The language of politics is one that is universal to all languages. In 148, George Orwell published an essay entitled Politics and the English Language, which discussed just that. In paragraph 1 of this essay, he claims, "political language…is designed to make lies sound truthful and murder respectable, and to give an appearance of solidarity to pure wind." This is absolutely right, it was in Orwell's time, and it still holds true today, in a time of mass media, corporate influence, and colossal magnitudes of sensationalism. I plan to explain what Orwell meant by "political language" and show how those who misuse it to their advantage can get away with blatantly lying, yet still amassing support of the misled.

Right at the beginning of his essay, Orwell claims civilization to be decadent and therein infers that civilization's language must be decadent as well. This is an interesting point that I did not agree with until I finished the reading. Orwell then goes on to explain, "The decline of a language must ultimately have political and economic causes," which is definitely true. Keep in mind that his essay was written in 146, shortly after World War II had ended, so he is speaking from a time where nearly everyone in the world knew of society's evils. In addition, throughout the essay, Orwell uses exceptionally strong expressions to describe the current state of the English language by using the analogy of a downtrodden individual succumbing to alcoholism, and then referring to the "slovenliness" of Modern English, explicitly written English... However, Orwell also claims that this same slovenliness of the English language can be reversed…

Now in his extremely well written essay, Orwell makes it extremely clear about what needs to be done to preserve proper English in writing. His first step in doing such was to show various examples of what he refers to as "specimens of the English language as it is now habitually written." Interestingly enough, he quotes the work of two of the world's most educated people (he quotes two professors), two miscellaneous publications, and even Karl Marx himself. With these five examples, there are five different things wrong with each. The first example, which is from an essay by Professor Harold Laski, is erroneous in the eyes of Orwell due to its ambiguity and its capability to confuse. The second example is from a writing by Professor Lancelot Hogben, and Orwell mocks this writing in a humorous fashion, by turning the statement around to ridicule it, due to the fact that the word "egregious" is apparently misused. Example number three is from an essay on psychology, and Orwell again takes a sarcastic tone by calling it meaningless. The fourth quote is from Karl Marx's Communist Pamphlet, and Orwell criticizes it for its usage of "stale phrases." Finally, the fifth example of bad English that Orwell cites is from a miscellaneous letter in Tribune and he criticizes it for its use of large words but lack of meaning. The majority of these claims by Orwell are definitely significant, although I think he happens to overreact in the case of Karl Marx's Communist Pamphlet, because it is undoubtedly personal preference that decides what a "stale phrase is.

Orwell specifically combats four vices in writing in his essay. These vices are dying metaphors, operators, pretentious diction (mainly the overuse of foreign phrases), and meaningless words. Dying metaphors are also known as clichs. In both Orwell's opinion and my opinion, these are a blatant form of a lack of creativity, and are sometimes brutally misused. They are serious vices that plague what in many times are excellent pieces of writing or speech, but they just lack flair. Orwell is definitely justified in his argument against these. Operators are phrases consisting of many words that can be replaced by much fewer words. Even the best writers today are guilty of using these, and I actually prefer using some operators, because in my opinion, they can add flair to a piece of writing. Maybe this is because Orwell wrote his essay in 146, and what he was saying about the decadence of the language was true, or it may just be a difference of opinion. Pretentious diction is mainly the overuse of foreign phrases and jargon, which have the capability of misleading and confusing the reader. In most cases, pretentious diction can be avoided easily, but sometimes it is necessary, such as in Karl Marx's Communist Pamphlet. This is why I think Orwell's earlier condemnation of the Communist Pamphlet was unjust and a big excessive. Finally, meaningless words are exactly as they read, meaningless. Orwell explains how many political words are viciously overused to the point where their meaning is lost, which leads to authorities such as the government and the media to mislead and deceive the public by using these words. I fully agree with this point that Orwell brings forth. This is a major way that propaganda works. You can see this taking place today in the media and even in the school system. The blatant overuse of the word "democracy," when they attempt to label the American government as such is a great example. No one defines this word in the same manner, yet everyone uses it. In my opinion, the American government is not a democracy because we currently have a war-mongering president that was not even elected by the people, though the next man may out rightly disagree with me. It is things like this that definitely do ruin the fluidity and effectiveness of words in a language, and preventing this is a great way to prevent such authoritative attempts at deception.

With the process of globalization today, the world is becoming more and more of a global marketplace. With the technological advances in transportation, resulting in possibility of traveling anywhere in the world in a matter of hours, and communication, people can instantly communicate all over the world through telecommunications and the internet. All of this results in constant expansion in every possible direction. Companies are expanding to opposite ends of the globe and individuals are traveling further and more often. In return, this causes intermingling of cultures, many times resulting in much animosity on the part of the natives.

This is not done only by big corporations, whom build huge factories in small villages, that are poverty stricken areas of the world. This is also done in subtle ways where the people may not notice that there is a problem at first. At first it may seem as a blessing, but only after the problem has been brewing for several weeks, months, or years, is when people start to notice it. These problems may cause tensions among the members of a community or between the two different groups of people. Many times when it involves a big corporation invading small communities with its big factories, it completely alters the natives' way of life. The encroachment on one culture over the other isn't always as direct. The globalization of the world also encourages drug trafficking and other illegal activities. This results in small, third world country communities changing their means of support to supply the demand of the of the modernized world.

The tribe in Africa that the class watched the film about, was a group of hunters and gatherers for hundreds of years. This group of people managed to survive for hundreds of years using only their own system of living. This group had no idea of the notion of money. There was no sense of individuality. The community worked and lived together as a whole; whatever one person had, they shared with the rest of the community. When a child was raised, it was raised by everybody. This is how they lived and were able to survive for hundreds of years, even with the land on which they lived was being dramatically reduced in size by the world. Nevertheless, with no other choice, the tribe gradually started adapting to the world around them.

As time progressed, a change in their way of life was noticeable. It is noticed that individuals started wearing button-down shirts and slacks as opposed to the pieces of cloth they used to wrap themselves in. This didn't particularly cause a problem, but the simple horse did. In the beginning, the hunters of the group would set out on foot for days at a time to hunt down one giraffe. It was difficult and tiresome work. On occasions it would take days at a time just to track down a single giraffe. When they were introduced to the horse, it made hunting much easier than it was before. Hunting down a giraffe would take a much shorter period of time and would require fewer hunters to go out at one time, making life easier for them. The down side to this was that they were hunting so many giraffes now that it was a possibility that they were going to starve since all the giraffes in the area were being killed.

How are your neighbors with you? You are lucky if they treat you as a member of their family, but what about if it is the contrary? What about if they treat you as a thing not as a human? If this is your situation, I know how you are feeling. I know it because I am living this kind of life. In other words, I do not get along with my neighbors. From the day I moved into my house, I have had to deal with their unfriendly, dirty, and noisy way of living.

First of all, my neighbors are very unfriendly people, and that is why they are hated. For example, during the day when I see them, they do not say hello to me. Sometimes, I try to have a conversation with them, but they always ignore me or give me a cold look. Since the day they ignore me, I began to hate them for being the way they are. In addition, my neighbors are not only mean with me, but with my children, too. Sometimes, when they are playing in front of their house, my neighbors come out and tell them to leave using a filthy language that scare my children.

Second, the awful thing is not only that my neighbors are unfriendly, but they are dirty, too. For example, during the week, they often throw their trash in front of my house. Although, whenever I see it, I always clean it, but later they throw more. They are irresponsible people who do not care about others around them. Moreover, their yard looks like a jungle with empty cans and bottles and other trash among the big grass that is growing. Why do not they care about it? How lazy they are!

Finally, the other thing that makes my neighbors mean, besides being unfriendly and dirty, is that they are very noisy. They have three children and the smallest, the baby, is the one that makes all the noise during the day. He is always crying because he is hungry or because he wants something. Why do not his parents try to lull him? Besides the baby, they also have one big dog that barks all the time. For example, the other day I was going to study, but then it began to bark, and thanks to its harmful noise, I could not concentrate on what I was doing. Moreover, every weekend, they are always having a party at their house. So the loud music and the strange noises from the drunken people begin at noon and end at midnight.

Management Functions

Management Functions

The management functions of planning, organizing, leading, and controlling play a very important role in my business. They are apart of the organization as a whole, they participate in the supervisory functions of my employees, and they also are a very increment part of my role of owner/operator of the organization. These functions help my small tax service grow with the clients for success; in addition they help prepare the organization for decreased activities for the year. In this paper I will describe each of these functions within the organization, the supervisory, and my position within the organization.

The four functions of management within the organization as a whole, and in my role as owner/operator/supervisor, play a very important part of my organization. The planning function helps my organization plan for success and failure. Planning the actual functions of the business is crucial for my company. There are many tax service centers in my area and the goal of my company is to offer the clients not only the service of preparing their taxes but to help them understand their taxes. In addition, I have noticed that there are significant amounts of people that don't really have a grasp on the importance of understanding their taxes. My companies niche in this business it to actually talk to the clients, many of them have complained that they go to file their taxes and it takes ten minutes to do them. Initially, the company had to be prepared for success or failure. I had to make sure that the goals of the company were not compromised during the initial start up.

Planning and organizing are very close together in my company. For example, we have to plan for busy days and slow days. This function then refers to organizing how to handle both. As we are a small organization, when we had over 100 people here in one day, I had to plan to take care of all of their needs with my team of employees. We came up with a plan to service all of them in a timely fashion. We all had a meeting to plan for this before hand, just in case, during the meeting we decided to handle them as if it was rush hour at McDonalds. Sounds silly but it worked. We had someone greeting them, someone reviewing their information and documenting it, then we had another person asking questions and documenting it, then we had someone imputing the information, and someone else was catching the papers from the printer and organizing them, then we had another person reviewing the information with the client and they all signed the papers. Planning and organizing this was essential, it has made my team perform in the most efficient manor without compromising the goals of the company.

In my company everyone is a leader. They are all trained to handle the office without anyone here. This is very important considering the amount of clientele we received this year. Every morning we have a meeting during the busy time of the year, and when it subsides the meetings are once a month. In my company everyone has input on the best ways to handle the day. We would consider the clients needs as well as our own. This flexibility in my employees empowered them to be creative, and critical thinkers. The morale was very high this year; I think it is because everyone was considered a team member.

Controlling, is my function, I measure performance of the employees by many factors. Basically it is by the customer's opinion, productivity, not by a quota but the quality of their work. I also measure them on their knowledge, if the client asks a question I need them to be able to answer the question in a way that is understandable to the client. This measurement also contains that if they are unable to answer the question, how they inform the clients that they dont know the answer. I think this is the best way to measure their performance since my business is basically a service-based business.

Some employees do become frazzled if they are monitored continuously. I have to encourage morale everyday with my team of employees. They get discouraged allot because I monitor all the papers before it is transmitted or sent to the IRS just to be safe. I have to reassure them that it is not just their quality being monitored but the monitoring of the programs that we use is also a priority. These performance reviews are a motivation key point; I would also give out bonuses to them, on how well the performance was. Communication is a priority in my company not only with the team but also with the clientele. Since the team structure is different then if you were to go to another tax service. I have mine set up like an assembly line. Everyone works on the tax return. Each day everyones roles change. It sounds silly but it works.

In conclusion, the functions of planning, organizing, leading, and controlling all work together within the organization. These functions are utilized everyday from team members to my position of supervisor/owner/operator. I hold the success of my small tax service to the utilization of these functions routinely during the daily functions of my business.

"BORDERS"

Physical and psychological borders do intend to have an influence on the society in many different ways. Some times they affects the living style, people mind, economically and hatred to the other people. The following points would complete my argument.

There always have been in a imaginary borders between Old generation and new generation. Though they are from the same culture, society, race, nation and religion, differences could be visible in different generations. e.g. Liking of music; old generation might like solo while new generation could prefer rock. Old generation might like big Old jeneration think they have more experience where as new generation believe they have new ways to do thing . Old generation might give importance to family values while someone younger might value more to entertainment. In the « WHO SHALL LEAD NATION? THE YOUNG OR THE OLD? « article show the boundry and separation between old and new generation. This article potrays the conflict should there be a young or old one to run the nation. This article illustrate that young politicians believes that they have more ideas and activeness where as old politicians thinks they have more experience. This conflict between the old and new generation shows the invislibe boreder which has been for a long time. The imaginary borer between old and young people is affects politics, which explains that our socity have influence of seperation between old and new generation. My second point is that borders between countries intend to have negative influence on the socity because of the driving force of the religion between them. For instnce the border and relation ship between India and pakistan. As we know before 1947 India and Pakistan was a single country struggling to get liberation from british colony.Because of the vision of the politicians of that time two countries surfaced on the world's map. From the very beginning because of a disputed territory "Kashmir" most of the resources of both the countries were and are used on defense (like nuclear bombs). All those resources wasted during 50 last years could have been used for the well being of millions of hungry and dying people. These both countries don't forget about a piece of land because of their different religion. The boder between two countries had destroys the socitey because the government had spended all the money on Kashmir or any other fights between them. There fore lilltle amount money is left for country it self which cause the poverty, poor education, bad health car system and other major problems. The third point of my argument is an imaginary boundy between Rich and poor. Though it should not be but the fact of the matter is that we classified people with their status/position/wealth. It's human phyco to socialize with people of same stature. Rich do not like to mix with poor. They make friends with other rich people. This creates inferiority complex in less fortunate people. For instance in india there are different schools for rich and poor kids. This fact shows that in some countries there is difference in every thing for rich and poor. This is a border which has been there and affects the society living styles( for instance the education, clothing, food and other neccessay things)

The above points have proven that physical and pysicological boders do affect on the society in many different ways.

Silence had captured the room full of audience as I approached the stage. It was the first time I had to speak in front of thousands of people coming from different backgrounds. Friends and family members cheered my name as i pulled out the piece of paper from my folder---the paper in which I had exrpressed all my talent, the paper in which I had written my very first poem. Nervousness gripped every nerve inside my body, and I closed my eyes to think about the moments I had spent prior to this special moment.

It was only a couple of months ago when I went on the internet to pass some time. I had come across a site in which a poetry contest was being advertised. I signed up to enter in this poetry contest, not knowing what luck would bring me.

During those days, things ewre not going too well for me. I had lost my job, and found myself heartbroken and over burdened by college expenses. Anywhere I looked, I saw more expenses. I registered myself for this poetry contest, hoping I would win and put an end to all my financial worries. One day as I was coming back from college, I saw a stack of papers on my bed. I approached them to find the most shocking news of my life! I had been invited to join thousands of other poets from all over the world to share my poem.

I suddenly opened my eyes and found myself lost amongst the thousands of people waiting to hear the first words come out of my mouth. Gradually, I spoke the very first words of my poem. Afterwards, many other contestants came up on stage, and finally the judges got on to announce the winner. To my surprise he announced my name! I had won the poetry contest

Terrifying Love Why Battered Women Kill and How Society Responds is a disturbing book based on true stories and trials of women who have been brutally beaten and abused, verbally, sexually, physically, and emotionally. This book is written by Lenore E. Walker. She is a psychologist who has testified as an expert witness in the trials in the book where women have murdered their abusive husbands or boyfriends. The book exposes the extent of domestic abuse, and how society and the system respond to the actions caused by this abuse.

The book is divided into three sections which all combined contain fifteen chapters. The first section of the book is called "Cheating Their Destinies". This section explains how the battering cycle can begin and explains that many of these terrified women kill their abusers to avoid being killed themselves. It explains how helpless these abused women can become to avoid being beaten or killed. They give into these men until they cannot take the abuse anymore, and out of fear or self-defense kill their men. This is all illustrated in the second chapter, which is titled "Joyce Hawthorne's Story". This was a story about a woman named Joyce and her husband, Aubrey, who abused her as well as her five children. Joyce often felt she had to "walk on eggshells" and never knew what Aubrey was going to do next. Nothing she ever did seemed to please him. Sometimes Aubrey beat Joyce so bad she needed medical attention. Joyce was too ashamed to go to the doctor and show people what he had done to her. She felt incapable of leaving him. One night she sensed a feeling that this was going to be the night he was going to kill her. She loaded a handgun and put it on her nightstand out of fear. Later on Aubrey woke up and demanded sex from her. She refused, and Aubrey reached for a gun, and then Joyce's mind went blank. The next time her mind was clear, there was Aubrey dead, stretched out across the bed with nine bullets in his body.

Joyce's incident becomes a bit clearer to how and why it all happened when reading the second section, which is titled "Why Battered women Kill". This part of the book explains more about these women, who they are, and why they kill. Lenore Walker's personal experience helps identify these women and try to explain society how they fit a certain profile and what usually happens to them. First, she profiles all her clients to see what state they were in when they committed these acts of violence. Lenore states, "Battered women come from all types of economic, cultural, religious, and racial backgrounds. They are millionaires, and they are women on welfare; they are uneducated women, and they are practicing professionals with J.D.s and Ph.D.s; they are mothers, and they are childless; they are religious, they are atheists; they live in rural areas, and in cities, and in small towns all over the country and all over the world. They are women like you. Like me. Like those whom you know and love."(Pg 101) However, Lenore explains that battered women have certain characteristics that separate them from others. They have poor self-esteem; they behave in stereotyped traditional ways in order to please their batterer. They may also feel that they are at fault for not stopping the batterer's violent behavior. They deal with a great amount of violence and guilt. As a result of all these factors, they are very susceptible to depression, isolation, and many even believe maybe they can change the batterer's behavior if they love him enough. One of the most interesting chapters in this section is titled "Crazy Ladies". This chapter attempts to describe more why a woman kills. Many times when these women go on trial they will be judged as insane. However, Lenore tries to explain that most battered women who kill do so in defense, not because they are mentally disordered. Lenore believes that "the expert witness who can provide judges and juries with a genuine understanding of this fact can have a critical role in changing our criminal justice system's inadequate response to the entire problem." (Pg 16) Many actions that a woman makes actually have a purpose and logic when viewed within the context of the violence and terror in which she lives. The problem is many diagnosis of mental illness delivered by uninformed medical personnel and mental health professionals are often wrong.

The third and final section of this book is titled "The Law". This section describes why women have such a hard time being heard and understood in the system. One of the reasons women do not have such a strong voice that many people will listen to is because how power is divided among people in America. Power in America is directly related to gender, class, race, age, education, and socioeconomic status. In most of these respects, men have a distinct advantage over women. Many few judges in our male identified, male dominated courts are sensitized to women issues. Women are viewed in our society as people who are not supposed to kill, use violence, or even defend themselves against a potentially fatal attack. This is one reason why Lenore provides a strong defense for these women as an expert witness. It is an important thing for society to understand why these women do this and how to fix the system to try these women different than any other murder trial. The book ends almost as a closing to one of the first chapters and is titled "Joyce Hawthorne Today". After three murder trails, each where Joyce was allowed out on bail with appeals, went on for a long nine years. Finally, on the fourth appeal her lawyer was able to get a new trial based on the fact that in the previous trials there was judicial misconduct and that an expert witness, who was Lenore, was not allowed to go on trial. Her case was dismissed and after nine years, she was finally free.

Affirmative action is a policy to encourage equal opportunity and to level the playing field for groups of people who have been and are discriminated against (Stein, Martinez, Tashiro). The term affirmative action is applied to the use of racial, ethnic, or gender preferences set apart a variety of social benefits. Treating people differently because of the color of their skin use to be called discrimination, but today it's called affirmative action. "Affirmative action" is applied to a variety of federal, state and private sector programs aimed at achieving racial and gender diversity in the workforce and in education. It is surrounded by misconceptions, which its opponents find easy to exploit.

Affirmative action can be traced back to the Civil Rights Act of 1964. On September 24, 1965, the executive order number 11246 required that federal contractors "take affirmative action to ensure that applicants are employed, and that employees are treated during employment, without regard to their race, color, religion, sex, or national origin" (www.now.org). Employers are being asked to hire less qualified worker and sometimes for more money too. It barred discrimination in a wide variety of private and public settings. Title II of the Act prohibited discrimination in privately owned facilities opened to the public. Title VI outlawed discrimination in federally funded programs. Also, Title VII prohibited discrimination by both private and public employers. In the beginning, affirmative action amide to get rid of racial imbalance in hiring policies. The goals were later extended to include college admissions and the awarding of government contracts. Affirmative action has been a much-debated issue throughout the years.

Affirmative action today, is considered to be one of the most controversial dilemmas facing our equal status of individual rights. As we all know, affirmative action was implemented with the idea and hope that America would finally become truly equal. So far, it has lasted for thirty years and had not solved any of our current problems concerning equal rights – it made things worse. It was created with the intention of using reverse discrimination to solve the problem of discrimination. In that, minority groups are being chosen over the qualifications of other workers. This intention creates a mainstream of problems.

Some find it very unfair in using its practices, some find it very helpful. The portion of the group that stands with affirmative action, are usually in a situation in which they actually benefited from it. They have their reasons as to why they support the action. Based on the general public as to why they acknowledge affirmative action is usually based of the fact that it establishes a situation where equal opportunity is distributed among minorities for jobs. Prior to affirmative action – city, state, and government jobs were almost completely closed off to minorities and women (www.dol.gov). In our present day, minorities and women have gained a tremendous increase in the application of jobs in those workplaces. Unlike the days before affirmative action, where job opportunity was mostly given to the Americans, now jobs are being given to minorities and women due to the quota system. Suppose that an American male and a minority (Hispanic, Afro-American, woman, etc.) are applying for the same job, the American male is much more qualified than the minority.

The process of framing the Constitution was a complex process with favorable agreement as well as opposition due to personal bias. Many men connected in the framing and adoption of the Constitution. These men with varied backgrounds and economic interests came together to generate and shape laws, which were beneficial to their interests, whether immediately or in the long run. There are many views as to what the motivations of the Founding Fathers were; this can be examined with a study of "The Founding Fathers," by John P. Roche, and "Framing the Constitution," by Charles A. Beard. In these works there are two different views expressed as to what the motivations of the founding fathers were.

Political scientist John P. Roche asserts that the Founding Fathers were not only revolutionaries but also superb democratic politicians who created a Constitution that supported the needs of the nation and at the same time was acceptable to the people. Roche saw the Constitutional Convention as a Democratic Reform Caucus. He believed the principles of the Constitution were based on political tradeoffs among state interests. His reasoning behind this was that the framers were all nationalists, and, therefore, they were ideologically similar. They just had to compromise to form a document that would be acceptable to present to their constituents. The Convention itself is the greatest example of compromise in the creation of the Constitution. Some other more specific compromises were the Connecticut Compromise and the Three Fifths Compromise. In his essay, Roche goes into great detail explaining every event leading up to these compromises. This was necessary in order to provide background evidence to support his thesis. In broader terms, the Connecticut Plan was basically a joining of the Virginia Plan and the New Jersey Plan to form an acceptable means of representation to better suit each individual state.

"The Virginia Plan may therefore be considered, in ideological terms, as the delegates' Utopia…many of those present began to have second thoughts. After all, they were not residents of Utopia or guardians in Plato's Republic who could simply impose a philosophical ideal on subordinate strata of the population. They were practical politicians…they had to take home an acceptable package and defend it." (Roche 18)

This refers directly back to the part of Roche's thesis, where he claims that the Founding Fathers were political nationalists trying to keep their individualistic, states' rights constituents happy. Roche did an excellent job supporting the thesis with explicit details and quotations from the Constitutional Convention.

Do my essay on Motivations of the Founding Fathers CHEAP !

On the contrary to Roche, Charles A. Beard believed that the Constitutional framers were an economic elite out to protect their own property against popular majorities. Charles Beard presents evidence that the framers of the Constitution were less interested in furthering democratic principles than in protecting private property and the interests of the wealthy class. Beard supports this argument by mentioning that the framers were an elite consisting of landholders, creditors, merchants, lawyers, and public bondholders. The basis of Beard's argument is that there is a split in the values of the Constitution and those of the Declaration of Independence. Beard tries to prove that the spirit of the Revolution helped to create the Articles of Confederation. He then goes on to say that the Revolutionists were not generally men of property and wealth, and therefore they did not believe that a strong central government would be necessary to protect their interests. On the other hand, the framers of the Constitution were in favor of a strong central government where property interests would be protected. Beard basically uses secondary evidence to support his ideas. He just asserts the fact that most Revolutionists were poor and pure of heart, and then applies the fact that most of the Constitutional framers were wealthy. In order to try and prove his point that the backgrounds of the Constitution were based on gaining and preserving wealth; however, this is all circumstantial, and the motivations of the Founding Fathers cannot be accurately determined based solely on their economic state. This is why it is felt that Beard's argument is somewhat shaky in its foundations.

The motivations of the founding fathers are expressed as different in these two works. John Roche believed that the Founding Fathers were a group of brilliant politicians who crafted a document based on democratic ideas through compromise to govern this fine nation. On the other hand, Charles Beard denounced this idealistic approach of Roche and claimed that there were more personal monetary motivations behind this document. The argument of Roach is presented more clearly with explicit details and direct quotes from the Constitutional Convention; whereas, Beard uses facts but presents more secondary evidence based on the assumption that because the framers were wealthy, their impetus was wealth. Therefore, Roche's argument is more substantial, but yet both viewpoints can still be upheld.

Today, several different countries around the world suffer from poverty. Suffering from the lack of food, shelter, and medical care, many of them are nearing death more and more each day. These countries are in desperate need of some type of aid. The richer nations, such as the United States, Britain, and Australia, are currently pursing ways to rescue these unfortunate countries from their despair (Singer, 57). We, citizens of our country, can also help in giving aid. The big question upon minds is, "How much should we give?" There are different views upon giving to other countries. There are the people who believe everyone should give as much as they possibly can, until they have no more than anyone else (Singer, 61). In opposition to that, there are also the people who believe they should give something, but not so much as to where they cause themselves to fall into the "poverty" category as well (Hardin, 68).

Peter Singer's, "Famine, Affluence, and Morality," brings to mind views of wanting everyone to give away money and material objects that they do not necessarily need, but want. These luxury items may include things such as new clothes or a new car. He believes people should give away the money they use on luxury items to the needy (Singer, 61). I do not agree with him at all. My views on the poverty issue differ greatly from Singer's.

If everyone in the United States, for example, gave everything until they had no more than the people already suffering, we would do nothing but deteriorate over time. As years pass, we would need aid for ourselves. I am not saying we should not give at all. I strongly believe it is right to help those in need. I do not think it is right to overload them with aid. If the richer nations continue to give and give and give, the poor nations will never learn how to provide for themselves. The Chinese have a proverb that states, "Give a man a fish and he will eat for a day. Teach a man to fish and he will eat for the rest of his days." If the richer nations applied this proverb to helping the poor countries, progresses in poverty might occur (Singer, 74).

As with all views on different subjects, the issue on poverty can create disputes between different organizations, countries, and even the average people. Which choice for helping the poor should we follow? It is up to each individual of every country. It is always important to take into consideration the causes and effects that the decision may have upon the future. We want to make sure our children do not starve or run around homeless. Now is the time to put a stop to that, so just how much is too much to give? The answer is simple. It varies from person to person, family to family. Depending upon how much income a person or family takes in would result in how much they can give without causing their own debt and suffering. This reasoning seems to be the only logical one out there.

The United States was right to get involved in WWI. We had interests in Europe that were being endangered by the consistent fighting, including economic interests and many felt a tie to Britain. These facts, as well as the brutality that the Germans were using against innocent people, pushed the United States into the war.

The United States had strong economic ties with the Allies. American trade with Britain and France was more than double its trade with Germany before the war. The Allies swamped American manufacturers with orders for supplies like dynamites, cannon powder, submarines, copper wire and tubing, and armored cars, making trade with the Allies be even more profitable than trade with Germany. And while America shipped millions of dollars worth of supplies, the orders kept coming, and the American economy boomed, and in 115 a work shortage had begun as well.

The Germans were also fighting brutally, attacking civilians, destroying villages, cathedrals, libraries, and even hospitals, stirring up American sympathy. The Germans also sank many ships heading towards Allie countries with their U-boats. When they sunk the British liner the Lusitania on May 7, 115, and killed 18 Americans that were on board, America was outraged, and public opinion swerved away from them. The Germans continued to sink passenger ships, and when the Zimmerman Telegram (a telegram from Germany proposing Mexico form an alliance with Germany, saying that Germany would help Mexico take back land in Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona) Americans were outraged, and it wasn?t long before the United States rightfully declared war on Germany.

It is in my opinion, that the Germans had it coming. We had every right to become angry at them for bombing innocent passenger ships. And to make matters worse, when they sunk the Lusitania they tried to defend their actions by saying that the ship had ammunition on it. If the United States hadn?t gone into the war, the economy wouldn?t have boomed as much either. Even though the Allies orders were keeping American factories busy, once we joined the war ourselves, we had to make even more weapons for our own soldiers. All in all, it?s a good thing we got involved.

In James Hurst's "The Scarlet Ibis," a young boy is killed by pride. The narrator in this story has a younger brother with disabilities no one can change. The narrator tries to help Doodle to walk but for all the wrong reasons. The narrator's self-absorption pushes Doodle to the braking point and the narrator feels completely guilty of the crime he has committed. Although he did a great favor for Doodle, the reader is lead to believe that the death of Doodle was the narrator's entire fault.

When the reader begins this short story they see that having a high pride level is a priority in the narrator's life. When Doodle was first born the narrator did not even want to touch him. He was highly embarrassed in the fact that his brother had a problem and he did not want to admit to it. Pride makes the narrator feel that his brother is useless and unimportant. When the narrator begins to try to help Doodle it is all for the wrong reasons. These reasons being that he wants to have pride in his family and not be embarrassed by them. Pride in this story makes the reader feel that the narrator is a moron in not accepting people for who they are.

The reader also observes that the narrator is self-centered. When the narrator brings Doodle places in his wagon he lets him fall out and the narrator does not even care. He makes Doodle feel like less of a person. He daunts Doodle with the coffin made at his birth to make Doodle feel like no one believed he would make it very long. When the narrator begins to help Doodle he does not do it for the sake of Doodle. The narrator does not want to go to school having to carry his brother around watching him all day long and not having fun for himself. The narrator feels very burdened down by Doodle. He feels that Doodle was place on the Earth only to stop the narrator from doing anything he wants to do.

When the narrator tells his family what he has done, he feels very guilty about why he did it. He did not feel bad for helping Doodle, but he did not believe anymore in the reasons he did it. He begins to feel love for his brother, but he also feels anger. He begins to push his brother farther than ever to get ready for school. A storm comes one day when they were practicing. They begin to run home and the narrator runs faster. Although Doodle could not keep up he tries his best, but he could not do it. He collapses on the ground and dies. The narrator then feels like his brother's death was his unabridged fault.

Write my Essay on A Portrait of a Young Boy for me

In this story, pride, self-centeredness, and guilt killed a little bit of everyone. Although the reader my think the narrator killed his brother, some people would have a argument for that. Speaking in opinion, living for a short time and doing something no one thought was possible is better than living forever and doing nothing. When Doodle dies, it is almost like a piece of the narrator dies with Doodle.

The nuclear unit provided the husband and wife with clear gender roles.

Michael Anderson provides evidence that weakening kinship ties may have been strengthened with industrialisation. With more communication methods and work opportunities. He used data from the 1851 census in Preston. He found that % of households contained kin other than the nuclear family. The bulk of co-residence occurred among the poor possibly due to migration and poverty. He states If we are to understand variations and changes in patterns of kinship relationships, the only worthwhile approach is consciously and explicitly to investigate the manifold advantages and disadvantages that any actor can obtain from maintaining one relational pattern rather than another.

Rosser and Harris (165) studied people who lived in nuclear families but still remained in close contact with kin. Like Anderson studied kinship ties. The survey they conducted showed contacts were predominantly with parents and siblings. Ties maintained with visits, telephone calls and letters.

Before industrialisation the vast majority of families in pre-industrial England were nuclear families. This was concluded by peter Laslett's research.

Buy cheap ict term paper

The research shows that families before industrialisation were not all mainly extended. The research also points at the fact that industrialisation seems to have increased in the importance of the extended family, with kinship ties. and extended family ties are still as important today even in isolated nuclear families.

After industrialisation research about extended families clearly demonstrates the existence of extended family structures in industrial societies. Easier communication and transport methods make extended families closer.

With the rise of welfare systems, schooling, and other features related to modernization, the modern family now has to fulfill fewer functions for its members.

The Priam Painter's Hydria, in the Elvehjem Museum of Art (Madison 68.14.1), shows a narrative of the deification of Herakles that maintains the classic version of the myth in the sense that Athena drives a chariot which brings Herakles to the realm of immortality, but insinuates the process was perhaps more peaceful and more simplistic than did other painters contemporary with the Priam painter.

Herakles stands at the flanks of the horses, recognizable by the lion's skin on his shoulders and its jaws he wears on his head. Athena, to his left, will command the chariot once their travels begin; she wears her archetypical helmet; and Hermes is engaged in conversation with Herakles, wearing a "traveler's helmet" and carrying his staff. At the horses' heads hides a female figure, presumably of no more significance than a groom or a servant.

Clearly Herakles and Hermes are talking; Athena looks ahead, over the horses' ears, seemingly aloof to the conversation. That Athena is the charioteer is indisputable, as is the fact that Herakles is beside her. Their adornments are perfectly typical in the tradition of characteristic pieces associated with the goddess and the hero/to-be god. Thus, to an ancient viewer who had not been instructed that the vase depicted the apotheosis of Herakles, unless there existed another story in the oral tradition that Herakles was to ride behind Athena as Charioteer, the vase would have been instantly recognized as the myth the Priam painter intended. However, had I seen this vase without prior instruction as to its intention, I could have distinguished Athena and Herakles but probably not Hermes; I could see the intentions of Herakles to ride with Athena but be utterly clueless as to where they were going. There is no indication of Mount Olympus anywhere in the scene, so we don't know where they are going; the chariot is stopped, so we wouldn't know if the chariot has ended from its journey or is about to depart.

Furthermore, the scene on the vase isn't at all consistent with the account of the apotheosis of Herakles by Apollodorus, which states simply that "while the pyre was burning, it is said that a cloud passed under Hercules (Roman) and with a peal of thunder wafted him up to heaven. Thereafter he obtained immortality . . ." (Apollodorus, Library). The chariot is conspicuously absent, as are both Athena and Hermes. This is possible for several reasons did the transport of Herakles to Mt. Olympus by Athena, as a charioteer, fade out of oral tradition by the time of Apollodorus' writing? Can art scenes show divine interactions that could not be constructed in oral tradition or writing?

Absent from the vase by the Priam painter are key elements of Apollodorus' account of the ascent to Mount Olympus, namely the characters and events leading up to the near-death of Herakles. Obviously the scene is intended to display only a small portion of the myth, one not even touched on by Apollodorus.

What is striking about this scene, especially compared to other vase painting depictions of the apotheosis of Herakles, is that the human and/or god-figures appear calm and relaxed, while the horses appear tense and unnerved. In Munich 60, for instance, while Herakles and Athena are calm and collected, the scene is much more suspenseful Athena is driving the horses in the air, and Herakles is now riding with her instead of standing at their flanks; below is the burning pyre, and what have been described in Perseus as two nymphs are rushing forward to put out the flames. To their left and below the chariot are what Perseus calls "Silens," two nude men. One of them is peering into the flames and the other appears panicked, backing away. An alternative interpretation might suggest a sort of arm conflict between the Silens, which is not described in Perseus but sort of appears as such on the vase. While Herakles is not wearing his lion's skin and jaw helmet in this scene, making it more difficult for us to identify him, the rest of the action incontrovertibly describes the myth in a much more parallel fashion to that of Apollodorus. Perseus dates this vase to the classical period, and the one by the Priam painter to the archaic, which gives evidence that with time the myth may have changed and the narrative in the vase by the Priam painter follows a more dated storyline, which explains its lack of consistency with the tale told by Apollodorus. The vase from the Louvre in Paris, F 0, depicts another scene of the same myth here, Herakles is shown, with Poseidon, Hermes, and Athena, actually entering Mt. Olympus and the realm of the immortals. The characters are recognized by their adornments; Athena, for instance, is painted snow-white and carries her characteristic shield. To the left of Athena are Poseidon and Hermes respectively; to her right is Herakles, as though being introduced to a sort of hierarchy of deities. The scene is quite different from the two chariot scenes from Munich and Madison, obviously because it depicts another aspect of the same narrative. The mood to this painting is rejoiceful, a vivid contrast from both previous chariot scenes.

After comparison with these vases, the Priam painter's Hydria seems simple and vague. The artist seems to have left much of the myth, which was probably still in a very formative period in archaic Greece, open to the viewer's interpretation.

1. Paramount was a takeover target for a variety of reasons. Paramount was one of only two majors" that was not already a part of a larger media empire that had extensive content production and distribution capabilities. Viacom could combine Paramount's content with its distribution to better compete with the other majors. In addition, based on comparable company multiple analysis and stand-alone discounted cash flow analysis, it appears that Paramount was also relatively inexpensive for its portfolio of assets.

. Viacom would clearly make a better fit for Paramount because of the complementary lines of business. Viacom had content (such as Beavis and Butthead) that could use the creative talents at Paramount. In addition, Viacom could take advantage of Paramount's content library and distribute it through its cable and network television outlets. QVC on the other hand, had very little to offer Paramount shareholders except the talents of Barry Diller. While Diller might be a better manager for Paramount, that does not justify a takeover attempt. Martin Davis would obviously prefer to merge with Viacom, as he has clashed with Diller in the past.

. If Viacom bought Paramount, costs would decrease by eliminating some of the overlap in the businesses and utilizing the distribution at cost. Paramount's growth rate would likely increase because of the synergies between the two business. If QVC successfully purchased Paramount, costs would probably stay flat or decrease slightly, depending on how efficiently Diller ran the studio. Paramount's growth rate would probably increase because of Diller's creative talents, but QVC cannot match the synergies that Paramount would have with Viacom.

4. Using a discounted cash flow analysis, we estimate that on a stand-alone basis Paramount should be worth approximately $4.66/share (see attached). However, Paramount should be worth significantly more to Viacom. When calculating an NPV for Redstone's estimated synergies we arrived at an additional $.8/ share in value. This would lead to a value to Viacom of $66.48. We don't believe QVC should pay much more for Paramount than its intrinsic value because there don't appear to be many synergies between the two business. If Diller can improve Paramount's performance he may be able to add some value through sales growth, but not to the extent that Viacom can.

5. We believe Redstone should actively pursue the acquisition of Paramount. He should be willing to pay up to $66.48 for the company. Due to the volatile nature of the industry, we believe the Redstone should pursue a stock deal. The companies in the industry simply can't afford to have too much net debt because one bad season can cause significant swings in cash flow. We believe the lock-out option and termination fees are somewhat onerous and unnecessary. Since QVC is the only company that is demonstrating an interest in pursuing Paramount, Viacom should feel comfortable that they are the preferred "suitor".

FOOD CHOICES

What do the starving people of a third world country like Ethiopia have

in common with the elite society of the West? The need for food. The only difference is

that while Ethiopia still views food as "a means to biological survival (par.1), the

account executives, lawyers and professionals of the western world regard the food they

consume as being indicative of their status in society. Food and its quality and quantity

appear to have a bearing upon every aspect of their lives. This is the theme of the

sarcasm laced humorous essay "Food Worship" by Barbara Ehrenreich published in

17. Catering distinctly to an audience that is well-versed in North American culture,

the author employs figurative language such as tropes and humor, compound - complex

sentence structures and unique juxtaposition of common aspects of everyday life to state

her arguments and make this essay effective. At the same time, however, her assumption

of a specific audience and the larger issue of "the gluttony of a few and the chronic

hunger of the world's many" (par. 10), are not addressed throughout the piece and leaves

the reader much to speculate about.

One of the most effective techniques used by the author to

arouse the reader's interest is sarcasm. In paragraph two she writes, "I am thinking of

substituting food emporiums for museums on my children's Sunday outings." By using

this hyperbolic statement on the importance of food and stating that food has "gained a

foothold in academia"(par.), the author has clearly ridiculed the trends in western

society. She describes each individual as having "hunger of deep and savage

proportions" (par. 5), and expresses shock at how gluttony is no longer considered an

excess, being justified by "wild aerobic fallings and desperate five-mile runs"( par.5).

Innovative and startling metaphors such as "Exercise is the yuppie version

of bulimia" ( par. 5); pita bread and salad bars have "sedimented" down to Burger King

(par. ); and the reference to a possible "gastrointestinal revolution" (par. 6) keep the

reader amused and curious of what the author is trying to highlight. She also establishes

her credentials to comment on this new fad by admitting "to having occasionally dined

on other people's expense accounts" (par. ) while characterizing these "other people" as

"upwardly mobile" (par. ) and "upscale people" (par.4). Here, Ehrenreich forges an

instant bond with the reader as she makes it apparent that she is not a member of this

overindulgent brigade that is apathetic to the rest of the world.

Unusual comparisons have been made by Ehrenreich to support her

contention that the priority given to food has increased over the years. Hard hitting

analogies such as "exercise is to eating in the eighties as contraception was to sex in the

sixties" ( par. 6), the entirely new meaning given to exercise (burning the weight of extra

calories rather than maintaining fitness); and that the food a person thinks is in

vogue can be used as a yardstick for measuring the potential of a possible life partner,

successfully emphasize this point. The comparison of our diet to that of the tiny

shrew in itself describes the obsession that people have for food and how it has come to

be an expression of man's decadence.

The compound-complex sentences present many facts and ideas in a

running manner to support conclusions. A cause and effect argument is sometimes

presented in a reverse sequence with more telling effect; for example, in paragraph four

"Upscale people are fixated with food because they are now able to eat so much of it

without getting fat, and the reason they do not get fat is that they maintain a profligate

level of calorie expenditure"( par. 4). The correlation of profligate expenditure of

calories with exercise comes in the last part of the next sentence where "the run at

dawn", the "midmorning aerobics class" and "racing on a stationary bicycle" are laid out

in a running fashion. Though the style is effective, the sentence structure is complex and

appears difficult to comprehend at first. However, the style makes the conclusion pithy.

Punctuation has been used in many paragraphs to expand a concept or idea, and even

simply for effectfor example the use of hyphens in "and--as food history, food

criticism, etc.gain a foothold in academia"(par. ). Similarly commas and colons have

also been used to skillfully emphasize sections of prose throughout the passage.

There still exist issues in this essay which have not been discussed to their

full potential. The message that Ehrenreich may be trying to convey to her

audience is that more needs to be done to aid the food-deprived areas of the world

as we have the ability to do so. But talking about Ethiopia in the introductory

sentence and mentioning India in the last paragraph does not emphasize this point

enough. She also assumes her readers have grown up with the Western culture; terms

like "jazzercise" or the mention of Jane Fonda's videotapes have no effect on a

reader who has no prior knowledge of these trends and icons. The narration of

incidents, trends and anecdotal bits are effective to the extent of making the reader

aware of the current state of affairs, but this article may suffice to be a humorous

exposition on the eating habits of the 'newly arrived' in Western society.
