matter, minerals are

important to overall mental and physical health. All of the bodys tissues and

fluids contain some amount of mineral. Minerals are necessary for proper muscle

function and many other biological reactions in the body. Minerals are also

important in the production of hormones. Another important function of minerals

is to maintain the delicate water balance of the body and to regulate the bloods pH. Physical and emotional stress causes a strain on the bodys supply of minerals. A mineral deficiency often results in illness, which may be treated by the addition of the missing mineral to the diet. Calcium, a primary mineral, is available through dairy products. In order to get all the other minerals, one should eat protein rich foods, seeds, grains, nuts, greens, and limited amounts of salt or salty foods. Nutrition is just one aspect of total

body health. It is important to remember that on must compliment good nutrition

with good exercise and emotional health in order to achieve complete well being.

It is also important to remember that no one part of nutrition will completely

fulfill the bodys requirements for health.

1. a) Bulk movement is the overall movement of a fluid. The molecules all

move in the same direction. Diffusion however is the random movement of

molecules which usually results in a fairly even distribution. In other

words the movement is not guaranteed to move in one direction but the

Help with essay on Cell Membrane

probability that it will move in the lower gradient is greater. Osmosis is

similar to diffusion but is differentiated by the membranes behavior. The

cell membrane does allow water to move from higher to lower concentrations

but does not allow solutes do that. b) Water potential is the capacity of

water to move to a from a region where there is high water potential to low

water potential. This action happens without the affect of outside forces.

When outside actions due occur and they give water a high potential energy

than the water will move to the region where less potential energy is.

Hydrostatic pressure is the pressure required to stop water the movement of

water. This is a method of measurement. The osmotic potential is the

measure of tendency of water to move through a membrane which contains a

solution. This occurs when a cell does not allow a hypertonic solution to

leave the cell membrane. The cell begins to increase with water but the

cell membrane can not release the solution and thus the water potential

within the cell increases. This causes the water to no longer enter the

cell. c) Hypotonic is less solute to a certain amount of water. Hypertonic

is more solute to a certain amount of water. Isotonic is the equal amount

of solutes in two different solutions. d) Endocytosis is the inward bulge

causes by incoming molecules. Exocytosis is the expelling of a material

outside a cell. e) Phagocytosis is the process where the cell obtains

solid matter. This is different from the pinocytosis where the cell

obtains liquid matter. These both are endocytic processes.

Receptor-mediated endocytosis is the process where there are interactions

between a material and receptor sites on the cell. In this process the

cell accepts the material if it matches with the receptor sites. f) Coated

pits are areas which peripheral proteins indent the membrane. This is

where the vesicles for certain materials are formed. The vesicle which is

formed is called the coated vesicle. g) Plasmodesmata are the links

which hold two adjacent cells together. Gap junctions are the channels

which allow materials to flow between cells.

. The concentration gradient is the difference in the density of a

material from one region to another region. The concentration gradient

affects diffusion by allowing the substance to flow from high concentration

to low concentration. The concentration gradient affects osmosis by the

same manner it does in diffusion. The cell does not allow the solution to

exit the cell when water is entering. This keeps the solution in the cell

making the concentration high and thus no further penetration of water.

4. Diffusion is more rapid in gases because they are less dense than

liquids. They repel each other more resulting in faster diffusion.

Diffusion is greater at higher temperatures because of the greater kinetic

energy among the molecules. They push each other more making them less dense.

5. The concentration of the solute is 1%. This happens because a 1% sugar

solution is isotonic with that of the 1% sugar solution in the tubes. The

% sugar solution was increased because the substance was hypertonic. The

membrane did not allow the hypertonic solution to exit because the pressure

from the hypotonic solution was forcing water in. This later reached an

equilibrium when the hypertonic solution was gaining water potential and

the water stopped rising. The vice versa happened in the distilled water solution.
