Textile and Apparel trade is the most complex phenomena of the new globalization era. There are many factors that contribute to the complexity of global textile and apparel trade. One of the most prominent factors is the issue of free trade, which greatly affects the textile and apparel trade industry. Free Trade refers to trade without restrictions such as tariffs and quotas, which is hurting the industry. This means that many countries have access to our products that did not in the past.

The United States imports a great deal of labor intensive products such as apparel and furniture because of globalization; there is an increased integration of the interdependence between the world's economies. Today textile and apparel production forms one global sector with one global market. Another reason that global trade for textile and apparel is so important is because trade is one of the most accurately measured economic activities for the sector.

United States textile and apparel producers are realizing the importance of participating in global trade and production for survival in the industry. A growing number of U.S. textile and apparel companies are joining their Asian and European competitors in assuming a more global orientation in their operations. Therefore, many industries are seeing potential markets beyond the U.S. borders.

The main issue of concern for the U.S. Textile and Apparel complex is the change in trade laws that are currently going into effect; this will show what the WTO will be expecting for 005. Apparel and textile import quotas supposedly will be eliminated among all WTO-Member Nations; this will change the multi-billion dollar industry.

Write my Essay on Textile and Apparel Trade for me

Some have a positive outlook for the future of the textile and apparel trade and a feeling that foreign operations of the U.S. companies are ready for some significant changes and the push of better trade programs will keep the industry safe in the no quota industry of 005.

Carbohydrates Short-Term Energy Storage

Carbohydrates include biologically important molecules, sugars & starches. These molecules provide short-term energy to cells. Carbohydrates are made up of carbon, hydrogen and oxygen. The carbon provides the "back-bone" of the molecule.

Carbohydrates, like many other organic molecules, may be monomers or polymers. The carbohydrates in the monomer form are known as monosaccharides. Glucose, for example, is a monosaccharide. Disaccharides are sugars that are made of monosacchrides. Sucrose is an example of a disaccharide. Desaccharides are formed by a process called dehydration synthesis ( also known as condensation reaction). In this process, a molecule of water is split out as the bond is formed. The disaccharides are broken down into monomers by a process called hydrolysis. Hydrolysis occurs when a molecule of water is used up as a bond is broken to make smaller products. Polysacchrides are large carbohydrate molecules that are polymers of monosacchrides like glucose. Some important polysacchrides include starch, glycogen & cellulose. Starch is the energy storage molecule in plants and a good source of energy for human cells. Glycogen is the short-term energy storage molecule in human cells. Cellulose is the molecule that makes up plant cell walls. Organisms must break down the polysaccharides to use the glucose.

When we talk about the death penalty there are several things that come to mind. The three most significant are those concerning the penalties cost versus those of life with out possibility of parole, the second being concerns of executing an innocent person, and the final major area of concern is Christianity and how it is against Christian beliefs. This paper will give cover some of the factual details on the death penalty and where it stands today.

The death penalty and life without the possibility of parole have many differences. The average time spent in jail for a person serving a LWOP term is 50 years (life expectancy of average person in jail). While on the other hand the average time spent in jail by a person on death row is 6 years. The most significant of the differences is the cost of each one. LWOP's total cost averages around $.8 million and the average cost of the death penalty is $1.88 million. (These numbers are according to the U.S. Vital Statistics and the LWOP does not include care for older patients in prison or the treatment of such diseases as hepatitis and HIV. Both amounts do include the cost of pre-trial and appeals cost.) According to Time Magazine issue date February 7, 14 says that Texas has the largest amounts of people serving on death row. Texas has set the standard for making murders pay for what they have done by wrongly taking the life of another person. If all states followed guidelines that Texas has set our costs for prisoners might go down. So George Bush wasn't only doing what he thought was morally right in Texas he was helping tax costs go down by being a major supporter of the death penalty. Economically the death penalty is better because not only does it save tax dollars but it also decreases prison population.

Another area of major concern is the possibility of executing an innocent person. Now according to capital punishment statistics from the Bureau of Justice Statistics (BJS) since 17 many laws have been passed so many in fact that over 7% of death penalty involved cases have been thrown out of court for reasons of due process. Another thing concerning the execution of innocent victim's antagonist of the death penalty like to throw in the air is that innocent people have executed since the 100s. However there is no evidence proving this number. Most opponents of the death penalty do not focus on the facts rather they listen to opinion. This does not hold up when presenting any case. The cases they say were innocently executed most of what they are calling evidence is from statements made by the person executed. The concern however slight it is has been even further decreased by the Furman v. Georgia case of 17 Dudley sharps says "The relevant question is Is the risk of executing the innocent, however slight, worth the justifications for the death penalty - those being retribution, rehabilitation, incapacitation, required punishment, deterrence, escalating punishments, religious mandates, cost savings, the moral imperative, just punishment and the saving of innocent lives? " Thousands of innocent people die from being murdered every year. The death penalty sends out a very important message to others considering killing someone it says that it's not alright to kill someone and if you do it you will pay the ultimate price, your life. Hyman Barshay wrote a poem comparing the death penalty to the light house it is as follows "The death penalty is a warning, just like a lighthouse throwing its beams out to sea. We hear about shipwrecks, but we do not hear about the ships the lighthouse guides safely on their way. We do not have proof of the number of ships it saves, but we do not tear the lighthouse down." So the lives we save because of the enforcement of our death penalty because it deters some future killers from killing. The death penalty is very rarely given according to the Bureau of Justice Statistics only about .06% of murder cases are actually given the death penalty. We see that the death penalty is a rare judgment and it is not likely given unless they jury and the judge believe that there is significant evidence to convict the person of murder.

Of the three one concerns discussed in this report the one of most concern involves Christianity and how the death penalty is the same thing as murder. But is it really? There are many Christians who believe that executing a criminal whose crimes were so horrible that they were sentenced to death, still believe the government is a killer as well. Let's look at some actual Bible verses and interpretations from some significant religious leaders. Dr. Charles Ryrie author of Biblical Answers to Contemporary Issues says the "Thou shall not murder" does not include the government and there is in fact nothing in Bible that says if the crime is so harsh that the death is the punishment not says the government may not do so. Another view comes from Professor Michael Pakluk who states "That Christ be put to death as a guilty person, presupposes that death is a fitting punishment for those who are guilty." (The Death Penalty An Opposing View Points Series, 11) Exodus 18 says, Wrongdoers thou shalt not suffer to live." Many religious leaders believe that if it is for the good of society then the execution should be carried through. Even some convicted murders agree with the death penalty. One such criminal was Dennis Gentry who was convicted of killing one of his friends is quoted as saying I'd like to thank the Lord for the past 14 years (on death row) to grow as a man and mature enough to accept what's happening here tonight. To my family, I'm happy. I'm going home to Jesus. As the lethal drugs began to flow, Gentry cried out, Sweet Jesus, here I come. Take me home. I'm going that way to see the Lord. (Michael Gracyk, Associated Press, Houston Chronicle, 4/17/7) So as you can see even some of the convicted murders feel like they would have never met the Lord, if they would have not been sentenced to death row. The Bible also gives another verse giving the government power, If you do what is evil, be afraid; for [the civil government] does not bear the sword for nothing; for it is the minister of God, an avenger who brings wrath upon those who practice evil. Romans 14. (Interpreted by Dr. Ryrie) There are so many ways to prove that this not against Christian beliefs one of the most significant that I came across in my studying of this was when Pope Pius XII said, When it is a question of the execution of a man condemned to death it is then reserved to the public power to deprive the condemned of the benefit of life, in expiation of his fault, when already, by his fault, he has dispossessed himself of the right to live. Many Christians sometimes like to create their own god, that is create a god that they believe that the way they see things is the way their god should see things. But our God shows us through many verses that if the crime is so great and the person is bad for our society then death is the only appropriate punishment.

The death penalty is a very controversial topic in today's time. Many people will agree with it, while others oppose for so many different types of reasons. My backing is for the death penalty 100%. The most significant thing that sticks out in my mind is the cost of life with out possibility parole versus the cost of death row. I don't think murders can be released back out into society I don't think sexual offenders should be released either. The threat is just too great to even risk another victim being hurt. Another thing to remember is that when someone who opposes the death penalty says that innocent people have lost theirs lives because they were sentenced to death, just make sure you ask for their factual proof to show that an innocent person died. With all the factual evidence that there is out there in the death penalties favor, I have to ask myself should we do away with the death penalty? I think not. If a criminal can not be

Nicholas D. Kristof's editorial entitled "Casting a Cold Eye on Arctic Oil" provides a credible personification in itself. Written as a first hand account, the author clearly takes a stand regarding the debate about whether or not to drill in the Arctic Wildlife refuge. His main idea asserts that by excavating the land for drilling we would deprive our children of our national inheritance (Kristof A5). Also, the topic is identified as general and theoretical.

The first stage of his argument, conjecture, is that there is an argument to be considered. "The argument I find most compelling is that this primordial wilderness, a part of our national inheritance that is roughly the same as a thousand years ago, would be irretrievably lost if we drilled," states Kristof (Kristof A5). He acknowledges that both the environmentalists and oil industry have differing opinions on how to use the land in the Arctic wilderness, of which he agrees with the preservation of the land.

Secondly, he defines his argument by expounding on the contrasting arguments of each party. The "coastal plain is a wasteland" and the "impact of the drilling would be a ,000-acre footprint," contend the drilling supporters (Kristof A5). On the contrary, the author periodically inserts his argument that saving the land will allow us to show our kids the original appearance of America (Kristof A5). Kairos is engaged by the oil drillers when they talk about Daniel Esty's proposed deal which would just be exploratory drilling, until something is found. This perfect timing is an attempt to appease the environmentalists so that they might give into the argument.

Next, Kristof employs the seriousness of the issue by explaining what the possible outcomes could be. Proposing that we drill there, if it results that there are limited oil reserves then they would have wasted the wilderness for nothing. In addition, drilling would also include excavation of the land far more to exceed the ,000 acres that drilling supporters anticipated. This gross understatement by the oil supporters spurs Kristof to list all the other consequences of the drilling. "It's also fair to give special weight to the view of the only people who live in the coastal plains," Kristof asserts (Kristof A5). On the other hand, following the environmentalist approach would anger the local Eskimos who strongly favor the drilling in hopes of acquiring wealth and power. "If environmentalists were so anxious about the Arctic, they should come here and clean up the petroleum that naturally seeps to the surface," said angry Eskimo Bert Akootchook (Kristof A5). However, by not drilling it is agreed they could be squandering the opportunity to tap into a source so the dependence on foreign oil is eliminated.

Write my Essay on "Casting a Cold Eye on Arctic Oil" for me

Finally, a procedure is offered in attempt to settle this dispute. Kristof affirms that President Bush's policy to drill in the Arctic refuge is just an endeavor to "lunge for oil" (Kristof A5). As a zealous believer of no drilling in the Arctic refuge, Mr. Kristof decides to let Congress determine the fate of the land.

In conclusion, the author does reach stasis because both parties agree that there is a disagreement on all bases of the argument. A resolution is possible once the decision of Congress is published. I am sure the polar bears won't mind.

Kristof, Nicholas D. "Casting a Cold Eye on Arctic Oil." The New York Times 10 Sep. 00 A5.

National 4-H Council

7100 Connecticut Avenue

Chevy Chase, MD 0815

Dear National Council

As todate, Sombrero Peak 4-H Club has $,800.00 in our club account. Our club does have the funds available to match the, "In-Kind Contributions," requirements. However, our objective is to gain other community clubs support as well obtain local retailers donations. Sombrero Peak 4-H kicks off the new 4-H year with a Christmas wreath fundraiser and our club is anticipating raising over $1,000.00 and a large portion of that will go directly to the Reiny Day Ranch Project.

In October, our club will be assisting a local AKC dog show earning the club another $500.00 and once again a portion of these proceeds will go to this community service project.

As mentioned above, our club does have the funds available, but the objective is to involve community support and the first phrase has just begun.

Thank you for your consideration.

Sincerely,

Elizabeth Lopez

Community Club Leader

Sombrero Peak 4-H Club

Dear 4-H Community Service Supporter

Sombrero Peak 4-H Community Club and the Pima County 4-H Ambassadors is a group of dedicated kids that are committed to helping others in our community.

This year Sombrero Peak and the Ambassadors has named the Reiny Day Ranch Family Foster Care Group Home as their community service project for the 00-004 4-H year.

There are over 00 agencies in Pima County alone that offer services to 'at-risk" youth. Of these agencies, none provide the innovative combinations of animal and horticultural therapies, with mentoring and aftercare services. Reiny Day Ranch Family Foster Care Group Home will be operational November of 00. It will open with six teen male residents and the 4-Hers objective is to service as mentors to the boys as well as assist with the animal therapy program.

Horse therapy will be the first program implemented and then a 4-H swine project will follow. The Sombrero Peak 4-H along with other 4-H Clubs in our community plan on fundraising to purchase and build the animal facilities for the group home. They also hope to have donated new or used items for the home, and of course just basic living necessities like food and clothing.

Sombrero Peak and the Ambassadors are hoping you and the community would like to be a participant in this community service project and perhaps donate funds or anything that could help this group home get off to a great start. Your donation is tax-deductible and all receipts will include the Arizona 4-H Youth Foundation Tax I D number. If you need more

In the story, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, Mark Twain illustrates the importance of Friendship and Family. Mark Twain illustrates these points through the lives of Huckleberry Finn and his accomplice Jim. Throughout the story, Mark Twain shows many examples of how Friendship and Family are important towards Huckleberry Finn and Jim.

Friendship in this novel takes a big role in the personalities of Huckleberry Finn and Jim. For example, Huckleberry Finn says that, "Don't ever let on to know us. And if you hear any digging going on nights, it's us we're going to set you free." This shows that Huckleberry Finn cares for Jim and thinks of Jim as a close friend. Furthermore, true friends will put their lives on the line to protect the ones they care about. In addition, Huckleberry Finn showed concern for Jim's well being, "Git up and hump yourself, Jim! There ain't a minute to lose. They're after us!" This also shows that Huckleberry Finn truly cares for Jim as a friend. Moreover, These feelings in marked contrast with Hucks feelings concerning other people in the early part of the novel where he always is uncomfortable and wishes to leave them. This stated empathy shows that the two outcasts will have a successful and rewarding friendship as they drift down the river as the novel continues.

Another major theme in this novel is Family. For example, "I hadnt had a bite to eat since yesterday, so Jim he got out some corn-dodgers and buttermilk, and pork and cabbage and greens." This shows that Jim was taking in Huckleberry Finn as if he were his older brother, or even a father. Furthermore, Huckleberry Finn needs an older, wiser figure to lead him towards manhood and teach him about life. In addition, Huckleberry Finn showed that he to thought of Jim as a relative when he said, "I was the best friend old Jim ever had in the world, and the only one hes got now; and then I happened to look around and see that paper. It was a close place. I took it up, and held it in my hand. I was a-trembling, because Id got to decide, forever, betwixt two things, and I knowed it. I studied a minute, sort of holding my breath, and then says to myself All right, then, Ill go to hell -- and tore it up." This also shows that Huckleberry Finn cared for Jim so much that he was going to go to hell for Jim. In addition, deciding to go to hell for someone means that that person must mean a whole lot to you, like a father or Brother. In closing, the most precious thing that a man owns is his family, therefore Huckleberry Finn and Jim adventured side by side to prove they were equal and that they respected one another.

Empathy or Sympathy

Paul Laurance Dunbar was an African American whose poetry inspired by the struggles of his people. Although Dunbar had no direct experience of slavery, he believed African Americans continued to be treated as second-class citizens. Their freedom was limited due to their skin color. Dunbar tried to express his feelings of sorrow. He craved freedom and the ability to live like other groups of people. In order to share his sorrow and sadness Dunbar wrote poems. In this poem that entitled "sympathy " he uses imagery of a caged bird to articulate his desire for freedom. He uses the caged bird as a metaphor in all three stanzas. In the first stanza the bird desires freedom, in the second stanza the bird seeks freedom and in the third stanza the bird recognizes that he will never achieve freedom.

In the first stanza Dunbar uses metaphor to show that he desires freedom. He uses fragments such as wind, river, sun, and singing birds to describe freedom to his readers. The Sun represents warmth, life and brightness. People can see things better when it is daylight. The image of the shining sun elicits feelings of warmth and happiness. The power of the sun over the highest point of the land can be seen, when the sun is bright on the upland slopes. Although the sun is not available and upland slopes are not available at all times, with closed eyes one can feel the sun. The same is true of the wind. When Dunbar says, "when the wind stirs soft through the spring grass" it is like he can reach out his hand to touch the spring grass and feel the breeze go through his fingers. In "Sympathy" wind represents movement and happiness of life, especially when it is gentle and slow. Wind also evokes freedom because it goes in every direction. Wind can travel through the spring grass, desert and through the opening crack of a window or door. River has the same meaning to the poet. The wild river flows wherever it wants and makes a wild noise. A stream of glass is another image in this poem that intensifies his hearing. The sound of the river reminds the bird of freedom and wildness. Bringing the opening of first bud together with the first singing bird is not a coincidence. The two events represent spring and he intensifies the good feeling about spring. Dunbar feels all the beauty of nature. He uses metaphor to describe his own feelings to be free. Sun, wind, river and singing birds are ways to express his desire for freedom. He sees and feels freedom in society, all the opportunities that other people have, but he just desires and wishes to have them "I know what the caged bird feels!"

In the second stanza, he explains his desire to achieve his highest potential and break all the chains of discrimination. He is like the caged bird stretching his wings to fly, but is constrained by his small cage. There are visual fragments in this stanza such as blood, old scars and physical pain to represent his emotional pain. Dunbar represents society as a cage that does not allow him to achieve his potential. The swing on the bough and flying back to his perch and clinging are the symbols of freedom. He wishes for the same opportunity as his neighbors, namely other birds. He sees other birds singing and the wind stirring at will. Dunbar describes discrimination as being trapped in a cage. It is not like a wall because he can see freedom of the other people, but he cannot achieve it himself. Society deprives him of opportunities that others enjoy. But he does not lose confidence and struggles for his freedom until symbolic blood flows. These efforts and struggles have existed for ages. "A pain still throbs in the old, old scars and they pulse again with a keener sting". His ancestors have been fighting for years but have yet to gain complete freedom. He feels the pain of old scars, the scars incurred by his parents and grandparents. The injustice and suffering of his ancestor remains as scars. Despite these problems, he as the bird beats his wing and fight to confront the injustice of his situations " I know why the caged bird beats his wing ".

Sex education is a process that begins at birth and continues until the day you die. It is a process of building a strong foundation for sexual health. There are many misunderstandings and non-factual opinions that go along with this topic even though it is constantly discussed. It includes sexual development, reproduction, intimacy, gender roles and relationships. Sexual education should begin at home. Parents and guardians ought to be the primary instructors of sex education for their children. Daily, parents should take advantage of every opportunity to teach this subject to their children. From the beginning of a child's life, they learn how to respond to affection, show love, and how to react in different types of relationships. Children even learn about their sexuality when their parents speak to them, change their clothes, play with them or teach them their body parts. As they progress from children to teenagers or adolescents they continue to learn about their sexualities consistently. However, some parents and guardians are very uncomfortable about talking about or providing information about sex or sexual education. They are either too embarrassed about talking about the extreme topic of sex, afraid of providing to much information to push their children to act on what they have told them or shy of not knowing the answers to the questions that their children might ask. Honest, open communication between parents and children through childhood, pre-teen, adolescent and young adulthood can help young people to mature into sexually healthy adults. Research has shown that parents and children have a range of discomfort levels when it comes to discussing sexuality. School-based sexuality education complements and supplements the sexuality education children receive from their families, religious and community groups. Therefore, due to the necessity of school-based sexuality education it is in my opinion that it be a part of the curriculum for students in the Bahamian High Schools that is junior and senior high. This course needs to be taught in the various high schools for a number of reasons including to students to build a strong foundation, to decrease teenage pregnancy, to make students aware of Sexually Transmitted diseases and prevent them from occurring, to teach about abstinence, which is the better way and to inform the students about sexual orientation and homosexuality.

The primary goal of sex education in the schools should be to help young people to build a foundation as they mature into sexually healthy adults. These programs should assist young people in understanding a positive view of sexuality, provide them with information and skills about taking care of their sexual health and help them make decisions about solving problems now and in the future. According to my interpretation, sex education should provide an opportunity for young people to develop and understand their values, attitudes, and beliefs about sexuality. This course should help young people to develop relationships and interpersonal skills and help them to exercise responsibility regarding sexual relationships including addressing abstinence, pressures to become prematurely involved in sexual intercourse and the use of contraception and other sexual health measures.

Teenage Pregnancy is very rampant in today's society. In a conversation with a senior high school teacher, she related that at least two young ladies from each senior class graduates being pregnant. She went on to say that this did not include the numerous others who end their classes prematurely as a result of their pregnant state and their inability to continue with regular schooling. What do you think is the cause of this? In my opinion the cause of pregnancies among these teenagers is incorrect education about sex from peers or neighbors or no sex education at all. If these students were educated from their entrance into the high school program with a sexual education class, the outcome might have been different. This does not mean that they would not have experimented with sexual intercourse or the opposite sex, it would have meant that they would have been better prepared to deal with the decisions or choices that they made. Sex education needs to be implemented in the high school coursework to make teenagers or pre-teens aware of the consequences of unprotected sex. Each of these teens or preteens will or have gone through puberty, therefore they need to be very well educated as to what can occur if they are sexually active, even for just one time. Sexual education would not stop teenage pregnancies but it indeed reduces them.

Homosexuality is another topic that sexuality education will discuss. Teenagers come into contact with homosexuals on a day to day basis. They are forced to deal with homosexuality in their homes, their neighborhoods, their churches and even in their schools. These students are in their teen or adolescent years where they are learning about who they are and what their feelings mean. In my opinion, homosexuality is a misunderstanding, one that can be easily adopted by teenagers who are easily misunderstood. If they are not taught about both heterosexuality and homosexuality, they can easily fall prey to the homosexuals who are lurking in the society's shadows. Sexual education would encourage heterosexuality- healthy relationships between males and females. It would teach students about sexual preference and that homosexuality is not hereditary. It would also help students to deal with feelings toward the same sex and with homosexuals that they come in contact with.

Help with essay on Sex education in Bahamian High Schools

Some may say that if teenagers are taught about sex and sexuality that their interest in it will intensify thus, resulting in experimentation. Although this might indeed be a true statement that teenagers are very curious, "curious minds will experiment." Sexuality education is not an either or proposition. The reality is that young people need and deserve information about abstinence and contraception. Sex education would teach that sexuality is a natural, normal part of life. Abstinence from sexual intercourse is the most effective method of preventing unintended pregnancies and sexually transmitted diseases, including HIV/AIDS. Abstinence is in fact the better way. Adolescent or pre-teens should be encouraged by not only their parents to delay sexual acts until they are physically, cognitively and emotionally ready for mature sexual relationships and their consequences. The coursework of sex education would offer them a wide range of information exclusively on abstinence until marriage. Interventions that are effective in encouraging teenagers to postpone sexual intercourse helps them to develop interpersonal skills they need to resist premature sexual involvement. For interventions to be most effective, teenagers need to be exposed to these programs before they initiate intercourse, preferably during their high school years.

The sex education curriculum when implemented into the high school system will be designed to promote knowledge about human development and reproduction, to make students aware of the consequences of all types of sexual activity, and to promote young people's respect for and appreciation of themselves, their families and others. This implementation would in fact help to reduce teenage pregnancy, for the reason that important topics such as puberty, sexual health and hygiene, reproductive systems, pregnancy and contraception will be focused on. These topics will discuss abstinence, condom use, diversity, pregnancy options, safer sex and sexual behavior. Students have to be encouraged to accept the shared responsibility of pregnancy prevention by teachers explaining the consequences of premature and unprotected sexual activity, urging responsible decisions about sexual intercourse, and encouraging healthy, respectful and safe male and female relationships.

Breaker Morant is a film set in the 100's during the Boer war where the British were in battle with farmers is Africa. As part of the alliance, the Australians were involved in the war almost automatically because of the British. As the film unfolds, it's revealed that the British Army were involved in a court case with the Australians for disobedience during the war and the killing of the Boer prisoners and the murder of a German missionary who witnessed the murder of the six Boers. This film portrays the fact that it's an anti- Australian film and tends to favour the British. From the onset of this film, it's evident that there is tension between the Australians and the British. Reasons for this being an anti-Australian film is that they were only allowed 1 day to prepare for this case, an inexperienced defence lawyer was given to the Australian men, and the verdict was already made prior to the case, leaving the Australians only to be convicted of the accused charges.

Harry Morant, Peter Handcock and George Whitton were the three Australian men who were tried before the court martial and were all found guilty on all three counts. Morant and Handcock were shot the next day and Whitton was given a life sentence. The trail itself was a "bloody sham" and was a set up to sacrifice the Australian men to keep the name of the British clean. Morant and Handcock were the scapegoats in this case to aid the British to keep its position in the Empire. The sacrifice of these men was the way the British apologised for the war. The men were tried in an atrocious manner. These convictions had to be made and to be executed to keep the Germans from entering the war, as they were seen as a threat by Lord Kitchener and the Bushveldt Carbineers.

The inexperience of the lawyer was enough to ensure that the Australian men were made an example of and the false accusation supported by false witnesses and inaccurate evidence ensured the trio were sentenced to death. Under Lord Kitchener's orders, these convictions had to be made. It's apparent that this is strongly pro-British film as the men were convicted of crimes which everyone involved in the war were guilty of and could all be convicted like these men have. A number of the accusations put forward by the British were that they murdered innocent people and didn't have a right to do so in that manner. As this was a war, there are very few rules that restrict a person from killing people on the opposing side. The transfer of defence witnesses were timely transferred to India replaced by false witnesses that were bought by Kitchener to get the desired results, guilty on all accounts.

The hearing, which was a sham, is not rare in countries such as Australia as it was shown during the Vietnam War.

CAPE WIND ASSOCIATES vs. ALLIANCE TO PROTECT NANTUCKET SOUND

Henry David Thoreau's book CAPE COD describes the natural beauty of the

Cape. Thoreau, if alive today would be enraged because of Cape Wind Associates'

plan to build 10 wind turbines. These turbines would stand 417 feet high on 4

Do my essay on CAPE WIND ASSOCIATES vs. ALLIANCE TO PROTECT NANTUCKET SOUND CHEAP !

square miles of Horseshoe Shoal (see attachment A) in Nantucket Sound. If

approved this wind farm would be the nation's first and the largest in the world.

The average output could provide about 75% of the Cape's usual electric demand

(www.capecodwind.org, visited March, 00). However, the electricity generated

would be sold to the New England power grid for all users and not directly benefit

Cape Cod residents.

The potential developers, Cape Wind Associates, contend that this is "good for

Cape Cod" and will create a new source of economic activity and in doing so make

the Cape a domestic leader in renewable energy avenues (Coleman, Jack. March 8,

00. Cape Cod Times Newspaper ). As for the actual towers themselves, proponents

state that Europe and Great Britain's ocean wind farms have been studied

thoroughly revealing no harmful environmental impacts. Additionally, in Denmark

they are sailing destinations for recreational boaters (see cover page).

The Alliance to Protect Nantucket Sound wants Nantucket Sound to be

designated a natural marine sanctuary, which would stop commercial development

but would maintain recreational/commercial fishing, sailing and other current uses.

This ocean wind farm proposal has become a hot button issue to say the least.

Opponents such as fishermen, homeowners, business people, pilots, and boaters

believe the benefits of an unlimited supply of non-polluting local energy are negated

by the towers visual scar and harmful impact on oceanfront homes. More

importantly tourism, seabed shoals, the plethora of ocean birds and marine life

including the feeding grounds for the endangered Northern Right Whale all may be

adversely affected.

An example of wildlife hazards transpired in Altamont Pass California when

several hundred birds, many of them raptors turned up dead in the surrounding

area of 7000 wind turbines during a two-year study. Most of the birds had collided

with the turbine blades. The power company implemented technical measures such

as painted blades and anti-perching devices, but these have only been somewhat

effective (Raven and Berg. 001. Environment).

On March 7th 00, I spoke with Legislative Liaison Joshua Mant from State

Senator Murray's office (personal communication). He stated that there has been

hundreds of calls and e-mails opposing this potential ocean construction on

Nantucket Sound. This is the hottest issue in the district now and the Senator's

stance is to wait until all the environmental studies are completed. In closing

because Mr. Mant is a Falmouth resident he personally contends that he is against

these 10 wind turbines.

The study that Senator Murray is referring to is U.S. Senator Kennedy's request

for a $500,000.000 grant having the National Academy of Science analyze the impact

of this offshore project. Senator Kennedy (March 00) wrote in his press release

"….there is no existing federal regulatory regime to govern the siting, construction,

maintenance and ongoing oversight of such projects in federal waters." Indeed,

Senator Kennedy is correct; we do not know what environmental impact will be.

The ultimate unknown is the extent to which these turbines will effect

Massachusetts' energy costs.

As for other political leaders, only two, U.S. Congressman William Delahunt and

State Attorney General Thomas Reily have had the courage to publicly oppose this

wind farm. Congressional Aid Mark Forest stated that Congressman Delahunt

submitted a bill in Congress that would designate Nantucket Sound a National

Marine Sanctuary (personal communication March, 00). Another high level

public figure opposing the wind farm is retired CBS newscaster Walter Cronkite.

Mr. Cronkite, who lives on Martha's Vineyard said (Cape Cod Times. Jan. 0, 00)

"Those towers would be obstructive to various aspects of life on Nantucket Sound-

fishing and recreational boating and very particularly to wildlife." Cronikite filmed

a commercial for the Alliance to Protect Nantucket Sound for free. This is airing on

local cable systems.

Sal Nocella, a local fisherman from Mashpee, is upset over the proposed project

and states the wind farm will "look like shit" out on the ocean where he fishes

(personal communication April 4, 00).

Cape Wind Associates contend this is a low impact project and does not harm

any wildlife or the local economy pursuant to tourism. This project will bring new

jobs and reduce Massachusetts dependence on fossil fuels and the accompanied

pollution. However, they do admit visual impacts from the shore will be modest.

Cape Wind states on clear days the wind turbines will look like small masts on the

horizons depending on where you are standing. Mark Rodgers, Cape Wind

spokesman, spells out how the company is currently working on obtaining permits

via U.S. Army Corp. of Engineers, Coast Guard, Federal Aviation Admin., and

Massachusetts Departments of Energy Facilities Siting Board, Executive Office

Environmental Affairs, Coastal Zone Management (Cape Cod Times. Jan. 00).

The first round of the fight was lost when the Alliance was unsuccessful in getting

a judge to block the wind farm data tower. This tower will collect scientific data

from air and sea, thus helping engineers to develop the suitable turbine design.

Additionally, the data will reveal answers to State and Federal regulators before any

more towers are erected and play a crucial role when Senator Kennedy's request is

funded.

Mechanically, the wind turbines operate the opposite of a fan. They use wind to

make electricity. The up winds turn the blades (roughly 4-5 seconds a rotation)

which spin a shaft connecting to a generator that creates electricity (see attachment

B). An assemblage of underwater cables connect it to the mainland power grid.

Globally offshore wind farms are big business and the United Kingdom plans to

build 8 turbines, towering 00 feet near Great Yarmouth, three miles out in the

North Sea. Energy Minister Brian Wilson thinks that by the summer of 00 there

could be 76 megawatts of electricity generated. Ireland has approved plan's for the

world's largest (00 turbines, bigger than Cape Wind's plan) wind farm located on

a sand bank south of Dublin in the Irish Sea. Their Marine Minister, Frank Fahey

predicts this will produce 10% of Ireland's electric needs and eliminate 1 million

tons of greenhouse gases (BBC News. www.bbc.co.uk).

LOCATION is everything pursuant to a wind farm. Consequently,

LOCATION for WIND is superior on Horseshoe Shoal, level 6 (see attachment C).

Cape Wind wants this site, but do the tourists/residents who ferry by Horseshoe

Shoal on way to Nantucket? Cape Cod is about 80% ocean/beach tourism. The

tourism percentage with regards to locations of the wind farms in Ireland and the

U.K. is much lower.

The battle will continue until all data is collected, this could take years.

Million dollar oceanfront homes on the Cape and Islands could have some new

distant masts with nightlights to gaze at! Cape Cod would then be

America's first viable ocean wind farm. Henry David Thoreau's spirit to preserve

the natural beauty of the Cape will end in a courtroom.

I was blind to everything around me. The sensation was new and exciting, and I felt as if I was somehow in another world. I was in a world of blackness, but somehow, my other senses compensated for this loss. It was as if my hearing was an instrument- newly tuned in to my surroundings.

I felt around in the blackness, searching for something or someone. It was a bright, pleasant day. The sun was warm on my back, and I could smell the tall grass around me. The wind blew my hair from my face, and for a brief moment I thought I saw someone, but I knew I must have imagined it. "Hello!!" I cried. "Is anyone there?? Somebody! Anybody!" I started to run in that direction, lumbering through the tall grass. I soon became tired however, and the warm sun combined with a lack of water made me feel lightheaded. I rested until I caught my breath, and then continued on at a slow but steady pace. All of a sudden, I could feel the climate around me change. It was as if I had stepped into an air-conditioned room. The air around me was heavy and damp, and my sweaty skin became cold as it dried. There was no wind- it had been blocked out my what I discovered to be a grove of trees. As I walked I began to hear the sounds of running water. I figured that I must be nearing a river of some kind, and continued in that direction. The ground under my feet was spongy- the foliage was deep and thick. As I felt my way through, I realized my sight was not important here- I wouldn't be able to see anything anyways. My steady pace was soon interrupted however by strange sounds. I heard a low whistle, and tiny whisperings among the trees. I was excited, but also apprehensive. My lack of sight made me feel vulnerable and alone- I no longer wanted to be here. The voices grew louder, as if they were approaching. I felt along until I reached the base of a large tree, and crouched down. As I waited, I felt a strange tickling sensation running up the edge of my leg. It gave me the chills. It's a good thing I can't see what sort of creature was on my leg, I thought, or else I would probably be quite terrified. I heard a twig snap across the way. I froze. What I was sure now to be a person was out of breath. I could hear the hiss of a walkie-talkie, and a boy's voice said "Are you safe?" Still panting, I heard a girl's voice in reply. "Yeah I'm fine. He'll never catch us- are you kidding? Not in here anyway." I slowly snuck out from behind the tree, being careful to make as little noise as possible. Then, quick as a flash, I jumped in her direction, waving my arms wildly until they came in contact with her. She screamed, and then began to laugh. I smiled and pulled the blindfold off. "Caught you."

Case study

STEVEN BELKIN

INFORMATION BACKGROUND

Steven B. Belkin a young self confident man started his business activities already in his earliest years. During his MBA education program he started with other 4 graduating students a consulting company, named Innovative Management. They could find a financial backer who provided them the business sources. The company was going on well, as some other students had to be hired in order to accomplish all consulting activities. A year after Belkin's graduation the company was thought to be sold and Steven decided to leave.

Frank Rodgers, the original investor in Innovative Management wanted Steven to help him with other companies, in which he had invested. One of these companies was the GTA - Group Touring Associates. As Belkin analysed the firm he recognized that GTA had excellent potential and could be built profitably with better management. Indeed he could generate excellent revenue already one year later; therefore he ought to have part ownership. As the Owner of the company did not want to accept this proposition, Belkin began to consider leaving GTA. Looking at the market situation Steven Belkin was aware that it was a good opportunity to start an own business. As the tourism sector seemed to accomplish Belkin's requirements he wanted to operate in this area. Supported by Alan Lewis, GTA's most productive salesman, he started a new travel company the TTG.

Since the charter industry had become a popular travel alternative this seemed to be a prosperous business direction do undertake.

At that time many travellers were willing to accept the fixed schedules of charters to take advantage of the lower prices. The offer of complete tour packages with professional tour guide should be developed to a successful plan.

The strategy to undertake was to imitate the GTA, the implementation steps were already worked out. The only issue was to find some funds to finance the business.

In fact that seems to be the biggest challenge to Steven Belkein, it apparently drives the company into failure.

PROPOSITION STATEMENT

As the market seemed to be prospering in this sector it seemed not to be a bad idea to start a new business. Also the strategy to imitate GTA seemed the reasonable to follow. The desired business plan had however a few missing issues, which were highly important and could influence the business to less lucrative position. The business plan weaknesses could affect either Management or Marketing or financial planning.

Missing issues in those parts should be taken into consideration in order to improve the desired business position and forecasting results.

1.Proposition

To start a new business one should not omit to plan it in time and to delegate work.

Due to the fact that Mr. Belkin's and Mr. Lewis's organization and management depend on their own, they could delegate some work to other employees. Moreover they should take more time to plan and to implement the business.

1.1 Supporting argument in management section

It is absolutely obvious that Mr. Belkin and his partner took too much responsibility on themselves. On the one hand, he wanted to be sure that everything had been done correctly but on the other hand, it was impossible to cope with this amount of work. Naturally Steven Belkin had already some experience with this business but he seemed not to consider the difference between the occurrence of work of established firms, like the GTA - company and his own start up.

1. Empirical evidence

Steven Belkin, according to the case study text, seemed to be very confident. He claimed to have good experience in business and organizing things. The thing which might be considered is that Belkin started dealing without having real funds on which rely. Dealing with business plans, looking for salespeople, looking for financing and accomplish deals at a reasonable price requires more time if you are only in two. However they did neither have more time nor money enough to pay an additional assistant.

. Imputed findings

- Steven was the president and major shareholder, responsible for raising the capital they would need and for the trip arrangements.

- Lewis (executive vice president) would hire and manage the sales force, cover key clients personally, and work with sponsoring groups to fill the tours.

- The sales team started 6 month before the first trip. They had not too much time to deal with everything.

. Assumption

The desired responsibility allocation and management system highly dependent on Mr. Belkin's less on Mr. Lewis's involvement. Their experience and their motivation were the only driven force in this business.

Introducing a new management system could make the working schedule of Steven Belkin less complicated. According to the financial situations it could be necessary to hire one or two assistants to pursue resolutely issues like developing properly the travel plans and give more attention to marketing and sales promotions. Consequently Belkin could be able to concentrate more on the financing aspect than on working out travel plans.

.Proposition

To start a new business one should not omit to plan consider the investment approach

Steven Belkin had to concentrate more on negotiations with potential investors and to work on paper analysis continuously as a background for negotiations with investors.

.1 Supporting argument in financing section

The financing part is one of the negative aspects in Steven Belkins business plan. First he focused all his energy on developing his idea, sales and marketing areas rather than on a real investment approach. Finding no investors means the failure of the desired business.

1. Empirical evidence

The financial strategy was to focus on institutional venture capital groups. Steven Belkin wanted to raise $ 50.000. Only out of 5 venture companies were interested enough to consider the plan. But at the end none of these firms were likely to invest. As a second attempt Belkin wanted to approach a few individual investors. But these wealthy individuals were even more difficult to attract as he thought. Therefore he was addressed to a bank which could offer him loan. The debt line however increased his own exposure because the bank would be landing against his own guarantee.

. Imputed findings

- Belkin tried hard to get investors but during this time the fuel crises started - the prices for fuel were growing rapidly, airlines were cancelling their charter flights and no investor could believe that somebody could start a business at this time.

- Either Belkin or Lewis had to pay office expenses and salaries from his own pockets (credit cards)

- They got reminder letters from their banks, which emphasized they were about to lose their hard earned credit

. Assumption

The thing Belkin missed was a little bit of Luck. As he wanted to set off business the fuel crises started. Maybe on an other moment he would not have had such troubles in finding an investor.

. Supporting argument in financing section

A good business plan should be developed in order to show it to investors

1. Empirical evidence

Steven Belkin did not organize to plan his business properly. In his tables the investors could not find a clearly arranged pattern to follow.

. Assumption

Moreover his calculations seem to be a little bit too optimistic, maybe the investors did not believe his prognostics of cash flow.

.Proposition

To start a new business one should not omit to consider the market situation

.1 Supporting argument in marketing section

Analyzing the development stages of the Belkin's business idea, it seemed to be strange that they did not have any market research. In order to minimize risk of business development it is better to implement this step.

1. Empirical evidence

The business idea was based on the model of GTA group and personal interest from Mr. Belkin. He saw a big opportunity in starting a new travel group. though, he missed to consider the difference between a established enterprise and a start up business. Even if the tourism seemed to be a great marketplace at the moment, apparently he was not aware about the fuel crisis. Obviously none f the investors wanted to take over such a big risk dealing with charting flights.

. Assumption

The absence of market research step in developing a business idea, can lead to wrong assumptions in forecasting figures, especially in accounting part of the business plan.

In order to minimize risks he could have analysed more the actual situation, the target groups, the reservations of the investors, and the competitors.

Atticus Finch and the Truth

To some, truth is merely the absence of lies. However, to Atticus Finch, a main character in To Kill a Mockingbird, it means much more. This is understood because of the many examples of truth that are told in the novel. As the story progresses it becomes obvious that truth is very important to him. To Atticus, truth is confronting the whole story, a precious jewel worth defending, and an often-elusive goal worth pursuing.

Atticus always tells the whole truth and nothing less. Tom Robinson, a black man, is accused of raping a white woman. Scout asks Atticus what rape is. Instead of hastily changing the subject he unflinchingly explains that rape is ¡°carnal knowledge of a female by force and without consent¡± (15). Atticus believes that one must face the demons of society along with its angels. He explains to Jem and Scout what many would assume unfit for young ears. As Jem and Scout grow older they are gradually exposed to more of society¡¯s flaws. Unlike most parents Atticus helps his children come to terms with these societal blemishes rather than shielding them from everything.

Atticus is a very honest person who believes in defending the truth. He is appointed to defend Tom Robinson in court against Mayella Ewell. Many people are upset with Atticus because he ¡°aims to defend him¡± (16). This shows that he does what he knows is right despite of what others think. A majority of the citizens of Maycomb County believe that Tom is guilty simply for he is a black man. Atticus works his hardest to alter that belief. He shows everyone how Tom could not have been the person that beat and raped Mayella. Nonetheless, the jury is steadfast in their biased verdict and pronounces Tom guilty and Atticus loses his battle for truth.

In the story, "In Another Country", by Ernest Hemingway, throughout the story he is constantly comparing life to an iceberg under water saying that life is not always the way you see it. One example of how Hemingway compares life to an iceberg is, "There was a time when none of us believed in the machines, and one day the major said it was all nonsense". The major and his crew never believed in machines to help him and his soldiers but now he is realizing and believing that the machines help people. Another example of how Hemingway compares life to an iceberg is, "He had lived a very long time with death and was a little detached. We were all a little detached, and there was nothing that held us together except that we met every afternoon at the hospital". This shows that the major had gone through life basically knowing that if he had gotten injured there would be probably no chance of surviving because they did not believing machines and the only thing that held him and his crew together was meeting at the hospital everyday. In conclusion Hemingway compares a iceberg which is under the water, and you only can see whats above the water to the way people see life.Medieval German Trade Towns

During Medieval times, trade was an immense part of almost everyones daily lives in Germanic civilizations; Hamburg and Lubeck were the two major trade towns in Medieval Germany and are still major trade towns today. While most countries and costal towns were along the Mediterranean Sea, some of the busiest costal trade towns were in countries along the Baltic Sea. Germany was one of these countries. The two towns were vital to the culture and development of Germany and were also importaint to people who lived there.

Lubeck was a major trade town in Medieval Germany and played an essential role in Germany's culture. Count Adolf II Holstein first founded it in 114. The town was erected on the site of early Slavic settlements. The Duke of Saxony, Henry the Lion, refounded Lubeck c. 1158. In 16, the final privaleges of a free imperial city were secured. Lubeck was head of the Hanseatic League and was the leading Medieval German trade center for the Baltic region (Matthewson, 5DC).

Hamburg was also a big part of trade on the Baltic Sea. The town of Hamburg served as a missionary center for Northern Europe. In 141 and 14 Hamburg signed treaties with Lubeck, which led to the formation of the Hanseatic League. However, in 1, the town split from the league and became independant. Even now, Hamburg is one of Europe's major ports. Some of their exports include chemicals, food products, industrial equipment. Hamburg has an extensive harbor and dock installations (Hamilton, 54DC).
