Archaeology has also revealed Publius Valerius as a historical character at about the right date, 'the companions of Poplios Valesios made a dedication to Mars at Satricum, a Latin town some forty miles south of Rome.(7) But that local warlord seems to have little in common with the democratic constitutionalist of the Roman story.

The trouble with archaeological discoveries is that they encourage the Schliemann fallacy find the site of Troy, and youve proved the Iliad is true. Even the best modern historians sometimes succumb to this temptation.

The study of early Rome has been put on a wholly new footing by Tim Cornells brilliant synthesis The Beginnings of Rome (15). Cornell has no illusions about the tradition on the birth of the Republic 'it has the appearance of a historical romance, and forms a self-contained saga of connected stories! But, he goes on, 'there is no reason in principle why the tradition should not be a romanticised version of events that really happened. It is arbitrary to dismiss the rape of Lucretia (for instance) as fiction, when we have no way of knowing whether it is fiction or not.(8) That is, it purports to be true; it could be true; why should it not be true?

Further, 'we might be tempted to argue that the overthrow of Tarquin was followed by a confused period of turmoil in which various members of his family and other leading figures struggled for power, replacing each other in rapid succession ... -- and the note makes it explicit that 'they would include his relatives Brutus and Collatinus, but perhaps also Valerius Poblicola ['The Peoples Friend], who held the consulship three years in succession, and in the traditional story was suspected of aiming at kingship.() So perhaps there really were five 'consuls in Year One.

How do we know Valerius held the consulship three years running? Cornell takes it as a fact because he believes that 'the practice of recording the names of the men who held the chief magistracy must go back to the very early years of the Republic, and it is certain that continuous lists were kept in written form.(10) If that were so, then documentary evidence would guarantee the five names as authentic. But it is, to put it mildly, an adventurous hypothesis.(11) Its also inconsistent with Cornells own suggested model for Year One why should the victor in that putative power snuggle carefully record his rivals names as equal to his own?

So forget any idea of archival evidence. What we have is the tradition, and what matters is how we handle it. 'In each case, says Cornell, 'one must ask, first, whether there are grounds for regarding a story as ancient, or as a relatively late invention; and second, whether there are reasons for thinking that it might be based on fact. Well, and good, as far as it goes. But then 'The burden of proof lies as heavily on those who wish to deny as on those who wish to affirm.(1) And that, with the greatest respect, just will not do.

The burden of proof is on whoever challenges the prima facie presumption. And what is the prima facie presumption here? Not, I think., that authors writing five hundred years later, in a tradition of written history no more than two hundred years old, are likely to have reported the events accurately, or even recognisably. In such circumstances, to treat 'Why shouldnt it be true? as a no less valid question than 'Why should it? comes pretty dose to abdicating the historians responsibility.(1)

Better, in any case, to ask a different type of question. What sort of stories are they, and how may they have come about?

I think that begs a big question about the nature of 'the state; and Oakleys general treatment of archival evidence seems to me more relevant to the fourth century (the period covered by Books 6-10) than the fifth or late sixth.

Working Teenagers

In some countries, teenagers have jobs while they are still students. There are

several reasons why a child decides to work at such a young age or why sometimes is

Write my Essay on Working teenagers for me

forced to do so, but they are not strong enough to overcome the fact that after all a

teenager is still a child and should do things appropriate to its age. Although one of

the reasons a teenager works is in order to help financially his family, he should avoid

having a job while he's still a student because at this young age he should have other

things as priorities, such as having fun, studying for school, and getting the best

educational bases for his future career in the working field.

Some people would argue that there are many advantages for the teenager that

works while he is still a student. The most important arguments that those people

state is that a working teenager learns many things about life through his job and gets

the practical experience to enter the real world in a more dynamic way when he

finishes school. He also learns to be financially indipendent and, to understand the

value of money. That, is also of great comfort and help for families of low economic

status that need to have all of its members working in order to support themselves.

There is no doubt that those arguments are true but they can't be compared to the

things a teenager loses when he has to work and go to school at the same time.

One of the main reasons that a student shouldn't work is the fact that he will not

have time for himself. At that age he is still a child that needs to have fun, go out

with friends and enjoy himself as much as he can, instead of having the

responsibilities that a job provides. A student's time is important to be dedicated to

himself and a job while being at school will not leave much time to the teenager for

personal pleasure and activities.

Another reason why a student should not work has to do with his productivity. I

f he works half a day he has no time to study for school and as a result he doesn't do

well. He gets very tired because his day is full and therefore he is not able or willing

to perform well neither at his job nor at school.

Finally, one of the chief arguments against the fact that teenagers work while they

are still studying has to do with the importance of education. Before entering the

working field a person must create the best educational bases he can, starting from

finishing high-school. A student should devote himself in getting as much knowledge

he can in order to make future achievements and in order to be able to survive from

the competition in the working field later on. As a child that he still is, he should

bother getting as stronger theoretical knowledge and experience before he gets into

practice.

Personally, I hope that all teenagers have the opportunity to have the best

education they can before they get a job, although sometimes their needs force them

to find one at that young age that they are still at school. I believe that every thing

must be done in a certain time in order to have the best results and that teenagers are

still children and should have other priorities and other things in their minds instead of a job

Kate Chopin, "The Story of an Hour,"

Charlotte Perkins Gilman, "The Yellow Wallpaper,"

and Susan Glaspell, "A Jury of Her Peers."

In our society men are considered the head of house hold. They are the providers for the family. Women are looked as house wives. A woman is to be submissive to her husband. Daughters also look up to their fathers with the same reflection. These three women with different lives experience the same treatment from their husband.

Cheap Custom Essays on Comparison between three women

In the first story Mrs. Mallard husband is presumed dead. She hears the news of his death and immediately weeps but not for long. She went to her room by herself. Mrs. Mallard didn't want anyone looking at her in case she showed any signs of relief. While in her room she realized, her knew life begins today. The narrator says that "She could see in the open square before her house the tops of trees that were all aquiver with the new spring of life". (185)

Mrs. Mallard was a young woman with fair skin. Her face showed of lines from repression of her husband. Her husband had broken her will. As she sat in her room, something began to come over her. She didn't know what the feeling was. Soon she realized it was her will coming back. It frightened her. She thought to the day of his funeral. She knew she'd had to show remorse. Her love for was an act to present to family and friends. Mrs. Mallard lived with this man for years and had to make the best of it. He didn't look at her with love. She could see this and thought to herself "She knew that she would weep again when she saw the king, tender hands folded in death; the face that had never looked save with love upon her, fixed and gray and dead".(186)

In her future she would only live for herself. No one can have power over her and to bend her will. She wanted to live. She could hold her head up without the fear of being put down. When she left her room that filled her with power. It was taken from her again at the bottom of the steps. Her will, dreams, hopes, freedom, and life were taken as Mr. Mallard stood at the bottom of the stairs.

The second story is about a wife that goes through similar things as Mrs. Mallard. John is a husband that is dominating. He treats his wife like a child and expects her to follow his every command. Jane gives into his every command. John believes his wife is sick but not that sick. He wants her to recover from her illness quickly. He gives her a chance by taking her to a remote area. Jane repeats why John has brought her there. "He said we came here solely on my account, that I was to have perfect rest and all the air I could get".(75) By taking her to this remote area, she is stripped from having any type of enjoyment even company. He is strong minded about this so much that he gets his sister to make sure his wife follow his rules.

When she wants to talk to him, he blows her off and laughs at her. She makes a remark about John not wanting to understand her. He acts as if he hasn't been sick or had any problems in his life. "I suppose John never was nervous in his life. He laughs at me so about this wall-paper"!(76)

She knows that he loves her, but will not let her decide for herself. Jane begins to cry more often than usual. Her will power is beginning to break. She sees that and makes a remark "It is getting to be a great effort for me to think straight. Just this nervous weakness I suppose".(7) She speaks a lot about woman creeping. It turns out that she is the one that is creeping because during the day time her sister-in-law is there watching her. This represents the bars on the wallpaper that holds the woman in. When night fall comes, she moves around more because everyone is sleeping. This is the only time she can creep about without someone watching her.

She begins to realize that her time is running short. Now is the time to overcome her illness and receive the freedom she wants. She no longer wants to be guarded or ignored. The woman in the wallpaper is her. The husband and sister-in-law kept her wrapped up in so many emotions. To break out of the wallpaper, she finally makes her husband listen to her. This was the beginning of her freedom. She even says this. "I've got out at last," said I, "in spite of you and Jane. And I've pulled off most of the paper, so you can't put me back"!(85)

The last woman wasn't only dominated by her husband, but she was ridiculed by her peers. Women are judged more harshly than men. Mrs. Wright was being judged without a jury. She was once a pretty woman filled with life. After Mrs. Wright marriage and no children, her husband was cruel to her. He would have faulted her for not being able to bear children.

After all the years of a dominating husband, he broke her will and spirit. She no longer took to fancy herself. The men that searched her home made cruel remarks about her house keeping. She let the house go, her friends, and any other plans she had. Mrs. Hale and Mrs. Peters were the only ones that showed her any pity. Mrs. Hale knew that Mrs. Wright's husband had to be cruel to her because Mrs. Wright was a lively person twenty years ago. She made this remark to make everyone look at Mrs. Wright in a different way. "She used to wear pretty clothes and be lively - when she was Minnie Foster, one of the town girls, singing in the choir".(4)

The ladies noticed a box of Mrs. Wright and found a bird that had been killed. They felt that this bird was Mrs. Wrights' only pleasure. They believed that Mr. Wright killed the bird because the birdcage door was broke and had been pulled apart. Mrs. Wrights' right to love and heart to care about other things and people were taken. She was shut up in her home day in and day out. Having to live with a man that didn't love her made something inside her snap. She was finally feed up with his cruelty. She killed him in the same manner that he killed her bird. To lose this bird, made Mrs. Wright make her first step to freedom. Mrs. Hale and Mrs. Peters concealed the bird from the other men that were in the house. By doing this they gave Mrs. Wright her second step to freedom. "Martha Hale snatched the box from the sheriff's wife, and got it in the pocket of her big coat just as the sheriff and the country attorney came back into the kitchen."(0)

These women have suffered. They've given up their wright to think on their own. By having endured so much abuse, they didn't have will power to fight or bounce back. Often some women make the mistake of searching for a husband that reminds them of their father. They are raised to think that, this kind of treatment is right. They search for someone who can provide and take control of the home.

Believe it or not, the familiar fear of mice extends beyond the rodent realm to the world of technology.

The good news is that there is a way in the retail realm to avoid the computer mouse and also save time, money and improve efficiency.

James Cagle, president of Greensboro-based Performance Oriented Solutions Inc., says that using a touchscreen system instead of a mouse can eliminate 70 percent of training time. That means that in 0 minutes, a restaurant staff can be trained to use his system.

In October, Winston-Salem-based The Village Tavern will test a new handheld version of Cagles touchscreen system, following up on its installation of the stationary terminals in the first of its seven restaurant in 15.

Jeff Olds, assistant controller for The Village Tavern, says the company spent about $60,000 to equip each restaurant with the software and hardware for the stationary terminals. The cost of a handheld unit, which works with the existing system, is about a third of the cost of one of a terminal.

The return on investment is in increased efficiency and thus increased profit, Olds says.

What were looking for is increased table turns by shortening the length of time between when (diners) sit down and leave, Olds says.

Touchscreens allow servers to enter orders and transmit them to the kitchen in a more expeditious manner, Olds says, resulting in about 80 more tables being served on an average day.

Cost of the touchscreen system ranges from $75 to in excess of $00,000, depending on the size of the operation and its needs, Cagle says. His clients, which run the gamut from restaurants to hair salons, choose between touchscreen monitors that connect to a separate computer and range from $750 to $1,50 or single, integrated units that range from $,000 to $5,000.

A company that spends $0,000 can expect to see a return on its investment in 11 months to 4 months, Cagle says.

Lengthening the school year, and the hours the children attend is something that should be weighed and considered. It would academically benefit the children because the longer time spent at school will result in the children learning more. Working parents will not be faced with the dilemma of childcare, especially in the long summer months. Also, children would not be left alone in an unsupervised home during parents work hours. Extending the school year will solve these problems. There are more pro's then con's when it comes to year-round, extended hour schools.

Year-Round schools do not take away the summer months breaks they space them out over the calendar year. There are many different ways of making schools year-round and extending the hours. There are also schools that have hours of 800 am-500 pm. Instead of the traditional calendar where students go to school for 180 days with a summer break, there are calendars set up to 0/0, 45/15, and 60/0 (Year-Round Schools May 1). For example "In the 0/0 calendar, … students attend school for 0 days, then are on vacation for 0 days" (Year-Round Schools May 1). There are also multi-track systems, where students are divided up into different tracks. "The tracks rotate in and out of school with one track always on vacation, theoretically enabling a facility to accommodate more students"(Year-Round School May 1). Using year-round schooling can also help in reducing the overcrowding that some schools face.

Year-round schools would reduce the burden of finding childcare for parents who work. Some children are too young to stay at home alone, and must be placed in supervised care. Extending the school year would eliminate the costly expense of childcare, when it comes to the three-month summer break. Childcare expense can then be stretched out over shorter period then over the long summer months. Children should not be placed in daycare, or be at home alone when they can be in school learning. Many parents have also discovered that childcare providers will not accept children after they have reached a certain age. Just because a child reaches a certain age does not necessarily mean they are ready to stay home alone, even if it is only for a few hours until the working parents return home. These parents are left without a choice regarding who will take care of their children while they are at work. Many people do not have family that can help then with childcare. "Our society has changed, often becoming less friendly and more dangerous" (Year-Round Schooling ). Working parents often worry about the safety of their children who are home alone.

Cheap University Papers on Year-Round School

Another problem with families is the dilemma with latchkey children. A latchkey child is one who receives no supervision at home after school hours because their parents are working. The extended school year would keep the kids in a supervised environment. Unsupervised children can fall victim to more dangerous situations, "such as drugs, sex, and violence" (Ellers ). When young children are home alone, they are not always responsible enough to motivate themselves to do homework and stay out of trouble. Even for the most prepared child, a dangerous situation can arise that the child might not be able to handle (Ellers ). There are not enough after-school programs designed to fit all of the different school age children. This makes year-round school with extended hours a better solution for those parents who are still at work when school is dismissed.

Furthermore, students would gain more knowledge with the increased class days. More time can be spent on core courses, which then brings increased learning. Studies mentioned elsewhere have shown that students learn more with increased school time. When vacation time comes around, year-round schools are flexible by letting the family plan according to their needs ("School 1"). Children can take vacations during school hours without missing schoolwork, since it can be made up when they return. Students over the summer vacation loose about a month's worth of learning. It has been found when students miss no more then a month's time they retain more of what they have learned. Taking shorter breaks would prevent that loss from happening. Another advantage with multi-track classes students could then take accelerated classes over the break time if they wanted to or have the choice of going on vacation instead. Michael Sadowski states, "According to the San Diego-based National Association for Year-Round Education, there are now ,460 year-round schools in 41 states"(). The increased in number of year-round schools is a most convincing piece of evidence, this proves the year-round schools work and provide children with a better education. Also, children would be able to get their homework done on school time with the proper instruction. Homework time can be very stressful for parents who do not understand the assignments. This would give the parents more quality family time at night.

Year-Round schooling does not seem to be the answer for everyone. Teachers have the hardest time with loosing the summer break. Without the break they have little or no time to take to prepare for the next lesson. This leaves them feeling overwork and this causes teachers to burnout fast. Teachers would also be unable to attend school themselves to further their education. Another problem teachers would face is without the summer break they lose their second income. Furthermore, the students would not be able to work over the summer time. "With children in school year-round, many businesses loose money and a labor force" (Year-Round Schools May 6). This also prevents students from getting valuable work experience they need. The buildings and furnishing in addition would have to be replaced more frequently due to more wear and tear from excessive use. In California, "it cost Los Angeles $4. million per year to operate their year-round programs" (Year-Round Schools May 5). While this does not seem like a lot of money, some counties just do not have it to spend. Another costly expense that would have to be considered would be putting air conditioning in all the schools for the hot summer months.

In conclusion, parents and students will benefit from year-round extended hour schools. Parents who work would be relieved of additional stress and worries about their children. The children will receive a better education with the extra time in they spend in school. Keeping them in a supervised environment diminishes the risk of children getting into trouble. We can see result of year-round schools with better-educated children who would fulfill the desires of their parents. These small minor problems that the teachers and maintenance experience can be worked out over time. They are a small price to pay for something that will benefit our future with better-educated children.

From 16 up to 17 Australia was involved in the war in Vietnam. Approximately 47000 Australian men and a large amount of women served there. There were a few reasons why Australia fought in the Vietnamese war. Australia's foreign policy in the 150's responded to what appeared to be the download push of aggressive communism in South-East Asia and the need to meet these threats away from Australia. The Korean War had reinforced the sense of a monolithic communist system but had also been a big step in securing a firm alliance for Australia with the great and powerful United States. Australia was obligated to fight along side the United States and every other signatory country of the ANZUS treaty and the Southeast Asia Collective Defense Treaty (SEATO).

In 151, Robert Menzies had suggested that Australians would have to be organized for a war against Soviet communists within three years. That same year in August, compulsory military training and universal conscription were brought forward.

Australia's commitment of troops to the United States and United Nations forces fighting in Korea was a stand against another domino falling to Chinese communism as if moved southwards. The fear of communism wide-ranging the world became an Australian election issue in 14. As an election promise the leader of the Liberal party, Robert Menzies, pledged that he would introduce legislation to outlaw the communist party. The decision to assign troops to the conflict centered on the fear of communism. The opportunity of communism spreading to Australia from Asia was regarded with increasing seriousness as political change came to the region. Australia feared the domino theory, so the decision to send Australian troops to fight in Vietnam was not surprising given the belief that 'the takeover of South Vietnam would be a direct military threat to Australia'.

It was clear that because the United States was involved in this war, Australia would support its great and powerful ally and friend. As Australia had assisted the U.S in the Korean War so, too, it was prepared to become involved in the Vietnam War. Given Australia's military weakness and the potential danger from our nearest neighbor, the very unstable Indonesia, it was in Australia's interests to commit the United States to Asia and the fight against communism. As the British withdrew from its world commitments, the Australian government saw the U.S as the powerful Western nation to take its place. It was Australia's best concern for this to happen, and Australia's role in Vietnam was motivated by this willpower to keep the United States involved in Asia. Many documents about Australian involvement in the war are still unavailable, but enough material has suggested that Australia actively wanted involvement in the conflict. Some historians have suggested that Australia wished to involve the U.S in the struggle against communism, and that Australia's zest for the war may have influenced the U.S government in 164 when they made the choice to increase their military forces in South Vietnam.

Cheap Custom Essays on Australia's invlovement in the vietnamn war.

Led by Robert Menzies, the conventional politicians built a more secure position for Australia in the world 'under the US wing'. The two main alliance agreements establishing Australian security were the ANZUS agreement of 151 and the SEATO treaty of 154. The ANZUS alliance was made up of Australia, New Zealand and the United States. They all agreed to come to one another's aid in the event of attack. The SEATO alliance consisted of the South-East Asia Collective Defense Treaty provided for defensive action to be taken incase of the event of an attack on the United States, Britain, France, Australia, New Zealand, Pakistan, Thailand. South Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos were also assured protection under the treaty's security preparations.

At the end of World War II, a Vietnamese communist leader named Ho Chi Minh claimed Vietnamese independence from the French. It was to take another 0 years before a unified and self-governing Vietnam was established. In an Australia was still wrapped up in the fear of communism, the government's defense strategy was dominated by the idea that sending troops overseas to fight against potential enemies was the best way to prevent a war from taking place on our soil. So it was, that the war associating this Vietnamese struggle for independence involved in Australians. Fighting against communism well beyond Australian borders was called 'forward defense'. It was a policy that many Australians became a critical of as the anti-war movement gained support. The Australian government agreed to the US requests for military advisers to support their presence in the region. Thirty Australian army advisers were sent to South Vietnam in 16.

President Lyndon Baines Johnson, mostly known as L.B.J, arrived in Australia in October 166. As the first American head of state to visit Australia he was given a welcome usually reserved for only the royal. The United States was facing international disapproval for the increase of war in Vietnam and looked to Australia for gestures of support. In 166 the war was the focus of public debate and protest. Many Australians were concerned at our readiness to fall into line with American foreign policy. Later in 166, the Australian people returned the Liberal Party/Country Party coalition government to power with a vast majority of Australians at the federal election. Most Australians were seen to support the war and so the number of troops sent to South Vietnam was once again increased.

The intensity of the disagreement in Australia over involvement in Vietnam, and the issue of conscription, contributed to the election of a Labor government at the end of 17. Twenty-three years of conservative Liberal government had ended. The new Prime Minister, Gough Whitlam, straight away abolished National Service and recalled the Australian Army. Australia's military participation in Vietnam was over. In March 175, the communists launched their Spring Offensive and, in an overpowering victory, took control of South Vietnam in April 175. The longest war of the 0th century had come to an end.

It was tough, but we can say that for all the reasons Australia went to fight in Vietnam they conquered such as, they avoided communism from invading, Australia still remains good allies with the U.S and we are now seen as more dominant.

The word courage is nor easily defined. To some people, courage is seen in everyday acts of bravery. To others, however, courage is a much more complex and profound characteristic.

Having courage means to confront one's fears, and to stand up for one's beliefs, no matter what the circumstance. It is not necessary to be a super-hero in order to be courageous. The simple things that may seem rather easy to do for most people can be quite difficult for others. Getting over one's fear or nervousness takes a great amount of courage, and should be seen as equally important as physical acts of courage or heroism.

Courage is being honest, in all things, to all people, and most importantly to oneself. Courage requires a person to do what they believe is right at all times, even in the midst of its consequences. Acts of courage go unnoticed everyday. The television and radio tell of lives being saved from natural disasters and atrocious people, but fail to mention how much willpower and courage it takes to not be influenced by peer pressures or stresses in life. Courage is a very strong trait to posses, and is a very good indicator of an honest person.

Courage could be defined as unwavering loyalty and dedication to duty, especially in the line of fire. Courage is also accepted as being true to oneself, whether one makes consistent choices or not. Consistent and inconsistent are labels that others will assign to a person, depending on whether they like what they are doing or not. But is it better to be make consistent decisions and be miserable in order to satisfy others? That is a choice each person has to make, as an individual. Some people give and give until they wear themselves out. They are too busy trying to satisfy the needs and demands of others, that they end up losing themselves in the process.

Courage is being loyal to oneself, despite the presence of danger. Courage is having the gull to act upon what one believes in, and not the opinion of a government, religion, family member, or opinion leader.

As you walk down Broadway on a blistering cold winter day, you can't help but feel the pain of the homeless people huddling around barrels of fire trying to stay warm. In New York City there are way to many homeless people. You see many people with torn up clothes and signs begging for money. They need the money to survive and buy food, not the extra stuff we take for granted. That's not fair.

Many people are homeless but it might not be their fault. Some homeless people are lazy and want to be homeless. But the majority of homeless people don't want to be homeless. Do you think that homeless people like having no home and always being hungry?

Many homeless people are people who have been working all their lives and just can't keep up with the expensive rent these days. Also, some people just can't get a job so they have to scavenge around the city to survive. Some are disabled veterans who went to war and when they got back the country they fought for took their homes. When a person can't physically work shouldn't our government help support them?

" Each year, families make up about half the homeless population." Says National Alliance to End Homelessness.

Write my Essay on "Do Homeless People Have Choices?" for me

Many homemakers lost their working husbands and can't pay the rent so they loose their houses and have to live on the streets. After a couple of weeks they use all of their savings and have to scavenge around for food. You might even see one of the homeless mothers looking for food in a garbage can to feed her baby. That's not right. It is not her fault that her husband passed away. She should get a break and get a little house to take care of her family in.

According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture," 4 million people went hungry in 000-including 1 million children."

About eighty-five percent of the homeless population doesn't want to be homeless. The other fifteen percent of the people who don't want to work deserve to be homeless. Those people don't work and all they do is ask working people for their money. Many of them can't get jobs because they are homeless and people see them as dirty and disgusting. They don't want to have to pay taxes. We have to pay taxes and some of our tax money goes to them. That's not fair for working people. We work hard for every dollar we get. Is it fair that hard working people need to pay for the homeless people that don't feel like working but are able to?

Many homeless people don't go to the homeless shelters because of the conditions. You have to share a very small room with three to four families you don't even know. You have to line up in the kitchen hours before it opens or there will not be any food left for you. This country needs a better plan for the homeless people so they have more space and they won't be scared of going to stay at a shelter.

"Every night in the United States, about 750,000 people experience homelessness." Says National Alliance to End Homelessness.

I believe that every person should go volunteer a couple hours of their time each week and help at a shelter. Just think, if everyone, including you, just pitched in a little to help these poor homeless people, what a difference it would make in their and our world.

Business Communication.

Basic communication.

Communicating is something each of us starts practicing and learning since our first cry at birth. We communicate (or attempt to communicate) mostly to satisfy any of our many needs. Communications can be broken up into three categories. Upward - with those in a superior position, downward - with those subordinate and lateral - with our peers. We use one-way communication to share our thoughts and/ or feelings on a topic or to give direction, and two ways to not only share our own thoughts, but to learn the thoughts of our audience as well. We can communicate with individuals and well as with groups of various sizes.

Effective communication guidelines

1. Be clear and accurate.

. Tell your audience you will follow up on anything you may not be able to make clear at that time, then be sure to do just that.

. Tell them what they need to know, make sure they understand it and let them go about their business.

4. Encourage feedback to assist you in knowing your message is properly received and understood.

5. Follow-up to ensure the impact of your message continues to be what you had intended.

6. Put rumours to rest immediately.

Key questions to consider why, what, who, how, where and when.

Why?

It is important to think about why you want to communicate something before you do. This will help establish and pass on the true extent of importance, urgency or any other aspects of the matter being communicated.

What?

This question helps determine the essential details of the subject that is being communicated, as well as the level of feedback needed.

Who?

Identifying your audience.

How?

Many means of communication can be considered one on one meetings, group meetings, mail, e-mail, voicemail, notes, memo¡¦s, presentations, employee newsletters, pamphlets, brochures, flyers, bulletin boards, web sites, video tape, press release, radio, television and print media.

Where?

Appropriate locations for different kinds of audiences and communication subjects.

When?

Timing is everything. More often, however, the quicker you communicate on any matter, the better.

The use of technology in business communications.

Most companies use the same communication infrastructure telephones, e-mail, faxes, bulletin boards, interoffice mail and meetings. In most cases such communications can be very costly and inefficient, considering the time and people involved. Many documents that have to be distributed throughout the company are costly to create, distribute and store.

An electronic information portal can provide access to all of the needed information through the company LAN or WAN via a Web browser within seconds to anyone who has access. No printing, copying or handing out is needed. The portal becomes a central repository for all the documents. If such a portal is well designed and information-secure, it can save employee's time and trouble and their employers a lot of money.

Heart of Darkness contains two layers of narration. The outer narrator is a passenger on the pleasure ship The Nellie, who hears Marlow recount one of his "inconclusive experiences" (1) as a riverboat captain in Africa. This unnamed narrator speaks for not only himself, but also the four other men who listen to Marlow's story. He breaks into Marlow's narrative infrequently; mainly to remark on the audience's reaction to what Marlow is saying. He is omniscient only with respect to himself, since he cannot tell what the others on the boat are thinking. The inner, and main narrator of Heart of Darkness is Marlow. He tells the other passengers of his story "into the heart of darkness" (6) in the first person singular, and the only thoughts the reader has access to are Marlow's.

This novel has two separate settings. The frame narrative is set in London, England, aboard "The Nellie, a cruising yawl, [that had] swung to her anchor without a flutter of the sails, and was at rest" (15). She is anchored in the Thames River, where her passengers wait for the tide to go out. The second setting is that of Marlow's actual tale. In it, he travels first to Company Headquarters in Brussels, then to the Belgian Congo in Africa. Much of the story takes place as Marlow fights his way down the Congo River, deep in the jungle. After accomplishing his mission, Marlow returns to Belgium to visit Kurtz's intended. All of this happens sometime towards the latter part of the 1th century, when imperialism in Africa was at it's highest, and the ivory trade was thriving.

Marlow is a complicated, round, dynamic character in Heart of Darkness. He travels into the Congo to find a man, Kurtz, that he doesn't know, but begins to admire him nonetheless. Marlow comments to his listeners on The Nellie that "The point was in [Kurtz] being a gifted creature, and that of all his gifts the one that stood out pre-eminently, that carried with it a sense of real presence, was his ability to talk, his words the gift of expression, the bewildering, the illuminating, the most exalted and the most contemptible, the pulsating stream of light, or the deceitful flow from the heart of an impenetrable darkness" (7). In this one comment, Marlow reveals much about his character. Although he entered Africa with at least an inkling that imperialism was a positive thing, he quickly learned the truth that it was driven by greed and lust alone. Marlow is torn by that "deceitful flow", because he recognizes what it is, but cannot distance himself from it. At the end, he becomes part of the "deceitful flow" by lying to Kurtz's intended, despite the fact that he had a good motive.

Kurtz is portrayed in Heart of Darkness as a veritable renaissance man. He is not only an excellent writer, painter, poet, and musician, but a world-class orator as well. These skills, along with several guns, are what make the natives worship him. When Marlow asks about Kurtz as he travels to meet him, he is merely told, "Mr Kurtz is a very remarkable person" (7). This may be an understatement, since at that very moment Kurtz was a god to the villagers he sacrificed. Kurtz is a round character, and dynamic as well. He espoused the idealism of imperialism and the pure side of the European presence in Africa, and traveled to the Congo in order to bring civilization and culture to the savages, or whatever it was they thought they were doing. In time, however, the evil that surrounded him made it's way into his heart, and he became worse that anything about imperialism he imposed. Kurtz continually talks about progress, enlightenment, and kindliness in the European presence in Africa. In his actions, however, he murders the natives, steals whatever they have, and allows himself to become their deity. These sides clashing within him are probably what drive him to madness.

The novel 'To Kill A Mockingbird', written by Harper Lee, is set in the mid-10's in Maycomb, a small, isolated, inward looking town in Alabama, USA. The book is mostly dominated by racial prejudice against Negroes. This prejudice, which the southern states conformed, resulted in an American Civil War. The South's economy prospered through selling good like sugar, cotton and tobacco, which were produced by black slaves. The Southern states believed that black were inferior to white. The Northern states, however, did not want this slavery and prejudice to continue. The Northern states won the war and the Southern states had to abolish slavery.

In 'To Kill A Mockingbird' was set 70 years after the Civil War and we can see that the Southern states did not change their attitudes and held onto old values and traditions. The Southern resisted the idea that black people could share social and political equality and continued to support white authority.

In Maycomb there is no equality between the black and white communities. The town's people are so racially prejudice that they have narrow, intolerant, rigid codes of behaviour that they choose to impose on each other. The Negroes live very different and difficult lives. They are regarded as inadequate, just because of the colour of their skin rather that who they are as people. This bigotry is made even more minacious by being depicted as 'normal' behaviour by the citizens. The town's people do not realise their own hypocrisy because prejudice is so entrenched in their every day life.

The black community is segregated from the white society. They are recognised as having their own land and church. The citizens consider Dolphus Raymond as an oddity, because he chooses to live amongst the Negroes, when he is white.

The Negroes are very religious, God fearing, law abiding, good natured, dignified people. After the Civil War the black community were earning money for their work and the all saved up all their money and built themselves a church, to worship and praise their God. A proportion of the white citizens takes advantage of the church and gamble in it when it is not in use for worship. They have no respect for the Negroes or God by gambling in their church. Although the Negroes are treated very badly they never consider rebelling. The only individual from the community who inflicted prejudice against the whites was Lula. When Calpurnia took Jem and Scout to the black church, the men steeped back and took off their hats; the women crossed their arms and made respectful gestures.

The Negroes are not educated. The whites believe that the Negroes do not deserve to be educated. They do not want black children associating with their children because the Negroes are thought to be a bad influence. Out of the whole church only four of the parish are able to read and write. It is ironic that Bob Ewell and family have the opportunity to be educated but do not use it and the Negroes would do anything for the opportunity to be educated.

Without education the Negroes cannot get decent, well paid jobs because they do not have the qualifications compared with the white society. So the whites have priority over the jobs. The type of jobs that the Negroes are offered are the low paid, maybe dangerous jobs which the white community does not wish to undertake. These jobs are domestic servants like Calpurnia, Jesse and Sophie, garbage collectors like Zeebo or cotton pickers like Tom Robinson was when he was younger, until he tore his left arm muscles during the job and is now unable to use his arm. These jobs are all actually considered very respectable for a Negro. By doing these jobs the Negroes are paid a very small amount of money. This is presumably why they live where they do and obey the white citizen's because they do not have the money or power to stand up and do something about the way they are being treated.

The court of law is also swayed and conditioned by prejudice. In the court house the Negroes are, once again, segregated from the whites for the Negroes sat upstairs and the whites sat downstairs. The jury would submit no equality during a trail against a Negro because it consists of prejudice Maycomb town people. The trail of Tom Robinson reveals the depth of prejudice in Maycomb and believes that the black society is essentially inferior. Tom Robinson is clearly innocent of the crime of raping Mayella Ewell. It is also suspected that his accusers are lying but by Tom's own admission, is guilty of daring to feel 'sorry' for a white girl. The white citizens cannot accept such a presumption and therefore produce an unjust decision and verdict. 'When it's a white man's word against a black man's, the white man always wins.'

There is a considerable amount of hypocrisy and prejudice occurring in Maycomb and is seems too idealistic for the racial problems to be solved, but there is still some hope for the future. Citizens such as Boo Radley, Heck Tate, Dolphus Raymond and to some extent Miss Maudie Atkinson do not conform and are against racial prejudice, although they are prosecuted for their decisions. Judge Taylors also unprejudiced and honourable to see that Tom Robinson has a fair trail by appointing Atticus, a very well experienced lawyer, to defend him rather than usually a black man would have a bad, inexperienced lawyer defending him. During the novel Mr Cunningham, a member of the lynch mob, realises to think about others views and that Tom Robinson is a human being to. The children Jem and Scout are not prejudice, therefore they will pass the sense of equality down to their future generations. The children learnt this mainly from their honourable father Atticus, but also from the trail. Atticus is a very unprejudiced man, he was willing to defend tom, even though he knew it would be very difficult for him but he knew he had to do it because it was the correct thing to do. This teaches the children that you must always do what's right no matter what, and that everyone is equal and deserves to be treated equal

What makes people act the way they do? Is it hereditary? Could it be that instinct alone guides people and their behavior? Or is it that people become a product of their environment? The answer can be found in Flannery O'Connor's "A Good Man is Hard to Find". A Grandmother, living with her son and his family, appears to be a manipulative and deceitful old woman. As she and her family take a vacation drive to Florida they stumble across three escaped convicts and are systematically murdered, thanks to Grandmother's deceitful ploy. The driving force behind the Grandmother's deceit is the way the family treats her.

The Grandmother tries to convince Bailey, her son, to change their travel destination from Florida to Tennessee, and is completely ignored. " Here this fellow that calls himself The Misfit is aloose and headed toward Florida…" (45). "… I wouldn't take my children in any direction with a criminal like that aloose in it." (45). "Bailey didn't look up from his reading, so she wheeled around then and faced the children's mother…" (45). As she pleads with the mother, we see that again she is ignored. "You all ought to take them somewhere else for a change so they would see different parts of the world and be broad." (45). " The children's mother didn't seem to hear her…" (45). It is clear that neither adult has any interest in The Grandmother's wants or concerns. Indeed, it seems that they do not even know she exists, not important enough to acknowledge.

In addition to the way Bailey and his wife treat her, The Grandmother has to put up with verbal abuse from her grandchildren. Apparently these children can say whatever they want to their Grandmother, no matter how disrespectful, without any repercussions. The little girl, June Star, says of The Grandmother, " She wouldn't stay home for a million bucks, afraid she'd miss something…" (46). The boy, John Wesley, adds his bit by saying, "Tennessee is just a hillbilly dumping ground…" (47). An indirect insult to the Grandmother who, the book leads us to believe, is from Tennessee. These children, her grandchildren no less, clearly have no respect for The Grandmother. To be treated in such a fashion at that age, by children of their age, has got to be a bitter pill to swallow.

The Grandmother's attempt to deceive her family is a direct result of the family's mistreatment of her. Bailey and his wife clearly are not interested in The Grandmothers opinions or desires, and the children show only disdain, bordering on contempt, when speaking to The Grandmother.

Money, cars, expensive clothing, and extravagant parties; Who would not enjoy a life style like this? For many people this would be a dream come true, but not in the case of James Gats, or better yet Jay Gatsby. In the novel The Great Gatsby, by F. Scott Fitzgerald, Gatsbys real dream is to be with his beloved Daisy. She is the whole reason for his existence, he is deadly obsessed over Daisy. There is a twist to the story though, Daisy has a life already going, she is married and has a child with her husband Tom. Tom is a cheating husband, everyone knows about it, but he gets away with it. Through out the novel Gatsby tries to win the attention and love he so desires from Daisy. In pursuing his dream Gatsby affects and changes his life and life style.

In following his dream Gatsby first off changes his life style and way of being to get closer to Daisy. In doing so, Gatsby becomes obsessed with being closer to her that he behaves in strange manners, for example at one point in the story he is reaching out to a green light. Why on gods green earth would some one spend time reaching out to a light? The green light comes from Daisys home and it represents and symbolizes the distance, the gap between Gatsby and Daisy. He stretched out his arms toward the dark water in a curious way, and as far as I was from him I could have sworn he was trembling involuntarily I glanced seaward -- and distinguished nothing except a single green light, minute and far away, that might have been the end of a dock. (Fitzgerald, 6). The quote states that the green light was far away, just like Daisy was also far away from him. Gatsby, being obsessed over her would spend time reaching for his beloved Daisy. At the time, Daisy did not knot even know that he lived near her. Possibly it had occurred to him that the colossal significance of the light had now vanished forever. Compared to the great distance that has separated him from Daisy it had seemed very near to her, almost touching her, (Fitzgerald, 8). This quote took place at Nicks house while they were having tea, they ended up going to Gatsbys house ; he shows off his house and all his clothes. By this point Gatsby is closer to his dream, it is also mentioned that the significance of the green light vanishes for ever, proving that Gatsby and Daisy are to see each other frequently.

Not only did Gatsby become obsessed in pursuing his dream, but he also became very jaded. Gatsby was very jaded or blinded from the truth, he truly believed that Daisy was a pure and honest person. She was the first nice girl he had ever known, in various unrevealed capacities he had come in contact with such people but always with indiscernible barbed wire between. ( Fitzgerald,155). This quote shows that Gatsby is jaded because he is blinded from to see the real truth about Daisy. In his eyes, Daisy is a person that he may open up to unlike with others where he feels like there is a barbed wire in between, which in reality Daisy doesnt really mind his feelings. In the novel Daisy is always wearing white or is related to white representing innocence or purity. His heart beat faster and faster as Daisys white face came up to his own (Fitzgerald,117). Once again this quote shows that Gatsby believes that Daisy is innocent or pure when in reality she is immoral.

Aside from becoming obsessed and jaded while chasing his dream to be closer to Daisy, Gatsby also showed characteristics of being a driven man. Gatsby is driven to accomplish his dream aswell as to live in the past, where at one point Daisy corresponded to him. I wouldnt ask too much of her, I ventured. You cant repeat the past, cant repeat the past ? He cried incredulously, why of course you can! (Fitzgerald,116). This passage shows Gatsbys desire and also shows that he is driven to turn back the hands of time and make the situation between him and Daisy to what it once was before when Daisy and him were together.

Cruel, Inhumane, and Unacceptable

In order to prevent another holocaust from occurring, American schools must teach it to educate people about the inhumanities that occurred during this time, and informing people about this tragedy depends on witnesses like Elie Wiesel. In educating people about the Holocaust, schools are presenting them with cruel, inhumane, and unacceptable behavior, which they will see and learn not to follow. One reason that the incongruous cruelty of the Holocaust must be taught in schools is because some people believe that it is feasible that the Holocaust never happened. In a survey some results were shocking; "1% of the adults and 17% of the students said that they didn't know whether it was possible the Holocaust ever took place" ("Many Ignorant" A). (CP) These results are completely unacceptable; the percentage for these statistics should be zero. That is why truthful information on the Holocaust must be taught. Another reason that the Holocaust must be taught in schools is because people need to know that the events of the Holocaust were unethical. Eva Kumpfert, a Holocaust survivor, once said, "We have to say the truth...come to terms with it" ("Horror" A). This quote stresses the importance of talking about past events and how important it is to teach other generations how wrong the actions of the Holocaust were. Similarly, education about the Holocaust is important because it teaches people that the Holocaust was inhumane, and that people must not follow similar footsteps. Wiesel expressed this by saying, "No one has suffered like the Jewish people have. No people were exterminated for their being" (Murphy 4). The inhumanities of the Holocaust need to be well displayed so that future generations know that those kinds of actions are morally wrong. Future generations must be informed about the terrible events of the Holocaust, so they acknowledge that it happened, and that the unethical and inhumane ways of the Holocaust are unacceptable.

The terrible events of the Holocaust caused Elie Wiesel to take a self-imposed vow of silence for ten years, but when he told his story to he world, he contributed to the cause of informing people about the Holocaust. (AP) Wiesel, a surviving Holocaust victim, contributes to the cause of informing people about the Holocaust by telling his audience the importance of family even in times where self-preservation seems best. Wiesel said, "My God, Lord of the Universe, give me the strength never to do what Rabbi Eliahou's son has done" (Wiesel 87). Wiesel is asking God to not allow him to abandon his father to increase his own chance of survival, like Rabbi Eliahou's son did. Wiesel did not want the brutality of his surroundings to cause him to be brutal himself. (CP) In addition, Wiesel communicates the painful truth of his struggle with faith and how important it is to always have hope, helping people understand how the Jews were affected as a religious people. Wiesel said, "Never shall I forget those flames which consumed my faith forever" (Wiesel ). Wiesel claims he has completely lost his faith, as shown in this quote, but he truly has not. He prays to God at various times in his book Night. In the end, Wiesel lives and eventually recovers to full health. This shows that people should always have faith. Lastly, Wiesel contributes the emotional reality of the interminable Holocaust. (CX) Wiesel is laconic when he says, "Never shall I forget the little faces of the children, whose bodies I saw turned into wreath of smoke beneath a silent blue sky" (Wiesel ). This quote shows the brutal reality of the Holocaust. It is extremely important for future generations to know what truly happened. For these reasons, schools must teach about the Holocaust to educate people about the truth and the inhumane actions; Wiesel effectively contributes to this education through his speeches and his book, Night.

Chuck, Matt, and I held additional referee training sessions to build on the refs knowledge. One session focused on U6 only and one on U8 only. This was step in the referee development process and focused on the practical application of the refs position on the field, making the calls, blowing the whistle loud & long, The purpose of the application training is to build consistency and confidence in what the refs are doing. We want to move away from the ref who stands, is not engaged with the game, and unsure of making a call.

The expectation is for the ref to know how to work with his/her partner ref on the field, consistency in calls & actions, and understanding how to perform their job by actually doing it in front of peers and adults. We role played the various roles of players, coaches, parents, and of course, refs in game like situations. The refs who attended had great questions and left the sessions with enthusiasm and a better understanding of their job.

Cheap custom writing service can write essays on i don't have one

We also provided each of the attending referees with a laminated cheat sheet with a quick run down of U6 on one side and U8 on the other. The information addresses ball size, # on the field, major fouls, minor fouls, substitutions, etc. This should clarify many of the basics which seem to vary from field to field, coach to coach, and ref to ref.

There are additional laminated sheets in the Field Marshals box, in the bag with the walkie-talkies. (The refs also received training on how to use the walkie-talkie and how to check in with the FM on the w-t.) Over the next several weeks, if you are the FM, please ask the refs checking in if they received a laminated sheet (its a x 4 card) from the training and if they have it with them. If they do not have a card, please give them one. Tell them to have it available at the field when they ref as their reference point.

FYI - Additional SWUSC T-shirts have been ordered to give to the new refs. They should be available in about weeks.

The information that was needed to complete my marketing plan was important information on my sports wear store. The first aspect I had to think about was the purpose of my business. I wanted to sell sports products to people that were interested in buying jerseys, hat, and equipment of their favorite sports team. The second factor I needed to complete this marketing plan was the markets and strategies I used to run my business. I had to think about my current customers and the important characteristics they were looking for in my products, distribution, prices, and promotion. Another important factor I needed when doing my marketing plan was to think about my business environment. When I first opened my sports store, my economy was stable. I worked very hard and my main focus was getting a strong environment for my business. I also needed to analyze my business to complete my marketing plan. The operations I ran my business with, the marketing mix I used, and my competition, and my strengths and weaknesses were all components that were needed to analyze my business. A great deal of information that was needed to complete my marketing plan came from the marketing mix. When I opened my sports wear store, I concentrated a lot in the marketing mix. I wanted to make sure my products were good quality, my distribution method worked smoothly and fast, my prices were low, and my promotion attracted lots of customers. My marketing mix was a way to satisfy and make my customers very happy. The last information I needed to complete my marketing plan was the goals and objectives. My goals and objectives were to make my economy and business a stronger place. I wanted to make sure my Business was successful. The activity that must be completed in developing each of the mix elements is a great amount of information. You have to identify the different possible ways that will make your marketing mix successful. When I first started researching on the products, distribution, price, and promotion I first went to Sports Authority and Champs to gather information on the skills they use in their marketing mix since they have lots of experience. I thought the first thing I would start with is Products. When visiting Sports Authority and Champs I noticed they had much of the same products. They had most of the same hats, jerseys, and equipment. I made sure that when I opened my sports store that I had unique products that any other sports store didn't have. This attracted customers to my store to buy a product that was different and they didn't have. They really liked it because they hadn't seen my products out there in any sports store in the Miami area. The second activity I worked on is finding a way to distribute my products. I gathered information on how Sports Authority and Champs distributed their products and I was amazed. Both sports store distributed their products only by their store. I wanted to have a unique method of distribution. I distributed my products not only by my store but also by orders I received online, by catalog purchasing, and people that were interested and called the 1-800 phone number. My third activity that was needed in developing the mix elements was the prices I would use to sell my sports products. Something very important I discovered when researching in Sports Authority and Champs, was that they had very high prices. When you have high prices that customers can't afford, your economy goes down. That's why when I opened my sports Business, my prices were low. My prices were something that my customers were satisfied with and can afford. I gained customers due to the fact of my low prices. My customers were happy because they were getting better quality for a lower price. Sports Authority and Champs actually lost customers that are coming to my store now. The last activity that I completed in order to develop each of the mix elements is the promotion I needed to attract customers to my store. Sports Authority and Champs do a good job when it comes to promoting their store. They have commercials and billboards in the Highway promoting their store. I had to find a unique and a less expensive way to promote my store. I came up to the conclusion to promote my store in flyers, sports magazines, online sports websites, and in the newspaper. The Activities that were needed to implement each of the mix elements was a lot of time and dedication. I hired a good team of employees that were willing to put their all to making these mix elements the best and successful elements to our business. It took a lot of researching, dedication, time, and effort to make these mix elements as good as possible. Each of my employees is responsible for an activity identified above. I hired 4 employees to help me get these activities accomplished. I took care of the Products Activity. Jose took care of the Pricing activity. Jason took care of the distribution activity. Jerry took care of the promotion activity. And I put Alex to run the operations of the stores, so our economy and environment wouldn't drop. It took us about a month to get these activities done and get our mix elements perfectly running with our business. Everyone worked very hard and got their activity done right. With the help of my team, I was able to have successful mix Elements. Each activity was initiated when me and my team felt comfortable about adding these new mix elements to my business. Until we didn't get the best research and results we wanted, we didn't initiate this activity to my business. When we felt comfortable about initiating these new activities, my business went smoothly and had a big positive affect and change to my business economy and environment. Each activity will be completed when it is successful to our business. Im not willing to risk my business for rushing the activity to be completed. The activity will be completed when me and my employees are comfortable with the new activity being applied to my business. The activities will be coordinated with each other so that each runs smoothly. My product, distribution, price, and promotion will each be coordinated in a successful way. Money will be needed for the activities that will be coordinated to my business. Money is needed to buy the products we plan to have in my sports store. Having high quality products will cost to buy the merchandise. My distribution method also consists of money. We need money to be able to maintain and run our catalog, our website online, and our 1-800 telephone number. Another factor we need money for is our promotion method. To be able to advertise in the sports magazines, newspapers and on websites online, we need to pay the company that's running these promotions, a certain fee. Research is also a resource that will be needed for the activities. Before applying these activities to my company, research is needed so there wouldn't be any failures in my business. The necessary money will be obtained from the sales we have earned from my sports wear store. I will also have a small loan from the bank, which I will pay back little by little. This will help me get the activities accomplished without having to waste too much money earned from sales of my business. I am the person that is going to be preparing and managing the budget. It is my responsibility, as the owner of the sports wear store to be responsible for the budget of theses activities. I know that the budget that I will use will be the right amount. Preparing and managing the budget will be safe and successful in my hands.
